I watched one episode of this steaming pile. Twee, nostalgic, typically reactionary Daily Mail crap. This rubbish gives the UK a bad name.

Of course, the majority of the rest of the world disagreeing with you couldn't POSSIBLY mean you might be wrong...

Although the writer did use "series" at times in the article, it would have been better to use it throughout, as in the UK, the British term "series" is used, instead of the American term "season" (at least regarding British TV shows). Thus:

"The sixth series of British television show“Downton Abbey..."

This would have earnt the writer of this article brownie points.

It's the Dowager Countess of Grantham's horrific quips.....

"In my day, a lady was incapable of feeling physical attraction until she had been instructed to do so by her mother."

"Of course it would happen to a foreigner. No Englishman would dream of dying in someone else's house."

"An aristocrat without servants is about as useful as a glass hammer."

“Things are different in America, they live in Wig Wams.”

On women's opinions...... “No, she isn’t, until she is married. And then her husband will tell her what her opinions are.”

"My maid. She's leaving. To get marred. How could she be so selfish?"

"I’m not a romantic… But even I concede that the heart does not exist solely for the purpose of pumping blood."

"My maid. She's leaving. To get marred. How could she be so selfish?"

I can see it have a somewhat of an appeal to women. but for men.....

I love it, and know a good number of other men who do, so there's go your theory. Of course now that Jimizo knows that I like Downton Abbey he'll detest it even more...

Downton Abbey has become a hugely popular in China regularly attracting more than 160 million viewers. British culture and the grand period settings seem to hit the spot. It is Violet one liners I like the most. My grandmother insists it authentic.

'Of course, the majority of the rest of the world disagreeing with you couldn't POSSIBLY mean you might be wrong...'

No exaggeration there of course unless you count the posts here as 'the majority of the rest of the world'. It had lower viewing figures than the major soap operas in the UK and some reality shows. I'd be fascinated to hear about this majority of the rest of the world. It's my opinion and others share it. I can't stand this kind of unimaginative, conservative British nostalgia. One quote about it got it right for me - a 'steaming, silvered tureen of snobbery'. They've churned this type of quaint crap out before and and they will again.

'Of course now that Jimizo knows that I like Downton Abbey he'll detest it even more...'

I don't get it. Why would you liking Downton Abbey make me detest it more?

Now you're being coy Jimizo.

@USN I can honestly say I don't know why your opinion of a TV drama would affect mine. Why would it?

Oh no! Will miss this series. Well what's next? Surprised Hollywood hasn't tried to cash in on it.

It's crap, a soap opera with pretensions. The viewing figures have been plummeting in the UK for some time with even loyal viewers growing tired with it. Dame Maggie herself said she would leave after this series, she knew it was finished. I hope Mr Selfridge is next, that is just unwatchable. Now, hopefully, ITV will think about producing a decent drama. I won't hold my breath though.

It's like "Upstairs Downstairs" but worse.

I meant, most men.

But I respect that. I think it's a very well produced high budgeted show, but it just bores me to death, but in my house, I'm outnumbered as I am the ONLY guy, Downtown Abbey is to be watched, unless I want to sleep on the couch.

Of course now that Jimizo knows that I like Downton Abbey he'll detest it even more...

Truth be told, I was taken back by that revelation as well. Lol

I don't know about that, I think the show is mostly popular with women, most men I know can't stand the show. Personally, I don't like the show, because I find it boring, but my wife loves it. I can see it have a somewhat of an appeal to women. but for men.....
