Fans displeased with idol group’s debut single

On April 16, idol group, Rev. from DVL, released their first major single through entertainment giant Yoshimoto Kogyo, thanks largely to the break-out success of member Kanna Hashimoto.

However, what was intended to be a celebration of the Fukuoka-based unit’s new-found fame ended up generating sad and bitter complaints from idol fans. At the center of the controversy was the inclusion of tickets to a “high-five party” bundled in with their single "LOVE-arigatou-."

As their name suggests these events allowed Rev. from DVL fans to slap palms with the idols during one of four events in Tokyo (April 16, 17, 20) and Osaka (April 19). Purchasers of the new single received a ticket to the event entitling them to attend the party and receive a guaranteed personal high-five or handshake with a member of Rev. from DVL.

However, the rub is that you get a high-five or handshake with a member of the 13-girl idol group. Printed on the ticket is the name of the member (and only that member) you can get the interaction with.

With other idol groups that might not be so bad, but in Rev. from DVL’s case, it’s like attending a meet and greet with the original Jackson Five but only getting access to Tito.

In the same way, a vast majority of LOVE-arigatou- buyers were surely hoping to see Kanna Hashimoto’s name on their golden tickets, and those who didn’t let everyone know online.

“I bought the CD hoping to get a high-five ticket with Hashimoto… but it was random.”

“If you bought one of these lottery tickets and didn’t get Hashimoto, I think you’d be angry.”

“Even at an AKB48 live show, you can get high-fives from everyone after the performance.”

“How many freakin’ CDs do I have to buy to get a ticket with Hashimoto?!”

Several of the more avid idol otakus determined to high-five the young woman dubbed the “beyond angelic idol” and “once in a millennium idol” in the media were left feeling gouged by the random name ticket campaign. That being said it would appear the irritation was directed more at Yoshimoto than the group itself.

So while the release of Rev. from DVL’s first major single was somewhat sullied by unsatisfied supporters, the fact that people care so much says something about the group’s current popularity.

...and there, in a nutshell, is just about everything wrong with modern Japanese society in general and modern Japanese men in particular.

If you were an idol wouldn't that scare you? These are just young girls, how is it not scary to think someone will buy the CD repeatedly just to get a chance to high five you, then get mad at you because of things that are 100% out of your control? It's not like the girls were the ones to pack the tickets in the CDs.

I'm sorry, did this author just compare "Rev. from DVL" to the Jackson 5? It's not even like attending a meet and greet with Maroon 5, much less the Jackson 5.

How pathetic are the grown men that go to these events just to high-five a girl barely entering puberty...?!

It's just that... the music is so terrible... all those voices barely in key unharmonized ... just talk singing out the lyrics... I understand the purpose of these groups, and I respect I come from a different culture... Just ... agh....

are you people serious? its not just Japanese society that handles celebrities in such a way. Look at how America handles their fix for celebrities(Justin Bieber comes to mind). Wanting to meet your favorite artist/idol is a big deal to some people. Probably only reason why some of the people bought this one CD. But when you get told that you will be able to do do something if you do this(buying the CD), and then they add the "certain restrictions apply" randomly without prior notice, imo, that's messed up.

Rev. from DVL

Wow. That must be the worst name I've heard for one of these groups in a long time... What does it even mean??

I don't know why people seem to think that people buy this music because of it's aural qualities. It's karaoke-level catchy music sung by young girls.

“How many freakin’ CDs do I have to buy to get a ticket with Hashimoto?!”

This guy just doesn't realize, does he? He's one of the reasons why this stuff sells so well. Great idea by the company to sell CDs.

They have fans already? And they're just making their debut album. Yes, this IS all wrong.

The title makes it seem like the fans actually bothered to listen to the song and didn't like it.

They're fighting over............. a 15-yr-old girl......................

(If you're a teenager, guess that's OK. But for grown-ups..............)

They all look much the same to me so why these people are getting uppity is unclear.

