Despite several high-profile allegations, the #MeToo movement was less pervasive in Japan than in some other developed countries.

So, past-tense reference to this "movement", does that mean it's over? While many of the goals of the movement need to be implemented here in Japan, the inference in the sentence here is that is was unwanted hence it not becoming prevalent.

Everyting in the description of what she does in her role as an intimacy coordinator seems like something that should have been standard for the industry from a long time ago, making sure the details of the scenes, checking with the actors if they are comfortable with it, preparing clothes and props to facilitate scenes looking more intimate than what they actually are. Seeing how a special position had to be created to make sure this is done helps explaining why so many complains came up recently.

Weren’t a lot of the “intimacy coordinators” in Hollywood recruited from the porn industry? They’re basically doing the same work they were doing on a porn set, making sure the girl is comfortable enough doing a scene only now it’s respectable because it’s not actually sex. Lol.

Intimacy? What about it? Why see intimacy on screen when...........?

"Unlike in the West or South Korea where the #MeToo movement took hold, the Japanese industry wasn't able to change," she said

Like every other aspect of Japan then.

Intimacy coordinators should have been thing since the dawn of the movie industry. They have stunt coordinators so why not intimacy coordinators?

Hopefully the incorporation and acceptance of intimacy coordinators in the Japanese film industry affords actors more autonomy and protection.

Not that these people aren't important - or necessary - but isn't the matter of how far an actor is willing to go for an individual project stipulated in the contract, and the contract signed, before shooting starts?

Beat me to it. Well said.

Yes, why watch intimacy when you can take part in intimacy?
