He played in the Dirty Mac - the band John Lennon put together for the Rolling Stones Rock n Roll Circus. During Yoko Ono’s, er, vocalizing you could see Mr Gitlis bemusedly trying to avoid wincing as he gamely played over her screeching.

You can make a good career by being a session or 'guest' musician. Session players like this guy are never in the limelight as 'superstars' but they're always needed and wanted. When you're so good at what you do, everybody wants you. Leland Skylar the famed bassist who I've seen twice and met once, Fronzi Thornton the famed vocalist I've seen three times doing backup, the famed drummer Manu Katche, the violinist Shankar and this guy. Good musicians may not be in the spotlight but they're always in demand because they're so GOOD. RIP Ivry you violin virtuoso. Play for Yahweh in Heaven now.
