I've found a number of Indian Hindu's that I've worked with, to be prejudiced towards the Indian Muslims living in India. Most of it's simply been verbal banter, pretty much the same as the English have towards the Welsh, though when you see this prejudice being acted out by their Politicians back home - it sort of makes you think...

I've not watched the TV Series, though from comments here, there appears to be a discrepancy over who it's portraying Hindu/Muslim, and the discussions also appear to reflect the same divisions I mentioned above, I don't think that the show's creators planned on creating further divisions....

This series has generally positive reviews from both professional critics, and the general public. I found it okay, myself, from what I've seen so far. Not great. But, certainly not bad. It seems to be aimed at a pre-teen/teen/YA crowd, which is outside my demographic. So, it's not quite as appealing to me as the other Marvel series on Disney+ have been.

I notice that the people who seem to have a problem with it are the same people who had a problem with Brie Larson's Capt Marvel, the Rose Tico character in the Star Wars sequels, or whine that the various new Star Trek series are too "woke" (as if Star Trek hasn't been "woke" from day one). The same folks who think Rage Against The Machine have suddenly become "woke", and should just stick to music. (WTF did they think RATM were raging against, previously?)

Personally, I'd rather be "woke" than a close-minded, narrow-thinking, person, stuck in the past, while the world changes around me. That is exactly like the oyajis in the LDP that everybody here complains about. Yet, when it comes to their own views about women, religion, LGBT+, etc, the commenters here are often no better than those LDP dinosaurs.

The show takes a similar approach to talking about the Partition in 1947 when British India was divided along religious lines into India and Pakistan, triggering one of the largest mass migrations in history. The violence from tensions between Hindus and Muslims led to a refugee crisis, which the show weaves in as part of Khan’s family history.

I always found it interesting people often blame the British for the mess but if we are to be honest it was the Muslim leaders that rejected a unified India insisting on separation.

I found it even more interesting when you look at India's history and note that for a long period much of the Hindu population was under Muslim rule before the British.

I wonder if the writers are next going to delve into the fact Hindu majority India has remained a democracy since independence but Muslim Pakistan has had coup after coup, civil war splitting the country into 2 countries and more could.

If you want to show something go all the way the good The bad and the ugly ( leave Clint out).

So will this also be banned in Muslim countries along with Buzz Lightyear?

Disney makes no sense ( well I guess if profits are the only goal then it makes perfect sense.)

First it caters to the LGBTQ....with the Lesbian kiss I Buzz Lightyear now they cater to the total opposite end of the spectrum Muslims that do not and will not accept LGBTQ...... make up your mind Disney!

Also agree with others who think this is taking things a bit too far.

I have grown up on a diet of American TV shows and movies and never for a moment thought that there was nobody like me represented. Agreed that it was a different culture and context but quite enjoyable nonetheless.

Watched 'The Wonder Years' as a teenager and remember thinking how Kevin Arnold's world and my world were so much different, but it was entertaining nonetheless.

A few years later a show on similar themes inspired by Wonder Years was made in my country but it was so trashy that I could not watch beyond one episode. There was a clear difference between American TV productions and the shows and movies produced in my country, that is why I preferred watching American TV serials.

The third pic shows the Zakir family watching with 'Miss Marvel' written in Hindi.

Pakistanis can't understand written Hindi but since spoken Hindi and Urdu are quite similar they may be able to understand if this is the dubbed version of the show.

If it is only the subtitled version then they may as well watch the English original without subtitles.

I'm waiting for a new superhero to represent me - white, heterosexual, mid-40s, balding and cynical. We haven't had one since George Costanza.

TIme for an update.

All the dozens of backwards nations from Malaysia to the Palestinian Territories that recently banned another animation with a 1 second kiss between two female characters...yet will no doubt embrace this. "The characters are just like us!". LOL

Woke gender politics and bad stories written by poor, politically driven writers...voila! It's not surprising that Woke shows are bad. They focus on lecturing the audience and forget a comic book film still needs a good solid story with compelling characters and threatening villain.

Cinema has provided some of the most inspirational and thought provoking films

Mississippi Burning, Schindler's List, Roots, Twelve Years a Slave, The Imitation Game, Wilde, to name but a few.

Wonderful classics that needs no political agenda to appreciate the message.

Next James Bond girl wearing a niqab ?

I know that movies use churches sometimes but one can enter readily (mosqes...no).

All the taboos for other religions make them poorly shiny to viewer´s interest.

All the more than moral banning suddenly disappearing especially for Islam that involves political moves from the start ?

In the USA it is going backward, same about going against abortion rights for some Christians pro-control in fact.

Liberty for all.

It could have been done better in my opinion, the treatment is completely focused on that aspect and makes no effort into making other parts of the story also important. The people responsible clearly choose a target audience and make the series adapted to them completely.

lets not hide or pretend that Disney agenda is to entertain with awe and fantasy. No!

“For Muslims in particular, representation matters a lot because, for many years, misrepresentation has mattered too much,” he said.

There is plenty of "representation" not only in the middle east but pretty much in any muslim country throughout the world, as far as I remember from my time in SE Asia.

Now if think you need to be represented by a piece of movie made in the US (a nation mostly white, christian) that's your own business, just find it funny how the whole world wants to be addressed and "represented" in movies etc. made in a particular western country, the American media is not world's property, you can always go watch a turkish movie or sth

Promoting that women are inferior to men and also that wearing the hijab is great and not a tool for oppression at all. What could go wrong?

Kamala is not a Muslim name. It’s a Hindu name and the word ‘Kamala’ or ‘Kamal’ means Lotus in Sanskrit.

The word might have been borrowed into Urdu or Persian just like a loanword.

In Turkish the name Kemal has a different meaning but with similar positive connotations.
