In an effort to increase awareness of the novel coronavirus in Japan and promote correct knowledge about infection prevention measures, Japan's Ministry of Health, Welfare and Labour has collaborated with the semiannual fashion festival Tokyo Girls Collection (TGC) to produce a video targeting the younger generation who may not fully realize their responsibility in flattening the curve.

Titled "Let's take action! 新型コロナウイルス感染症予防のためにわたしたちができること" (What we can do to prevent infection from novel coronavirus), the video introduces messages by 13 popular models from the "Mynavi presents 30th Tokyo Girls Collection Spring / Summer Collection," which was originally scheduled to take place at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium on Feb 29 but was then held without an in-house audience and broadcast on Line Live due to the coronavirus outbreak. Some of the models are also top influencers and television personalities.

Yua Shinkawa 新川優愛

I'm paying attention to washing my hands and gargling diligently. I've always been the indoor type, so I'm often at home, but when I have to go out to do something, I avoid crowded areas and times when I plan the route to my destination.

Concluding panel

It is said that we, the younger generation, are at lower risk of becoming seriously ill, but there is a possibility that we can spread the virus to those who are at high risk. To hasten the day when all of us will be able to meet again, each and every one of us should pay attention to our actions!

Insipid advice from vacuous demi-idols. Much of a muchness with the politicians.

Meanwhile, on March 31st, 146 people were tested in Tokyo. Which is better than the 41 people that were tested on March 30th.

Why or why especially in Japan do they listen more to the opinions of talents, models and semi-famous people than real experts. I get so irritated when I watch Japanese wide shows, etc. and on the panel they have a doctor, a researcher, a lawyer, and then some vapid comedian, who gets as much if not more air time sharing their opinions. And at the end of the day, it is the comedian that most will believe.

Oh my god... can we not do this?

Can we all just be adults for once? This is in insanely poor taste.

10 ( +10 / -0 )

Everything in Japan has to be reduced to the level of a five year-old child.

14 ( +14 / -0 )

the health ministry has been doing this to prepare for the onslaught? how about preparing for what to do in the outer prefectures where the medical infrastructure is not as advanced as Tokyo but has a disproportionately higher number of high risk elderly? Want to control younger folks? Start handing out tickets for business obstruction, their behavior will eventually require businesses to shut down, there, case solved.

Though I appreciate the effort and the message that the Ministry of Health is trying to reach to the younger audiences but it is best that sound advice should be given by health care professionals. For instance, instead of just having these girls list advice for young people, collaborate with a doctor and have the girls speak in an interview tone with the professional. Also, at the end, let the girl and doctor repeat the essential information in stopping the spread of COVID-19.

Wash your hands regularly.

Avoid crowded areas.

Stay home if you're sick.

Disinfect commonly touched areas (phones, door handles, backpacks, etc)

What timeline is this? I want off.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Whatever it takes. The young folks, as we all did at that age, think they are indestructible. It’s better than nothing, and it’s geared towards their favorite free time activity....fashion.

I bet their management is going to make a pretty penny at the government trough. If it gets through the heads of those who find J Pop amazingly wonderful, it might help.

Will TGC have a concert to reinforce their support for preventative measures (minus social distancing at their concert, of course.)?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Well that should get the attention of the 35-45 y/o single men...

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Please make this Orwellian nightmare stop.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

If it works, good.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Fail. All of these messages focus on HOW to prevent infection. Not one communicates WHY it is so important. Young people don't believe this virus is relevant to them because they've heard it won't kill them. They need to understand that if they get infected they pose a risk to others who are more vulnerable.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Ha, I missed the concluding panel. Maybe they should have started with that and not expect everyone to read through all the drivel before it to get to the important bit.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

The idea is smart considering the audience they are trying to appeal to. The problem is the execution.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I want a Corona virus mascot! Or maybe a face mask mascot!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Socially inept.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

top tip, gargling is a waste of time, 1: wash your hands regularly 2: stay away from people, ie self isolate 3: IF you have to go out for food or medical goods, social distancing is good, stay 6 feet or 2 meters away from everyone else, 4: if you can't work from home, and you must go to work ie a key worker like police, medical profession, fire, etc apply above rules. we all need to stop the spreading of this nasty virus, we all need to take part in breaking its rampant spread.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

disinfectant wipes every day!

glad you can find them, everywhere is sold out!

Why or why especially in Japan do they listen more to the opinions of talents, models and semi-famous people than real experts.

'Real experts' were busy claiming that masks were useless and closing borders was racist a couple months ago. Anyone that thinks that this pandemic is somehow a boon to the credibility of 'experts' is delusional.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

So, they have to resort to exploiting pretty little girlies to promote common sense measures to fighting the coronavirus? This is insipid, crass and a bit on the perverted side.

Absolutely deplorable and dumb.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Gargling after being around someone who is sick is misguided advice from old ad campaigns conducted by Listerine, etc. There was no proof that it was ever protective against viruses. But I guess at least it will give the Tokyo Girls confidence as they face the public each day with fresh breath...

Oh, quite sure a lot of guys would like to flatten those curves

The flip side to 3 week lock down here in the Uk, is that they have predicted a baby boom in 9 months time.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

So the point of all their stories is basically that they all still go out.
