Only $8 million from the King of YouTube?

It's a one-hit wonder. Hope he doesn't use all his earnings too quickly!

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

was awarded one of South Korea’s highest cultural honors, the Okgwan Order of Cultural Merit

Any previous winners turn in their awards?

Those 1,2 billion views can't possibly the unique. I know there are bots on youtube that can be employed to garner hits.

It's very "catchy" music and I loved the Parody : "Mitt Romney style"...

Why would you guys take pride in not seeing something and therefore not being able to judge it for yourself? If you don't want to watch it, fine, but being 'proud' that you refuse to see something objectively isn't much of an accomplishment. I avoided it for a long time myself (never talked about being proud either way), then finally watched it and thought it was pretty amusing. Agree it's likely a one-hit wonder, but take a gander and THEN judge it.

There are a number of hotties in the video, but she is the only one you really get a good look at -- and yeah, smoking. She's a lot better looking in other video and ads, though, in my opinion (her first appearance in the video her clothes and makeup are a bit gaudy, although her later appearance is a lot cuter).

want a better article: google shares revenue-- how much?

8 mill, --for youtube, it implies... but state it clearly. How much did psy get? How much did youtube get?

ppl who didn't see it-- I don't get it, I've resisted things that were too popular, hyped before, but never waved a flag about it. If something was popular and I did see it & hated it, Then I might say "that'S so lame". This vid is fairly amusing, as is the dance move. But it's only this popular because it is quirky, and we're still in the early stage of the internet when lots of ppl in the world have just gotten their first computer and in the novelty phase of seeing and forwarding. This will change slightly in another dacade or two, I predict.

"Ad revenue from popular YouTube videos is shared with creators of the content." To my own YouTube content provider experience this reflects approximately into $1.23 Million in revenues for the uploaded.

Apparently, it was a 50/50 split. However, the $4m earned also includes his record company, so you can imagine he'd be lucky to get 1/10th that!

The real cash has been made through appearances and merchandising. I heard in Sydney, tickets to see him were $130 (about 11,000 yen) a pop!

Psy has actually been a budding pop star in Korea for nearly 15 years. This song is not his. It belongs to his producers. Of course he is making money from it. There are much better parodies on YouTube if ya wanna see them. It is just pop rubbish and will fade away soon, hopefully.

The performance slices i've seen on talk shows reflect a very vulgar pedestrian style . . .but if that is what the public likes, who's to day ! ?

Gangnam Style = Korean Macarena

I also take pride in never having seen it.

How many of those 1.23 hits are from S. Korea?

Gees, are there actually people who would shell out $130 to see Psy the one trick pony!? I guess there are too much discretionary dollars around...

Lowly: "ppl who didn't see it-- I don't get it, I've resisted things that were too popular, hyped before, but never waved a flag about it."

Exactly. It kind of reminds me of the people who refused to watch LOST simply because of all the buzz and popularity (and I'm NOT comparing the content of LOST by any means, only people's reactions to the popularity of a program, video, or what have you). I had friends who were simply uninterested in watching the show, and TV in general for that matter, despite some people pressing them. On the other hand I had other friends and acquaintances who BOASTED about not watching it, saying it was like this and that despite never having watched it to validate their opinions on the show. It's rather sad when someone refuses to see or do something ONLY because others do it. It's the same for everything, not just PSY. Some people rant and hate on AKB without every having bothered to watch any of their material (to not hear it if you live hear is pretty tough). I hate them, and they have no talent, can't dance well, can't play instruments, don't write most of their stuff if any, they engage in kiddie porn, etc. But I base that on having seen and heard them.

Shaumi: "How many of those 1.23 hits are from S. Korea?"

Some, for sure, but a whole lot, likely the majority, are not -- just look at all the tribute videos from American marching bands, individuals in the US and elsewhere, and it's pretty clear it's not just 'South Korean hackers' upping the ratings.

Disillusioned: "There are much better parodies on YouTube if ya wanna see them. It is just pop rubbish and will fade away soon, hopefully."

Agree on the pop rubbish bit, but it's pretty clear how long it's been around and that it's STILL going strong that it hasn't faded quickly like many one-hit wonders. And yes, some of the parodies are pretty genius.

American pop has revolutionised South Korea. North is next.

I don't understand the 'taking pride in never seeing it' comments. Personally I think the song is a work of genius. It is a parody making fun of a trendy Seoul neighborhood. It is well written and well produced, and made money, all done by a complete underdog without the help of a major label (sung in Korean none the less). It should be considered a slap in the face of the "Major" labels and should be used in as a case study to all music majors in any music college (like I teach at), showing how one can use the internet as a marketing tool without spending any money. Why anyone would think that it is something not worthy of praise is beyond me.
