I haven't bothered to watch "First Man", but this looks like something worth watching at some point!!
David L Reinke
Saw this film in IMAX last week -- simply wonderful. The footage is really quite amazing.
This film is well worth your effort to see, and on the biggest screen you can find.
Even if you lived through this, as I did, it all seems new again.
jcapan
zones, I'd recommend giving First Man a watch. Thought it was well done and deserved more recognition that it received during awards season.

What I don't get, everything of moon landings only resorts to the past. 2019 with advanced technology and no one has put a man on the moon at all since then. This was the the 60s when processors were purely calculators.
Can someone give a detailed explanation as to why there has not been any moonwalks since then?
Silvafan
1) Some speculate that it was staged. It was an advertise ploy to convince the world of Americas dominance over the Communists in the Soviet Union ( a game Putin is still playing), but apparently, there are items like mirrors left up there that are used to measure things like the distance from Earth as the moon rotates farther away. However, they could have been placed there later after we actually got the capability.
2) Some speculate that there might be something up there that governments don't want the general public to know about because it could cause mass panic and civil unrest, for example, evidence of life. The religious fanatic's heads might explode and Doom's day cults might start coming out of the woodworks. Then all kinds of questioning will start to happen. Since there is only a small number of nations with capabilities of sending humans to the moon, I imagine that only a few super powerful nations would know of such details.
The moon never spins, so we always see the same side facing the Earth, and both sides are completely different in many ways. The other side facing outward hidden from us most people never see, so most people don't know what is hiding over there.
It makes you wonder if China really did grow plants on the Dark side of the moon, or they were allowed to stage such an event as a peace offering for negotiations with countries like the US. Accomplishments like that are big deals for communist countries to show their superiority over the West and galvanize the people's support for the government. Cheating in the Olympics is another example.
3) There is also an agreement among the nations of the world that says no country can ever own any part of the moon. It is an agreement similar to Antarctica.

You could start with this video. A NASA astronaut, Don Pettit, explains that:
I'd go to the moon in a nanosecond. The problem is we don't have the technology to do that any more. We used to but we destroyed that technology and it's a painful process to build it back again.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16MMZJlp_0Y
Kind of curious that NASA also "accidentally" erased the original moon landing tapes.
The original recordings of the first humans landing on the moon 40 years ago were erased and re-used, but newly restored copies of the original broadcast look even better, NASA officials said on Thursday. (Reuters)
"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Moon" (youtube) is a good watch.
Silvafan
Sounds, really suspicious with all the accomplishments made over the decades with landings on Mars, asteroids, and comets.
If anyone was to go the moon now with video, it would be easy to tell that the original moonlanding was staged. I don't know if it was, but the old footage would be compared. It would be an embarrassment for the US to find out that they lied to the people. It would be the same for the astronauts who played along. That is one possible reason the US government doesn't want anyone going
Silvafan
Let's just say NASA came across something it shouldn't have and had to figure out a way to keep the rest of us in the dark lest we go apes hit.
Kenji Fujimori
I am no conspiracy theorist do not worry, Silvafan, number 2 you quoted was funny, never heard that one. I hear conspiracies about Stanly Kubrick, the weird Flat Earth theory-which is bs, etc.
Though if mars rovers made it to mars, wouldnt the distance and cost be less to at least attempt another moon landing, How did Nixon get great reception to talk on the phone to the astronauts ON THE MOON, but when I was on a business trip to NY last week, AT&T reception was awful?? especially on a 4K video download.
One theory which could be plausible, is the development of weapons in space, there is already evidence of this and knowing why magically China want to go to the moon, would explain this theory in part too, due to the fact they built fake islands in Asia with military bases and Senkaku also. Growing plants on the moon by Chinese claims is funny at best, we can not just judge CG images or blurred/final cut video either. Unless there is concrete evidence of the Chinese planting anything then it is just 'plausible' As for further moon landings, it should be done, why hasnt Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk sent anyone to the moon, they are all hoping for Mars. Though at least sending a manned moon landing on behalf of a private company would be great PR and great for their shareholders to fund the Mars mission. As for Gov they really should focus on more moon missions, instead of wasting trillions of dollars on wars in the middle east with no 'WMD' and all for oil obviously.. all that money could of been invested for moon missions and a potential mars manned mission by now! whats your thoughts?

