Hong Kong to step up film censorship

Poor HK. Nothing anyone can do to stop this absolute absorption by China.

Hong Kong is not the location, it is the people, and they are fleeing - fortunately, with its ties to the former British empire, they have many choices. Beijing will take over an empty shell.

One of the last great memories of a free Hong Kong was to see “Captain AMERICA and the Avengers” along with numerous other symbols of artistic freedom & creativity EVERYWHERE in the Spring of 2019.

The sleazemeister gossipmonger Rupert Murdock gives the press a very bad name. Note that his wife before Jerry Hall was from HK and when the CCP started exerting press controls over the city, it was no longer profitable for himself and he divorced her, dumped her like a rock!

A free unbiased media is essential to democracy and good government but some abusers like Murdock and his Faux News are the enemy of all mankind.

And this is why most of the world hates China.

All the value of HK will soon be gone as anything China touches turns into cheap garbage.

I think we can say its really CCP authorities. At the same time, while we point the finger at China for censorship, you can already see censorship in the US media and social media.

That is a very lazy and careless statement to make.

Social media and any kind of media has always had a certain degree of censorship, ie profanity, nudity.

The recent crackdown on the spread of misinformation by social media that has been leading to real life death, is not even comparable to the CCP censorship on anyone that questions or criticizes them. Look at any US media and it’s basically a free for all of saying anything you want about the government. Do that in China and you will be in a labor camp by the one if the day.

And to think some on here complaining about Great Britain bringing democracy and civilized society to places such as HK. You must be feeling quite foolish now.

Meh, not like HK film industry is in good shapes anyhow.

Nobody is taking up the mantle of the oldies, nowadays I still see 60-70s year old actors at work.

If there are any citizens there not already in the process of escaping to a freedom-loving nation, then there is zero hope for their future. They are already part of Communist China - Game Over.

GB never "brought democracy" to HK. They had a 99 year lease and never allowed the natives any vote.

HK should have been an independent nation. But that hope is over.

What is happening to Hong Kong is fascism imposing itself. Be like us, think like us or go to prison. The world needs to wake up to this terrible new dark shadow of Chinese fascism, because the next step will be invading its neighbours to absorb them too.

It never really was communist in the first place. They just call themselves communist as it sounds better than the truth - an oligarchy. But for some reason, so many posters here want to push the CCP euphemism of them being communists. I always wonder why they play into the CCP's hands like that.

That's easy to say, but much harder to do, when the masters dedicate a significant portion of their resources into ensuring that the enslaved can't rise up and liberate themselves. For example, in North Korea, the government doesn't feed its people. Nor does it provide them with food. Nor are they allowed to own things, like meat. So they go and forage for crickets in the hillside. These people are in a constant state of starvation, in which all efforts go into eating and not dying. No energy left for a rebellion.

The idea that freedom is easy to fight for is one perpetuated by cinema where we only see the stories of successful rebellion, and not the countless stories of rebellion never started that are the norm. As people with resources, we wonder why those without wouldn't fight. But it's exactly because they don't have those resources.

Not to the same level as China will do. Only the huge entertainment companies that want to release in mainland China are likely to self-censor content.

The vast majority of content in the US is from independent creators. Censorship happens when the CCP attempt to claim anything they can to have a platform block, remove, or de-monetize content that is not providing a good, untrue, view of the CCP-Govt.

There are lots of content creators https://www.youtube.com/advpodcasts who lived in China for over a decade and planned to live the rest of their lives in China, but Xi's authoritarian censorship and people disappearing convinced them to take their families and run to other countries. They love China and the Chinese people. It is just the CCP-Govt they are less than thrilled about. Censorship about buildings failing and collapsing due to builders cutting corners, fake concrete, shotty buildings without govt inspection. Sometimes average citizens are the problem. Don't worry, they show lots of Chinese Govt propaganda too. Showing where people not following COVID lockdown rules, are actually locked into their apartments by the govt.

Is there any question that Hong Kong representatives would NOT pass this new censorship law? I have no doubt Carrie Lam will get it through.

Communism is actually pretty cool. The Chinese Communist Party, not so much.
