Happy Mika Mifune says divorce finalized

Actress Mika Mifune, 33, held a news conference in Tokyo to announce that her divorce from Joji Takahashi, 57, guitarist and vocalist of rock band THE TRA-BRYU, had been finalized on March 29.

The couple, who had long been known for their happy marriage despite the age gap, announced they would be splitting up in January 2015.

Mifune filed for divorce, seeking full custody of their 11-year-old daughter, claiming that her husband subjugated her to emotional abuse, or “moral harassment.”

With her legal battles over, a beaming Mifune told media on Thursday, “I am overjoyed and relieved by the happy conclusion," Sports Nippon reported Friday.

Her lawyer, who was also at the news conference, stated that the divorce settlement was resolved “peacefully with Mr Takahashi." However, in regards to visitation rights, both parties agreed to prioritize their daughter’s feelings first. For the time being, Takahashi will not be able to meet with his daughter and, instead, will receive two color photographs of her twice a year.

In response to finally winning sole custody over their daughter, Mifune tearfully admitted, “I felt as though I had to be stronger than ever to protect my daughter.”

Looking back on her 17 years and 6 months of marriage, she added, “I’ve learned many life lessons.”

April 1, coincidentally, was the birthday of Mifune's father, the late Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune. “I’m pleased that my birthday present to my father will be this ‘good news,'" the actress said.

Mifune said she intends to continue residing in Osaka, where she initially moved with her daughter after separating from her husband in December 2013.

Takahashi first met Mifune when she was 13 years old and married her on her 16th birthday, the legal age for marriage, attracting massive media attention.

In 2011, during an interview about her marriage, Mifune said: “Being with an older man, you don’t get treated like a child even at the age of 16, so I had to try my best to grow up. When we were dating, we always went out together with my mother. But the first time just the two of us had a date, Joji turned to me at Shibuya crossing and just out of nowhere said, ‘Hey, why don’t we get married?’

“When we married, people were saying ‘You’re too young, it’s not going to work. It’s just going to end in divorce.’ So I thought I needed to grow up quickly, to become an adult. Of course, there was a big gap between my ideal of an adult woman and myself at that age.”

The couple became known as a happy couple and in 2011, were named as “Partners of the Year,” an award given to ideal married couples by online dating service O-Net. Theyt often appeared on TV shows together.

Sports Nippon, quoting Mifune’s friends, reported that things started to go sour when Takahashi ordered a “curfew” for his wife whenever he was at home. Even if Mifune was out at business-related events, she had to be home by a certain time. On the other hand, Takahashi would hang out with his friends until the next morning, leaving his wife at home.

Mifune is guilty of moral harassment because as a wife and mother she should encourage a good relationship between father and daughter. Instead she has disparaged the father to the daughter and then steered the daughter into an alignment with her against the father. The abruptness of Mifune's change of heart toward Takashi indicates a new love interest as the route cause, rather than any genuine shortcomings (the media long portrayed the couple as emblematic of warm togetherness). If she wanted to be free of a broken romance she should be free; But she shouldn't have been free to emotionally abuse her own child and her ex by tearing them apart. Which one of you readers would actually be callous enough to NEGOTIATE 2 photographs a year? She has caused heinous harm to her own child; and the father knowing this, is broken hearted. Charles Noguhi's comments are very accurate in this thread, thanks Charles!

For the time being, Takahashi will not be able to meet with his daughter and, instead, will receive two color photographs of her twice a year.

Is that some kind of joke? If he is the Father and has not been abusing his child in any way then that is disgraceful. He should refuse any maintenance payment. Two colour photographs twice a year!

A wife is entitled to be free to divorce her husband. But for moral harrassment? There are far worse things in a marriage and that sounds like a poor excuse to end such a long running marriage and with a child involved.

This guy who's 24 years older married a 16-year old? And met her when she was 13? And then abuses her? And also only married her after her dad Toshiro died? He would definitely have gotten a severe beating if he had still been around.. This guy should surely be in jail for being a pedo

Dunno much about the Mifune family but surely they could have helped their daughter a bit more in the last 20 years?

Or they could have let her live her life... Toshiro Mifune was a married man in his 60's when Mika was born to his mistress. Then he went back with his wife, so his partenity consisted of sending money and receiving 2 photos of the child... Mika's mother had sole custody all the time. She introduced the junior high school girl to at least one famous middle-aged guy, organized their dates... I don't care if it's legal, I know it's sick. Then her tarento career was managed over that weird "family". I always found that disturbing. Mika is very resilient. I wish her the best.

Old Mifune is at least 50% culpable. He allowed, blessed and watched it for many years.

He was even more talented than we thought if he was able to do that post-mortem. I guess it's a scoop for you, but he died in 1997. That might be a coincidence, but the wedding probably allowed Mika (her mother and her husband) to access to her heritage without waiting her majority.

Was her marriage first consummated on her 16th birthday too?

This man scares me.

I can totally believe the hell she went through marrying some old school rich guy in this misogynistic culture that exploits the images of teenage girls to older men in a billion dollar merchandising and porn industry for example.

Guilty UNLESS (not until) proven guilty is the status quo. Remember now? Simply hurling accusations at a press conference hardly makes them true. Admitting facts into evidence is even more useless, as Family Court does not allow forensic evidence, and the judges have no qualifications to rule on probative value. Why? Lack of training, and no meaningful rules of evidence exist.

You're saying she ruined three lives based on unproven allegations. As I said, that doesn't make them untrue. He may very well have been everything she said, but she didn't prove it. Only they really know the truth.

@Strangerland: 'unproven does not equal untrue.' This was figured out 2000 years ago but you must have missed that class.