@Kenji Fujimori
There's also the small problem of the Van Allen Radiation Belts surrounding Earth. Talking about a mission to Mars, a NASA engineer said that ...
"As we get further away from Earth we'll pass through the Van Allen Belts, an area of dangerous radiation. Radiation like this could harm the guidance systems, onboard computers or other electronics ... Sensors aboard will record radiation levels for scientist to study. We must solve these challenges before we send people through this region of space." -- from the 3.00 min mark.

So does that mean technology from the 60s and 70s was more advanced than now?
Kenji Fujimori
weedkila
There are still alternative routes and that still deflects from a concrete answer as to why zero moon MANNED missions not rovers or CG videos and images are not planned and why President Nixon at the time had clear reception to talk to someone on the MOON yet AT&T infrastructure is almost third world to get decent reception..
Michael T Burns
@Kenji Fujimori
No, it was just less succeptable to damage from satic and the type of radiation. Circuit boards and chips today are so tiny (down to around 7nm for some chips now?) that simply touching them without grounding yourself first, can destroy them. ESD is a problem with some of our best technology today!
So there’s that, and the fact that they took a path through an area near the north pole where the belts are “thinner” (I don’t know how else to describe it, but there are plenty of diagrams online of the Earth’s magnetic fields and such).
Still, there were reports from those astronauts of seeing “shooting stars”, even with thier eyes closed, while transiting through that area. We didn’t know a lot of information about those belts at the time, but we now know that those flashes of light were actually radiation particles that were making it through the spacecraft, and through the astronauts’ bodies.
So they really weren’t completely safe. We just didn’t realize the possible/probable impact at the time. Now that we know, we have to be cautious and come up with appropriate safety measures.
Finally, we haven’t been back since then because there was no reason to throw the kind of money nedded, at the task. Neil Degrasse Tyson has explained this in detail, time and time again. Search videos of him on Youtube for more intelligent answers than mine.
Serrano
I'll just say that Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins had some serious balls to go to the moon, some 380,000 km from the Earth with 1960s technology.
Kobe White Bar Owner
can anyone else spot the front screen projection line?
Kenji Fujimori
So to throw a Trillion dollars on a war made up with fallacies of 'WMD' to take a countrys oil is better than spending that Trillion dollars on another manned mission? there are still no answers to the questions asked and to squash conspiracy theorys is to continually keep sending manned moon missions.
No one also answered why President Nixons phone reception was crystal clear in the 60s to someone on the moon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieGKIh3koAI

