I guess he's the only person in Japan or the world that wishes this.... Well I can one-up him. I wish it never happened.
Konsta
What would he say if granted two wishes?

Love Love LOVE this guy, he has made some superb, beautiful films, all highly recommended. I look forward to seeing this new one too. He started as a documentary-maker, I wish I could see some of those too.

I don't like this sort of nonsense. Yes, we ALL wish it didn't happen but it did. Making wished about it and movies - by which you can further make cash - is going to help? We should and do morn the loss of life on March 11, as well as the many thousands who will lose their lives because of radiological contamination and cancers in future.
Why not focus on reality and WISH (ie. do action) the govt stopped forcing people to live in poisoned areas and eat bad food?

Hi Beangry and everyone. I think it is OK to wish although just wishing will not realistically change anything; but it brings out the good side of the wisher. Anyway, I am writing for another subject. As you may have guessed I am an Aussie, just arrived in Japan not long ago. Before I arrived I was assured that there is no issues with radiation in Food, the air, etc. I am in Yokohama. What is concerning me now is that I have read from comments on JT over the passed several weeks - yes, from you guys, suggesting that there is in fact radiation affected food etc. What is the real story here? Have I been told lies? Appreciate some response on this matter

Sweet, really. I wish it were so.

Too bad it can never happen. Feelings can be changed, maybe, but you can't bring someone back to life who died. Yet.

beangry: Koreeda 's film is a fantasy and he's making a statement about loss and sadness. Who doesn't occasionally daydream about what was and wished it could have been changed?
Robert Dykes
I wish Japan never tried to take over the world 65 years ago. I wish Japanese people were not so sad becuase more people have committed suicide in the last 50 years than all the people who died in the earthquake and tsunami. I wish there were no fatal car wrecks, cancer, child abductions, rape.
wishing is pointless unless you can do something about it.

what had happened last march was really a devastating incident to the people who are affected losing their loveones and to the businesses as well. some companies shutdown was another blow to workers who depend their living by these establishments.some companies reduced their work schedules from 3 to 4 days work to save energy but some told their workers to go on leave or yasumi for the reasons that working conditions are low means "hima" . this is the most painful since it was an indefinite leave. no assurance when to return to work. what happened to workers who doesnt have nenkin, koyo hokken.what will happen to them? other companies doesnt mind to make some arrangements to give their workers kimochi or a gift token for their services rendered, their loyalty and sincerity to do their job for many years. it is sad to note that some experienced these especially to gaijins who lost their jobs and their brokers or recruiters who doesnt mind the welfare of their recommendees in the company. my only prayers that japan will overcome and keep moving on for the upliftment of their spirit and stand on its feet against the recent tragedy. I pray for the new generations and the next generations to come. Good luck Nippon and Gambare! a journey to a new Japan and the sun is still hot for japan's glory. Yes, YOU CAN DO IT!

You guys are upset at with me?? I'm not surprised. I know the film is fantasy, but that is the point: the Japanese have done nothing but present the facts as fiction and fiction as facts. Listening to "experts" who tell us cesium is healthy Nd that 100 mSv won't harm pregnant mothers is the REALITY we have here. When many people die from cancer, this same moron will WISH it don't happen. Instead of trying to prevent the living from dying, he's just trying to make a quick buck out of those who we can't do anything for. That's what I see.
This isn't fantasy. It's all too real.

Come on, peeps, this is just the kind of soppy Japanese kitschy soundbites that comes from interviewing someone on the topic of the interview. If it's a 'tarento' like Ebi-chan or someone advertising for Hagendaaz they'd say, "I'd like to eat Hagendaaz with a boy who says 'I love you'", if it were an add for cars the celeb would say, "I'd like to drive with someone I love", etc. In this case the guy is in part advertising his film "I Wish" so of course he's expected to come up with some cheesy "I wish this or that" line. The sentiment of his wish is of course a good one, but it comes off as cheesy, in my opinion, to be presented as such.
That said, I haven't seen any of his movies, but it sounds like they aren't that bad.

Sir, your wish just came true.

Except for the fact that the original movie title is called "奇跡”

Geez, beangry, give it a rest. You don't have to be angry all the time. The guy is a director who makes thoughtful, not-very-commercial movies (DEFINITELY not after the quick buck). He's expressing the same wish that many of us would have.

So what was his comment in Japanese, then?

A quote from a character in the film "Grumpier Old Men":
"Well, you can wish in one hand, and crap in the other- see which gets filled first"...
"I Wish" is also a great Stevie Wonder song...
This sappy film directer/philosopher can take a hike.
Inspiration is the shizz...
