Fukada hopes air traffic controllers will watch her new drama

Japanese dramas are very realistic. I am sure this story will be amazing and realistic. I am sure the will be a love interest (tall handsome guy) , a rival, a gentle older boss who gives guidance, a strict boss. Perhaps she will start out with glasses (to hide her looks) but in the end everybody will find she is beautiful. Oh yes, somewhere in the movie, I am sure one of her relatives (most likely a close aunt) will be in the hospital with cancer. It will be a happy rending and there will be lots of crying. Japanese movie is very realistic.

Are they going to be speaking English?

According to Wikipedia "....Although local languages are sometimes used in ATC communications, the default language of aviation worldwide is English. Controllers who do not speak English as a first language are generally expected to show a certain minimum level of competency with the language."

So the comment on the technical English terms isn't unusual as air controllers inherently requires English skills.

As for hot women at work, I'll doubt that one

I heard air traffic controllers are all attractive and looking for love. I want to find out more about these cool, romantic people who safely guide my airplane's trajectory.

I hope real life air traffic controllers don't face that much murder in their everyday lives.

Drama... more than likely the real controllers will cring and hate the show.

Any drama to shows the reality of any profession will either be too boring for prime time, or too embarrasing to the profession they are trying to portray.

Nah, that's Rakuten and Uniqlo. You need English for clothing retailing, not for air traffic control.

I have a friend who's an air traffic controller, he's 5 foot 5, bold and a bit over wieght. But he's a real nice guy, potential ladies will be upset since he's married with 2 kids.

Cripes, we don't even know if she will speak any English in this drama, maybe she will. But if she doesn't, well, this reminds me of a scene in Black Rain:

NY Detective Cochrane ( played by Michael Douglas ) to yakuza member ( played by Guts Ishimatsu ): "You do remember me, don't you?"

Guts: "Eigo wakaranai - nihongo hanase yo!"

I hope they'll be busy watching their screens for air traffic, not what is likely to be the latest tripe we have to shell out for. Seriously, I cannot think of a duller occupation to base a drama on -- maybe they'll show 'Pushing Tin' on TV this month as well.

I'm all for some escapism... I like Japanese dramas. Okay so they are a little unrealistic at times, but so what. If you want reality watch a documentary.

Yes by international agreement English is the language of Air Traffic Control.

gogogo, you are more correct than you realize. None of us in the profession have ever seen any thing on film that come close to portraying our work, I would say for two reasons, that 99.99% routine I mentioned above and the fact that for security reasons the Federal Aviation Administration does not allow filming of actual work in a control facility and if Hollywood is interviewing controllers they are ignoring what we describe in favor of drama.

But I'll make no opinion about the show as I haven't seen anything of it. It's a new entertainment show and it is up to the people to judge it.

Hollywood took so many "artistic liberties" that it isn't even funny to those of us who have worked in the RADAR Approach controls.

I went for an air traffic controller job interview once and I was way out of my depth. The airline industry is lucky I didnt get in. Its a very intense, high pressure job (which by the way does not sound dull to me at all).

This Fukada person sounds a bit superficial. It would be nice if by cool (saying she found her character cool) she meant calm under pressure, but I somehow doubt it. It seems as long as she thinks real air traffic controllers are cool people and that they`re cool with her attempt at representing them, then all will be cool.

I kind of agree with smithinjapan that the air controllers will be more concerned about whats on their work screens, not their tv screens, but I dont think he should go calling any profession dull. I thought Pushing Tin was good as far as I can remember and sorry Frank Vaughn but if Hollywood took liberties with the profession, then thats Hollywood and you cant expect anything else.

I actually watched this program last night. Fukada's English (and everyone else's in the control tower) was so bad that I was surprised no planes crashed at Haneda. I don't know how they can sustain a whole series of 12 episodes with controllers just saying things like "ANA 135 cleared for takeoff," or "JAL 123 turn right," etc.

But having said that, Fukada is gorgeous, dressed up for her role. She seems to get more beautiful each year. And co-star Asaka Seto is a hottie, too.

I agree with Brainiac. I dont know how more planes dont crash in that show. Still Ive only watched 3 episodes (since my last comment I found it online and decided to check it out) so theres time yet. Its not actually bad, its funny in some scenes - couldnt be further from Pushing Tin though as they all look so glamorous. Im glad though that they have subtitles for their ATC-lingo because as a native English speaker I find their pronounciation all wrong, and unclear, and so its very hard to understand what theyre saying. Sorry!! They really should have worked harder on that aspect of it. Then again the pilots coming in in their jumbo jets would be familiar with that lingo and would probably know what they mean (you would hope!!)

Sorry Miss Fukada, if you dont speak English u cant play ATC. And if the drama is in Japanese only then it is nothing more than a fiction...

Why doesn't the poster show the frumpy character with glasses and stern looking oba-san? Surely the scriptwriters didn't overlook these fundamentals?

God ! I wouldn't like this sad shower in charge of getting my plane down safely... most of them look just out of college.