The biggest one is how to manipulate the system to tear a family apart. She probably already has target and victim #2 in her sights, and 2:1 he was the one who pushed her to insist on the no visitation clause.

the whole thing is messed up from start to finish

“I felt as though I had to be stronger than ever to protect my daughter.”

She knows the ex starts looking at girls when they are 12, so she hides away the daughter before she reaches that age.

flimsy unproven excuses,

It's proven what he is. She was a victim, as she was 13. No matter what she's said so far in the media.

Mifune has/had Daddy issues.

Really? She looks very happy, young, single, and free from his restrictions. That's a good reason to smile to me.

Unproven doesn't equal untrue.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Who cares about her smile. She ruined three lives with flimsy unproven excuses, and then smiles about it. That, my friends, is schizophrenia-like behavior.

I love her smile every time she does a news conference.

Typical Japanese divorce. Father loses and gets a pic of the kid.

Seems like a simple case of 'Throw law out the window.' IF there was abuse, why did it take so long for her to take action? Taking so long would suggest she is not a fit parent.

Moral Harassment? No such word in modern psychology.

Divorce as a birthday present for her father is a strange thing to say after a divorce with no background information. The whole case sounds like a big expensive and judge-mediated barrel of substantiated claims.

IF the claims are true, where are the police reports? Evidence? Sounds like a mighty thin case to me. Now she can find a younger guy and bleed him dry too.

The Judge might have liked the old Mifune movies more than music. Rarely do decisions follow law or reason.

As far as she goes, smiling for the cameras is not a natural reaction. Divorce rips families to shreds, and a press conference is not warranted unless we hear his side.

This story goes much deeper than anything that has been reported.

no one cares about these people. please run news, not infotainment.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

People, why are you even talking about some celebrities private lives!? Who cares! And leave them alone.

what am I even doing here ....

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

As for the 11-year-old daughter, if she "does not want to see her father" then she has been manipulated. Again, unless there is some abuse we don't know about.

I agree to a point. But perhaps the only abuse she dealt with was the emotional trauma of seeing her mother mistreated. My stepdaughter left her abusive husband years ago, and our 8 year old granddaughter still doesn't want to see her father, and there's no manipulation involved. In fact, we sometimes try to encourage her, but she refuses.

So then 37yo Takahashi 'fell in love' with a 13yo girl, married her 2-3 years later and abused her for the next 15-20 years?

Dunno much about the Mifune family but surely they could have helped their daughter a bit more in the last 20 years? Am sorry but any bloke approaching 40yp shouldn't even look at junior high school students let alone marry one.

People on this thread who only focus on the age gap are missing the point: couldnt care less if a 32yo man/woman marry a 70 something woman/man. We are talking about a teenage girl marrying a 40yo dude.

Their whole relationship ending with the 2pictures a year thing = theatre of the absurd!!

Hopefully she & her daughter can recover..............

"For the time being, Takahashi will not be able to meet with his daughter and, instead, will receive two color photographs of her twice a year."

Sorry, but unless there are some abuse issues we are not hearing about -- since it is quite normal for the custody-winner to be able to deny the other parent, usually the father, any visitation rights -- this is ideal ONLY for Mifune... unless of course Takahashi doesn't WANT to see his daughter. Two colour photographs do NOT make up for missing a childhood. As for the 11-year-old daughter, if she "does not want to see her father" then she has been manipulated. Again, unless there is some abuse we don't know about.

For Mifune herself, good for her. The "curfew" was ridiculous, and no one should be expected to have to live with that. It's a shame that she married so young, really, though if the outcome has been good, it's not really for me to say.

She's a lovely lady - met her at Comicon Japan last year, where she was giving some great insights into the Japanese influence on Star Wars, as well as her father's career. Wish her a happier future...

Having an older partner doesnt end in divorce it's not the age that matters. Respect love and trust is the key to the successful marriage. By the way congratulations. Me and my partner are 20 yrs old gap so i dont see any wrong of it. I love him so much . I love him more than today yesterday than tomorrow

@Moonraker

Thanks, my question exactly. He ll be married again within a year or so and just for get this child, as it seems the way.

It is sad to sad the emotional abuse against her daughter. But a news conference to announce your divorce! How about just a released statement instead. It just comes across of being full of yourself. Keep your private life private and let the news that matters filter through.

I think Toshiro _San would get right into his Seven Samurai character & rout this lout had he the chance! Anyway good for her!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

@Moonraker His daughter doesn't want to see him.

For the time being, Takahashi will not be able to meet with his daughter and, instead, will receive two color photographs of her twice a year.

Does this mean the daughter doesn't want to see him if this is "prioritising the daughter's feelings"? Sounds like a meagre outcome for him and the daughter if this is not the case.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

She's probably my favorite Japanese celebrity, and I hope she and her daughter can find their peace and happiness. How can you be so fortunate as to marry somebody as gorgeous as Mika Mifune, and then throw it all away? Maybe to him she was just a lovely possession instead of a life partner.

in regards to visitation rights, both parties agreed to prioritize their daughter’s feelings first. For the time being, Takahashi will not be able to meet with his daughter

Perhaps because the daughter witnessed how he treated her, and may have gotten some too.

To a 40 year old guy who marries a koko ninensei I'd like to say "WTF were you thinking"? But what HS girl wouldn't jump at the chance to be rich and famous, and have your family taken care of (he had to promise to take care of her mom too) all settled before they were even out of school?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Why!? I can never fathom why such personal information is always considered public information in Japan if you are a celebrity. Knowing the details of divorce is usually something only those involved and perhaps parents and close friends should ever know.
