Hollywood has began fat and lazy, as have movie goers. They remake older titles and keep making part 3 and part 4, just to make money. And customers kept going to see this junk. Finally, people have had enough. Lets hope we get to see some original and interesting movies going forward.

I don't mind sequels/prequels/remakes etc, if they're done well. Hollywood has being doing it since the beginning. Look at the James Whale Frankenstein films, and the follow ups. Although, to be fair, Boris Karloff bailed out after Son of Frankenstein.

And, the 2 main actors (TLJ and Will smith) are not in the movie!
The title Men in Black is possibly sexist now as a main character is female.
Not really what 'movie goers' want. The Bourne movie without Matt Damon was not exactly a hit, either.

Tbf, Matt - Linda Fiorentino's character becomes one of the "Men in Black" at the end of the first movie.
I must say, it was a lot better than expected and fitted in well with the overall Bourne universe. A shame the next installment didn't have Jeremy Renner on board.

Men in Black is Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones anything else is a flop.
Not at all, the term Men in Black is from the fifties and sixties which describes the shadowy world of spies (and alien hunters), rewriting a great series to appease the political correct crowd by having a female lead doesn't change the fact of what the origins of term "Men in Black".

Easy cashgrab, that's whats it all about. Sadly, Hollywood knows that in the end people will still watch these movies and bring in cash. Quantity over quality. Every single movie is getting a reboot, a sequel or a prequel. Now they are also planning a sequel to Gladiator. sigh.
But yeah, while we hate reboots etc, there have been many that have done well: "Batman, James Bond" etc. So its a hate love affair.

Maybe "Shaft" would have been better with Tommy Lee Jones in the lead role and Will Smith as his son...

Been reading the same Hollywood-is-doomed article every other year for over a decade. Quite a few sequel-fatigue pieces thrown in there too. No surprise given that that's where most of the production money has gone for, like, forever, and also where most of the box office haul comes from.
Shaft sounds like something that could have been remade really well 20 years ago, with Tarantino at the helm, back when he still made cool films. MIB I've never seen any of them but I can't stand Tessa Thompson. Maybe that's just b/c watching her character on Westworld is the equivalent of sticking a fork in your eye. That sums up that entire show but she was exceptionally annoying.

The original Shaft from the '70s was a franchise. It's a bit of a stretch to call the current incarnation, which is barely a sequel to a film that came out 19 years prior, a franchise. I think it's less 'franchise fatigue' and more 'nobody cares' as to why the new film failed.

The big question is would masses of people go and see it
Because people have not been - otherwise, more of it would be made already
People are lackadaisical - if they don't know much about something, they tend not to get interested from moving their ass from the couch and go all the way to the theater

The first Men in Black was shown when I was in junior high, it is still one of my favorite movies. Watched this new release without reading any reviews...and I found myself yawning before the movie reached halfway.
