Holly Otaku Batman! Can the Americans come up with something original?

YuriOtaniNOV. 04, 2015 - 08:06AM JST Holly Otaku Batman! Can the Americans come up with something original?

Original like making fun of Star Trek fans as nerds?

I'd like there to be a good Star Trek show out there, but I'm skeptical of the people involved so far and I'm skeptical of the CBS paywall. Something seems strange about taking a show about a utopian post-national, post-commerce society and locking it down to a place where only subscribers from one country can see it.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

@YuriOtani,

Really? As opposed to Japanese televisions shows that are all either same-old talking heads variety shows with "celebrities" eating and exclaiming "UMAI" about every bite, or boring J-Romance dramas or samey anime for the last 3 decades?

Come on, Japan does TV badly.... There hasn't been a Star Trek series on Television for a decade, and you claim that they "can't come up with something original"? Kay.

I am looking forward to this. Star Trek TNG was good but I think it went too far in terms of being too utopian. Series like Enterprise were pretty good. My choice, why don't they go to the period from when the show went off the air to the beginning of TNG. After all, it was 75 years since the original and TNG, so I am sure that there was an Enterprise then doing things out in space that could be a good series without having to reinvent a new Kirk or any of the original cast.

Holly Otaku Batman! Can the Americans come up with something original? compared to Japan theyre as original as they come, and they actuially make TV shows worth watching. for someones whos partner is American you certainly dont seem to like them.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

To infinity and beyond.... no wait... may the force be with you..... no wait.... live long and remake.... that's it!

Hurrah!! Trek for Life!! That should put those Whovians in their place,

2 ( +4 / -2 )

These guys are really going to milk this star trek for what it's worth and move on if it doesn't make any money. What happened to making sci-fi films and shows with some creativity? Firefly died and it was a perfectly good series with a lot more potential. Stargate died without a proper ending.

Olrik - thank you for the link. I would rather watch this a thousand times more than watch the "new" things and "ideas" that major producers have.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

The new series will “introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966,” CBS said.

In other words: We can't tell you what it's about, just in case it's as bad as "Babylon 5," but we're pretty sure there's a spaceship and aliens."

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Nice, I'm looking forward to it. I've liked all Star Treks, except Enterprise, which I couldn't watch because of its horrible opening song.

Hurrah!! Trek for Life!! That should put those Whovians in their place,

Since when are these mutually exclusive fandoms?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

A lot can happen between now and 2017.

Lets hope we are all still here to see it ;)

The new series will air exclusively in the United States

I'm sure it will also be available worldwide on torrent sites minutes after the broadcast.

Holly Otaku Batman! Can the Americans come up with something original?

If only J-TV would take your advice

6 ( +7 / -1 )

What's everybody's favorite episodes of the original series? Mine are "Errand of Mercy" and "Mirror Mirror."

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The shows are always free for the first 4 episodes, then if you want to watch the older ones, you have to pay...so torrents galore will happen.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Brainiac, I loved Mirror Mirror as well, but I'm a sucker for City on the Edge of Forever, as corny as it was. Spock in a peacoat? So cool! Written by Harlan Ellison, no less.

Reeeally looking forward to seeing what they'll do with the new Trek. Would be nice to see them take it to an edgier, darker place, a la the BSG reboot, although I am sure many Trek purists would take some issue with that.

Let's remain cautiously optimistic!

Engage!

Holly Otaku Batman! Can the Americans come up with something original?

I'd sooner watch one Star Trek episode over and over again than any number of Japanese 'tokusatsu' things. It's laughable that any Japanese person can criticise Americans for a lack of originality when Japanese studios have been churning out that formulaic drivel decade after decade.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

A Canadian TV Series called Continuum which just ended in October after 4 seasons and 42 episodes will keep those sci-fi fans of time travel busy for awhile but since the first 3 seasons are on Netflix, and the series is that good, maybe not long enough with binge watching being a real possibility. Either way, I am jonesing for the next Trek Movie and a TV series would be great!!!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@bass4funk

Brilliant.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@YuriOtani I doubt anyone's produced anything on TV better than The Wire, Deadwood, Breaking Bad, etc. Although The Wire is probably in a class of it's own.

