Not to worry, Trump will steal the songs anyways, then he will send his teams of lawyers after you for interfering with the election.
Jeff Huffman
This has always seemed like a pretty obvious copyright/use infringement

"have signed a letter demanding that politicians get their consent before playing their songs at campaign rallies."
To be clear, the artists have signed a letter demanding that President Trump's staff get their consent before playing their songs at campaign rallies. They aren't going to complain if another political campaign uses their songs, lyrics, etc.
Attilathehungry
As long as the artist is paid royalties per agreement, it is hard for them to stop the use of their music. The venues that hold political events are following the law. It isn't an issue of theft, just petulance on the part of the artists.
commanteer
Agreed. Jagger just won't get no satisfaction, but it might be the end of the world for Stipe.

Guess Mick Jagger realized he did not have a legal leg to stand on with that lawsuit. To give a bit of credit to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards they signed over their publishing right to Bitter Sweet Symphony to the Verve guy last year but I don't think the Stones have ever paid the Staple Singers for ripping them off.

@Toshiyori - that’s not correct.
The letter was sent to Democratic and Republican national, congressional and senatorial committees.
Individually artists might not complain if a campaign they like uses their song, but collectively they are demanding that both sides ask permission.

Bruce Springsteen has had this issue for decades. And Stipe gave a very nasty tweet to Trump's camp in 2016.

This should be shot down in court. As long as you get paid royalties, you should not get to decide who gets to play your songs
iraira
Use of a song requires licensing as determined by ASCAP or BMI (Jasrac in Japan). Depending on the agreement with ASCAP, etc., the artist or the licensing group can reject a request for licensing.
I would’ve pasted a direct link to the ASCAP website but it’s under maintenance at this moment.
commanteer
It is pretty obvious that they don't have such a contract. ASCAP is never shy about going after anyone who they even suspect is abusing the copyrights they manage. Jagger and the rest would have no need of the letter they are writing if the Trump campaign was actually violating copyrights, as ASCAP would already be on it. That they aren't suggests he artists don't have a legal leg to stand on. They could try to fight it out in court, but the election will be over long before any decision is reached.

Sad and pathetic state of affairs for the Trump campsign when they actually want to use music by artists that despise them. Cant this train-wreck campaign find any artist that doesnt hate Trump and his low-education supporters? Anyone?
I guess not.

Oh, stop! Trump wasn’t the only President that these liberal musicians had a conniption about and won’t be the last.
I disagree, I think a lot of these liberal artists are just your typical partisan nut jobs. Now they have the right to ask the President or any other President not to play their music, I get it, but they don’t have to be the typical partisan jerks they continue to be. We know most of these people are libs, embrace it, don’t act as if you’re neutral, you’re not.
Toasted Heretic
Refusing to be associated with a pathological racist liar conspiracy theorist and sex offender isn't partisan.
It's common sense.
Attilathehungry
Heretic, that is true, but we aren't talking about the Biden campaign.
Bob Fosse
A stunning lack of understanding. Who is partisan? Who is neutral?
I’m certainly not neutral, I’m anti-stupid and anti-hypocrisy whoever it comes from. That it comes so reliably consistently from the same source is far from a surprise for anyone.
plasticmonkey
Ted Nugent? Kid Rock? Kanye West?
yakyak
Jagger is the same, he is just trying to stay relevant in this pc culture.
Joe Blow
That worked out for him, didn't it?
bass4funk
Not only is it partisan, but it just shows what we always know about most musicians, they can’t see anything past money and politics, but yeah, it’s common sense for these people.
And?
miss_oikawa
Assuming the venues have music licences I don't see how they can be stopped. Of course they'll have to pay royalties, either directly or indirectly, but if you publish something you can't decide who buys it.
commanteer
It's not enough that you state facts here. You must express hatred of Trump if you want upvotes instead of downvotes.
miss_oikawa
Aa, sumimasen. I hate Trump. OK?
Vanessa Carlisle
They have very good moral point here. Unfortunately there are as yet no laws on the books to protect their work in this way. Such laws should be made.
Right now they need to have the right contracts, but its too much to demand that an artist, especially one not yet rich or famous, be able to get one from an established and savvy company they sign on to.
Getting permission from a company but not the artist for use in a movie is one thing, but going over the head of the artist to use their work in politics is a whole other ball park. No artist should ever be made to suffer such an affront.

A venue license doesn’t necessarily cover the use of the music.... but I guess these facts aren’t good enough for some.
Bob Fosse
Jagger has earned his place in culture for many more generations to come, pc or not. I don’t think he has anything to prove here.
If I found a fly in my soup I’d take it out too.
Strangerland
Hah, you just proved yourself wrong - Trump isn't even in the same set of double digits as biden, much less tied.
