Godzilla to get Hollywood makeover in possible 3-D version

Godzilla will be stomping back into cinemas in 2012, this time possibly in 3-D. Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros Pictures said this week they will co-produce a new Godzilla film which will "pay respects to the original 1954 picture rather than follow up on Sony's 1998 Godzilla," according to Daily Variety.

The 1998 film received criticism from some fans that Godzilla looked too much like a giant lizard and was eventually awarded the dishonor of the "Golden Raspberry" award for worst remake.

Legendary Pictures plans to announce the director for the film soon, and there are rumors that it will be filmed in 3-D to compete with big hits such as "Avatar" and "Alice in Wonderland."

Legendary Pictures founder and president Thomas Tull commented, "We plan to make a Godzilla movie that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed the character to remain as pop-culturally relevant for as long as it has."

Enough with the 3-D stuff already. It's just an excuse for Hollywood to allow increasingly cheaper CG to carry the slack of lame screenplays. Besides, 3-D has not made any appreciable technological jumps since the 3-D of the 80s and 90s. It's the same stuff, but for CG, and it's just not worth wearing the uncomfortable glasses and paying the extra ticket price (at least in Japan).

Regular ol' 2-D is just fine (at least until they figure out a way to make the whole darn theater shake along with the explosions onscreen). :D

Godzilla ! tired now. Tarzan in 3D would be excellent choice for me

CG just screws everything up.

This couldn't be more true. Though I was impressed with "Cloverfield", it looked real.

I'm trying to think of which American director could do the greatest injustice to "Godzilla" but I can't put a finger on a name. It would have to be a director who is most likely to put all of the focus on the special effects and 3-D and will have his nephew in film school bang out the script in a week for $3,000.

Michael Bay? It can't be James Cameron as he is Canadian.

The first Tsuburaya Godzilla was a great movie, but the rest of its successors have been load of craps, Hollywood or Tokyo. End it. Period.

"we as fans would want to see"? :) OK, Godzilla Battle Royale! GOzilla vs. a bunch of other monster... yah! I want to see that! and the first one Godzilla destroys in the one from the American remake!

The problem with the 1998 Hollywood treatment was that it wasn't Godzilla. It was a random giant monster tearing up a city. If you keep it in that context, it wasn't a bad monster film. But to call it a "Godzilla" movie? Hardly. I bet Toho Studios laughed all the way to the bank with the licencing money they received for that sham of a film, particularly after seeing the disaster that it was.

"We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed the character to remain as pop-culturally relevant for as long as it has."

You mean like have a monster that actually looks like Godzilla, rather than a steroid-pumped iguana? Hopefully, Legendary Pictures president Thomas Tull will honestly listen to fans. First tip: We don't want a "re-imagining" of the Godzilla character. If you can't stay true to the original, don't bother.

the director should take serious examination of the Gamera trilogy to see how it should be and can be done well........

3D - a whole new dimension in crap!

I'm waiting for Godzilla vs. Superman in 3D...

I can't wait to see the 3D of all the shiny jumpsuits and dodgy specs that the scientists wear.

Hey telecasterplayer - Why don't we have Steve Martin play the part of Godzilla. They could film it in Iraq this time (oh wait Iraq already looks like Godzilla has been there) - how about Canada, they never get to be in any SciFi movies.

Bottom line - Leave Godzilla to the Japanese film industry where it belongs, this is just one thing that America can't get right in Hollywood.

And which city will Godzilla/Gojira terrorize?

Really? They didn't learn from the first time?

Ugh. Please don't trust today's awful Hollywood directors.

Hey, just for fun, instead of having Raymond Burr Americanize it by playing a reporter named "Steve Martin", maybe Steve Martin could play a character named "Raymond Burr"?

The original movie was made in Japan, had a very strong subtext against the American atomic bombs, and did NOT have Raymond Burr. He was called in to make the movie palatable to the Americans (and West in general, perhaps). The sanitized movie is a hoot, it is true, but it is not the original, which totally rocked.

Excellent! I love Gojira movies!!!

That 1998 Godzilla was garbage. Total garbage. I really think that Godzilla is a brand that Japan should guard more carefully.

"We, in Hollywood, we have no new ideas." True, but the last Godzilla film was in 2004 and the special effects technology is far advanced since then.

"We, in Hollywood, we have no new ideas."

Japan's movieland comes out with Number XXX in a series of the same movie (Tora-san - 48 movies, Tsuri-Baka Nikki - 20 movies) until all the original cast members are dead.

Personally, the main drawing card for me for the 'original' 28 Godzilla movies was, as OssanAmerica alluded, the fake-ness about the whole thing: obvious toy tanks, miniture buildings being stomped on by a man in a fake suit. CG just screws everything up.

That lizard in the 1998 "Godzilla" movie wasn't Godzilla. Still, Ferris Bueller, er, Matthew Broderick and Jean Leno were entertaining.

I hope it has toy tanks and fighter planes. That was the best part about the original. And Raymond Burr.

No no no please no. Only Japan knows how to make good monster movies.

Utter tosh. Agreed, the west shouldn't be making Godzilla movies but to say that only Japan can make good monster movies is just plain stupid.