WakarimasenNOV. 04, 2015 - 09:51AM JST Hurrah!! Trek for Life!! That should put those Whovians in their place,

Keep dreaming.

I haven't watched every single Star Trek series, but by far and away the best was Deep Space Nine. The story arcs within that series were superb, the acting and production were both excellent, and it's the closest ST will come to Dr. Who, IMHO.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Bring back the Federation Timeship Relativity and have them exploring the entire Star Trek space-time continuum.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Is this pre-prequel Trek, or post-prequel pre-original Trek?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Chris Whitmore:

"...samey anime for the last 3 decades?"

At least the artwork has changed. Looks much better IMHO, and not just because of computers. K-on v robotech artwork...no match.

Will the new star trek be a new series or a continuance of the original, original movie, next generation, deep space 9, voyager? If going to continue existing series, pleeease do next-generation. So much better IMHO.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@YuriOtani I doubt anyone's produced anything on TV better than The Wire, Deadwood, Breaking Bad, etc. Although The Wire is probably in a class of it's own.

This. I'd also add Game of Thrones and Mad Men to that list. Some of the most original writing in America is on TV right now. My knowledge of Japanese TV is comparatively new, but I can't imagine that's true for it's programs. You fell right into that one Yuri...

I actually don't mind reboots as long as they do something interesting with it. I'm not a huge fan, but Star Trek kind of lends it self to new crews and going where no one has gone before...

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Sorry, not all people like star trek

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

@MrBum I agree about MM. I'm not sure GOT gets there for me. It's one show I've never been able to re-watch. Do you think Battlestar Galactica is better than GOT? Maybe a stretch of a comparison: Scifi and fanatasy. I think BG was better maybe. I can't figure out what serious moral or philosophical issues GOTs does well. The political intrigue doesn't register very much for me on GOT. The U.S made a lot of groundbreaking comedies also: Larry Sanders, Seinfeld, Curb, etc. Star Trek was a pleasure for me as a kid. And it's still a guilty pleasure. It should always be on TV in some form or another. For me, Voyager was better than DS9, by the way. Never got DS9 at all. Japan? I don't know. Maybe if one likes cartoons. UK makes great TV. Canada makes far better shows than Japan and it's a tiny country compared. But in a country where people get most of their sleep on the train, what can one expect?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Sorry, not all people like star trek well theres certainly enough for them to keep making new TV series. not to mentions the 12 movies 13th one in 2016. name me any Japanese TV or movie with that much success!?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

"name me any Japanese TV or movie with that much success!?"

Pokemon, dragonballz, one piece (on for as long as all star treks combined).

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

Pokemon, dragonballz, one piece , lol Im talking about world success and money generated, not something thats almost entirely generated in Japan. Pokemon Dragonball is for kids, or adults that havent grown up yet. Annime loses its appeal to grown ups outside Japan

Please do not be the sub universe, please too all that we love dear and behold with genuine affection let it be prime universe.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why are they waiting until 2017? What's wrong with 2015?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

There hasn't been a Star Trek TV series since Enterprise in 2005.

It's about time.

A dozen years is a lifetime in TV world.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

wtfjapan:

I personally don't care for those animes, but they have enough world success, as much as star trek if not more. And yes, anime is a niche market, but so is sci-fi, star trek even more so. This is coming from someone who loves TNG, original movies, enterprise, and the new movies. We are star trek otaku, bud :)

Given up on claiming Americans lack originality, then?

Jumin RheeNOV. 05, 2015 - 07:09AM JST

I personally don't care for those animes, but they have enough world success, as much as star trek if not more.

