This kind of thing is certainly happening in Japan as well, especially on the Korean idol scene. I used to be very into a K-pop group that would come to Japan all the time to promote. They held tons of events and concerts and the majority of the fans were women aged 40-65, definitely twice the age of the idols. Some of them seemed to have the same "he's like a son" thought process but a few may have had other ideas. It's pretty harmless and lucky for the guys because they don't have to worry as much about delusional pre-teens and they get tons of expensive stuff for free as gifts, but it does get a bit strange when the fans would get angry about little things like when one of the guys was having an off day and wasn't as bubbly as the day before or he forgot her name or something.

Let's swap the genders, having the young teen TF Girls with a quarter of their fan base being 30+ year old men........I thought so.