Probably because the astronauts were orbiting the Earth and not on the moon. If you take a look at the video I mentioned above, from the 32 min mark you will see how they deceived their audience. They simply placed a shaped piece of cardboard across one of the circular windows, dimmed the space craft's internal lights and then filmed the visible part of Earth shining thru the window to make it look like they were thousands of miles away from Earth. But they were not, they were in low earth orbit. That is actual NASA footage not shown on TV. Whether it was released accidentally or by someone who wanted the truth to be known is another question. Fool me once ...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xciCJfbTvE4
Kenji Fujimori
And the whole Stanley Kubrick association?
Deadforgood
I still think it was staged but we most likely don't go there now because its too risky. You don't wanna know what happens to our planet if something happens to the moon.
albaleo
First, it wasn't crystal clear compared to normal telephone reception at the time. It sounded quite fuzzy to me. Second, the phone signal was relayed by a great big transmitter and receiver with no competing telephone traffic. If you and your partner can afford such equipment you should be able to speak quite clearly to each other too if you are more or less in line of sight.
Jimizo
I just knew this story would attract conspiracy theorists.
They are so predictable. The most uniform thinkers out there.
Kenji Fujimori
So why not a 2019 manned mission? still can not answer.. I do think there was a manned mission in the past, but it is mysterious as to why no manned missions now without guess theory or any other things you want to state. Money, technology is there, yet nothing has happened..
Kenji Fujimori
Even our Jaxa (Japanese equivalent of Nasa) would not plan for a manned moon mission, why? Russians also till now have not set foot on the moon, so it is nothing about Nasa per se, but other nations have dared not tried, yet there money and technology is a different story today than in the 60s..
Kenji Fujimori
Chinese boast about 'planting seeds on the moon' but how can we just guess based on CG and blurred final cut imagery..
Kenji Fujimori
And lastly the questions on youtube about why the landing pads are very clean and no debris or anything? did Buzz have a vaccum cleanr or a broom to sweep it away? that part confuses me and as I stated I do believe it did happen, but those dang conspiracy theorists makes you think about those details a tad bit..
weedkila
On the contrary, the most uniform thinkers are those that swallow the official narrative without question and then defend it by yelling 'conspiracy theory'. Accusing people of being a 'conspiracy theorist' is a cheap way of shutting down any form of questioning or debate while pretending to have all the answers. The posters above are right to ask the questions about this. It's called critical thinking.
Kenji Fujimori
As a Japanese I would much rather watch a manned moon mission IF it happens this year or next for example, instead of the Olympics.
Jimizo
Let me guess, you don’t accept the climate change consensus among scientists either?
I can go on with the conspiracy theory list if you want.
weedkila
@Kenji Fujimori -- There are still alternative routes...
What are the alternative routes then? As I understand it the Earth is completely surrounded by these radiation belts, but I might be mistaken.
weedkila
@Jimizo
Just because there's a so-called consensus it doesn't make it true. Consensus is totally irrelevant to science. Science is not about the weight of numbers on the side of an argument, but what the facts are. What the evidence is.
Serrano
@Kenji Fujimori I'd like to see a Japanese manned moon mission too, but I still wanna watch some Olympics!
I would think that by now there would be several nations seriously vying to be the second nation after the U.S. to land people on the moon. Better than that though would be for these nations to launch a joint mission in the spirit of international cooperation. As long as they don't bring HAL along.
Jimizo
I thought so. We don’t need to go further down the list.
So predictable.
Chip Star
Why?
DaveAllTogether
There was none. It was impossible to fake the landings back then given the film technology of the day.
In 1969 a single Saturn V cost $325 million. That would be about $2.5 billion today. In 1973 NASA reported to Congress that the entire Apollo program cost $25.4 billion. That is about $175 billion today
They conspiracy types do indeed raise questions. However those questions are easily answered. As for the landing area being clean remember that there is no atmosphere on the moon. Dust will not be blown around in the wind.
Critical thinking would not dismiss the readily available answers to all the CTs questions. Critical thinkers would not instantly dismiss said answers. A cheap way of shutting down someone's argument is to call them a sheep.
Kenji Fujimori
Why didn't the Russians send anyone to the moon at the time and currently, they did succesffully put Sputnik and do have good innovations for space, I guess lack of funds?
Meanwhile Jaxa has not sent anyone in space with our own rockets yet, all the money disappered to the 'Olympic Funds'
Kenji Fujimori
On the topic of space, other countries are catching up:

If we go back, lets bring some colonists. We'll have plenty of volunteers.

I thought the conspiracy of a fake landing was put to rest long ago.
Even though primitive by current standards, Russia had the capacity to basically monitor to an extent whether or not a vehicle landed on the moon. (manned or unmanned). With the level of espionage, infiltration and spying of the cold war era - nothing much was secret.
Which brings up the Big Point. How do you get a cast of thousands (which there were) @ NASA and elswhere to join in on the conspiracy of faking the landing, and no one ever, ever let on. No One. And the Russians had eyes and ears Everywhere. Everywhere.
Did Magellan circumnavigate the world (well almost) with the most basic of instruments - compasses, astrolabes, sundials etc through enormous difficulties into literally the Heart of Darkness?
Yes.
So 450 years on in modern 20th C computer / rocket age, the possibility of a moon landing is more than highly highly possible. Insanely difficult, but not impossible - obviously.
And I must catch this documentary.
albaleo
Not only that, but have them repeat the performance for subsequent landings, including the mission that failed.
extanker
There haven't been any more manned moon landings because there is no reason to go back. It's an enormous and costly undertaking to do something for no other reason than to prove that we can, which we already did.
We can learn things from places like asteroids, comets and Mars. Until someone wants to start colonizing the place, there's not much on the moon that we didn't learn when we were there before to justify the effort.
And to the conspiracy nuts, it's hilarious that you believe the government could keep a fake moon landing a secret for 50 years, yet can't keep which porn stars the president had sex with a secret for 2 years.
BackpackingNepal
(2019) The Wandering Earth has been one of the best Sci-Fi movie for the last 20 years.
This is what most people are actually talking about recently.

@albaleo
That's a great point. It's like the conspiracy nuts think there was only one trip.
CrazyGaijin
Oh, come on! Everyone knows there is aliens on the moon. Just look at all that CGI evidence scattered around YouTube.