A bold claim. Any figures to back it up? I seriously doubt it personally.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

anime is a niche market, but so is sci-fi, star trek even more so considering scifi has had some of the biggest blockbusters in the history of film, eg Starwars, Matrix, Star Trek, Superman, Ironman, Avengers, Hulk, Alien/Aliens, Close Encounters, ET, Armageddon, Independance Day, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters etc etc SCIFi is far from niche more like mainstream and has generated billions$ over the decades

@shallots

Yeah, GoT probably falls under the guilty pleasure category. But it's a guilty pleasure with amazing production values and great characters and acting. I haven't watched BG, but I've only heard good things about it.

Those comedies you mentioned are all great. My local network used to play re-runs of Seinfeld every night, and it never got old. I used to love the Simpsons too. The few recent episodes I've seen weren't nearly as good as the golden age, but it's the Simpsons, so it still gets a pass in my book I guess.

If you don't like Star Trek.... Why did you feel the need to come and comment on an article about Star Trek.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

@YuriOtani:

America has brought you a significant amount of the world's current/new technology, entertainment, medicine and science. I think we can cut them some slack on making a TV show or superhero movie, yeah?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I love the old series. Never liked anything since except for the jj ashrams first movie. I was shocked and felt rpped off when his second movie copied an old series. I hope they finally do it right this time but I doubt it. Hope I'm wrong.

"name me any Japanese TV or movie with that much success!?"

Pokemon, dragonballz, one piece (on for as long as all star treks combined).

Really? I had no idea any of them were around in the 60s.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Chris Whitmore it is not a contest and I watched Star Trek as a kid on American Armed Forces TV on Okinawa. You knew when a show fell in the season by the size of Shatners gut. Japanese TV has a lot of drama's ans samurai shows. There is a ton of anime besides Pokemon, hundreds of titles. Then there are the horror movies so many of them. A lot of them are available in America and yes they are original. I posted because of all of the hype for the same shows and movies in America. Am sick of Star Wars due to the long lead time. Yes I will get around to watching it but not until it has been out for some time. I just have other things on my mind. I do hope you enjoy your TV show 2 some years in the future :)

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

A lot of them are available in America and yes they are original.

After all the responses here you have not elaborated on the point you made about Americans not doing anything original. Why not?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Simon Foston:

Total of all star trek series episodes: 726 Total episodes of one piece alone: 718 Number of years on (gaps removed): star trek - 15 one piece - 16

Both had books made about them. Both have fanfics.

While one piece alone was not in the 60s, it gained momentum much faster than star trek and, despite its handicap, equalled it in production. Cannot find total sales of merchandise, but I would wager pretty comparable as I haven't seen a star trek action figure since the 80s - and Japanese action figures are more expensive.

As I said, I am not discounting star trek. I love it, especially TNG (one of the few utopian scifis out there).

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

One Piece isn't really my kind of thing. Furthermore it's a very, very different kind of thing from Star Trek - comic strips and cartoons as opposed to live-action TV and film - and thus, I suspect, quite a lot easier to produce a lot of. How many episodes do you think a team of animators can produce in the time it takes a director, actors, writers, set designers, costume designers, prop builders, SFX people, make-up artists, stuntmen and so on to make one episode of Star Trek? Anyway, what about audience share, earnings and cultural impact? If One Piece is still around in 40 years I'll be very interested to see whether it's become as big a part of worldwide pop culture as Star Trek (if I'm still around myself, that is, and can still remember stuff), although I'm personally inclined to doubt it.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@Jumin- this is a response to your information, but it's not really directed at you

Anyway, want to say that you can't really measure the success of something by the amount of episodes or airtime it gets. It could very well be due to Trek's age, but it is much more internationally recognized by even non-fans.

Spock or the Enterprise are about as recognizable as Mickey Mouse.

You might be able to make the argument for Pikachu, but I'm just a little bit too old to have been into Pokemon as a kid so I'm not really sure.