Ah lucky fellows who get to drop their pants and confess to their favorite ido--wait, wrong story. ;)

What, "Rev. from DVL" -- that's their name (face palm)? Anyway, if I was a member of this group, I would be scared to death of encountering a 'semen high-5' from the otaku fans, especially if I was the one star (whatever her name is) that everybody was hoping to draw, so this random assigning of names is a good thing -- it lessens my chances of going home with a tainted stinky palm.

The headline makes no sense at all. In order to have fans you have to have released at least one previous single in order for them to become your fans. A debut means its your first single. This kind of inbred marketing strategy should not be promoted by equally implausible headlines.

I´d suggest that all these Otakus who freak out about the chance to shake hands with a 13 year old middle school girl grow and get a life. Sheesh.

This is the funniest thing I've read all week. Oh well, it's just Tuesday, but still. Good god, so one member apparently was in a popular tv skit or something and now all of a sudden everyone wants to touch her hands! If her fans, which are largely, at least on the paper, adults, haven't realized the idea with these CD lotteries is to get them to buy a ton of CDs yet, I'm seriously concerned for the future of our dear new homeland. I'm sure the AKB management is beating themselves over not coming up with this idea first.

Agree with tamarie. The problem foreigners have with these Japanese idol groups is the fact that the main fan base are (older) males...some in their 40's and 50's....and it's basically socially acceptable here.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

You can pay to touch them.... sorry, that's over the line, I think.

this is not news. It is in fact so irrelevant to anybody on the planet (or should be) and has no redeeming cultural significance whatsoever. Make it stop. Please.

I thought , when i read the headline that some otaku idol fans started to elevate their standards and complain about the single (i.e the music)... turns out that they were complaining not about the music but not having the chance to meet the idol they want...

what a disappointment!

This girls isnt 13, she is 15 now ( February 3rd, 1999) . And for getting the life, I believe we all know the real side of girls , and women so, this idol groups gives us fairytale image of girls, and for idol fans, that's all what they want , but if you check the age of those fans, you would see that majority of them are under 30, and thats standard, and lot of will probably get married after 30, so, its just following the dream before deciding they are ready to find real one , but lets see western world, where young men under 30 are wanting to have as much fun in their life , and that include sex with as much diferent partners , and attenting parties also as much possible, but because of that its not a rare case of young fammilies of 16 year teens , compare that with Japan ,who dont have such a problems . They actually have opposite. And also, compare that in west , majority of people always looking for younger girls to date or marry , witch result people of 50-70 and over that age men being with 18-25 girls, and while in Japan its rare to find so big age gap, specially in entertainment world, where majority of stars are married with similar age group .

The article doesn't say how many of the singles were sold that included the tickets. Can you imagine a single person having to high-five EVERY FREAKING TICKET HOLDER?! Their wrists would be broken by the time it was over. At least with the way they worked it, each member only has to deal with 1/13th of the otaku mass.

Only with Japan do people take some minor, irrelevant pop culture issue and try to extend it to a Grand Statement on Japan. It's an idol group. it's meaningless. There's no greater view to be had on Japanese culture from this.

I hope that they can listen to some Motown and Gospel music, someday. :)

I spent all this money and I can't "slap hands" with a specific teenaged idol member. Losers

Sick stuff, all men over 25 should be KEPT OUT unless they are their with their KIDS

I got a high-five from Tito once and haven't washed that hand since.

There's something deeply disturbing about grown men who buy CDs in an attempt to high-five a girl who only recently turned 15. What is wrong with them?

I dont know why people are so ignorant, in this group "Rev. from DVL" , there are another 11 members, with same or even younger age, but they DONT WANT to handshake with other girls, they want only ONE, and thats Kanna Hashimoto , so , the age is not the key here, the key is that fans think she is future big star , the person that would be talked for years to come , and they want to be a part of her raise to star . And because of those fans, she will get more and more roles in dramas and in CM .
