I heard that Yu Kashii actually had a blood transfusion in order to play her role.

Well, nothing says amicable relations and the power to see your marriage through thick and thin like knowing the other's blood type.

Interesting... I will have to see if I can watch this show. It will definitely provide some interesting information on how Japanese women think.

What is this insane Japanese obsession with blood types? I remember when I first arrived here and was asked by some Japanese friends what my blood type was, and I told them I didnt know. They nearly dropped dead with shock! Who the heck cares what a person`s blood type is? The only thing that needs concern us is that some dpoey doctor or nurse doesnt give us the wrong blood type if we ever need a transfusion.

It is a wonderful thing to attribute your personality and character to something which you have no control over. So liberating!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

You are all sour grapes because you are some common blood type and not AB neg (tip -tell Jbirds you are AB neg and reap the rewards)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Ask any local and they will tell you it's related to character, though it's psuedoscience with roots in Nihonjinron. After all, a Japanese A is somehow different to a foreign A, apparently.

When asked, I also said I don't know my type, which led to gasps of horror. But what happens if you need blood, they said. My reply was that a doctor would administer blood to me, and it is something that I would never do myself so I really have no practical need to know. But how would they know your type? Easy, just check and even if I guessed, the doctor would have to check to confirm anyway, to avoid killing me.

ha? is this for real?

Wakarimasen -

My mum was AB- and her second child (me) nearly died at birth because of the blood incompatibility. All the time they were giving the new-born me emergency blood transfusions they were consoling my mum by telling her she was young and could have more babies, never mind this one.

And when it comes to a medical emergency and needing blood, the commoner the blood type you are, the better.

Not a transfusion. An infusion.

And not blood.

My J colleagues guessed I'm blood type O. But I'm blood type B. Am I not portaying them the B type of personality or is it that the whole blood type issue doesn't apply to me because I'm a gaijin?.....:)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

BTW When you get a blood transfusion, simple A, B, AB, or O isn't nearly enough information to know if your body will reject it. So you will always be tested first.

I don't believe in your personality determined by blood type, but then a lot of A type friends exhibit the characteristics. Probably co-incidence.

Whenever I am asked my blood type here in Japan (I already know that question is to try and work out my personality by shortcut), I always answer 'red'.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Basing personality on blood type is even more ridiculous than basing it on star signs.

I'm A+, which I found out at the blood donor centre. Unfortunately, Japan refuses to accept my blood in case I have the human form of BSE. It's their loss.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Hey Scrote. This can't be just a coincidence. I'm A+ just like you and I also have human BSE. This is amazing.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

While historically I have been type O, since I too am now blocked from donation – since I spent 24 hours in the UK some years back – does that mean that I am now type A?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

TJ - no. You are definitely a type O. Type O's only have the 24 hour human BSE whilst A+'s have the fully-blown human BSE.

Now your're type N-O.

blood types have nothing to do with marriage ,thus fuji television should stop airing such a program that will worsen an already confused jp population who are thorn between individuality and society

I am under the impression that you are probably not married ? Try visiting my place on a Friday night after we have both been drinking and a big fight breaks out.

Japanese science is at it again! This sort of takes "mislabeling" to a whole new level doesn't it?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

On the whole, the Japanese are quite superstitious. You only have to see the queues of people waiting to buy lottery tickets in 'lucky' Yurakucho, to realise this.

Add to that the herd mentality that exists here, and you really can trick them into believing anything.

From my understanding the origins of blood-type-determining-character theories are in eugenics and Nazi medicine; the different blood type profiles of Jewish and other ethnic groups were supposed to be 'proof' of their inferiority to the 'Aryan' race.

If my memory serves me correctly the theory became popular in Japan after someone (with no medical or research background) published a book here in the 60s or 70s describing all the 'traits' associated with each blood type and their compatibility. Pure twaddle of course, as ridiculous as phrenology (the shape of one's head determining character) a similar theory that thankfully is left behind in Victorian times.

Japan's attitude to science really amazes me. I've seen very accurate science programmes on TV, a lot of which are aimed at kids - which is laudable. However, the ignorant 'voodoo science' that is encapsulated by the local obsession with blood types is a shame to Japan

Is there any scientific data to back up any claims?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

None.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

if there's no data how can you be sure there's no connection ? dogma is dogma, positive or negative i guess

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I'm so fat, my blood type is Cocoichiban! Ba ding yeah!

I heard the same thing and you beat me to the post.

"type A, B, O and AB"

What about type T-negative?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

That does it, I'm gonna go have my bone marrow irradiated, get some stem cells from a donor of a different blood type and really throw a monkey wrench into the blood type = personality hypothesis.

Just a another immature part of this culture. There is NO scientific/medical evidence at all.Japanese just like to catogerize people and it's a simple way of doing it.Perhaps it's a conversational thing so some people actually have something to talk about ?

stone fish has it right "It is a wonderful thing to attribute your personality and character to something which you have no control over. So liberating!".... avoiding personal responsibilty is a full-time occupation for the Japanese, and yes it derives from Nazi eugenics, dropped everywhere else in the world, but a cornerstone of nihonjinron.

Hey, some people base romance on the zodiac. Others on Tarot. Then there are those fortunes outside the temples. Or maybe the latest singles website. You can pick your lunacy. The outcome is likely the same.

What a load of old cobblers. Who's going to beleieve that? It's like the forune tellers wiv the crystal ball at the pier at the seaside, load of old tosh. No normal person would believe that surely.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

AlfGarnett,

Haven't you seen the fortune tellers on the streets in Japan? Palm reading is another one, and bet most believe in that too. Why not my left hand then, or my foot!!...is normally my reply to 'observations' about my palm.

northlondon-if you could please refer me to any publication that links blood type to behaviours not the nazi stuff,i will appreciate it.and if u and your wife fight every friday after drinking then i pity you.it is your lack of composure as a man.for your information,i am married to my lovely yuka and i have a handsome boy.maybe ,when you 2 have kids you will not go drinking to come home afterwards to fight.dont attribute your avoidable fights to blood types

You don't want to be rhesus negative in Japan - apparently it's very rare and so supplies of Rh- blood are extremely limited. If you're Rh- and not in the "probably infected with BSE" category (NZ don't want my O+ blood either), then do go and give blood - it might be you who needs it one day.

I keep mine in the closet. Good thing bananas are cheap.
