Popular Japanese actress Haruka Ayase, 28, has shot her last scene on the set of the 52nd NHK "taiga" drama, the annual historical fiction TV series broadcast Sunday evenings in Japan.

This year's series, titled "Yae no Sakura," tells the tale of protagonist Yae Niijima, played by Ayase, a female warrior who fights at the Battle of Aizu with her iconic spencer rifle.

The series, which featured a star-studded cast, a theme song composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto and state-of-the-art visual effects, began airing on Jan 6 this year.

Ayase was presented with a bouquet of flowers by her co-stars moments after filming her final scene for the show on Monday. Speaking of her experiences on set, Ayase said, "There was a strong sense that we wanted to make something good. There was also a deep affection," Sankei Shimbun reported.

The 45-minute show, which is scheduled to run until Dec 15, airs on the NHK General network every Sunday at 8 p.m. and is repeated on Saturdays at 1:05 p.m.
