One of the key reasons why Japanese dramas are largely terrible is the casting; instead of casting candidates who can act and are suited for the role, they cast idols from Johnny-trash boy bands or AKNHBSDFD2394324329 girlies agencies.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Acting ability just doesn't seem to be that important.

Mama mama, I can play in an NHK soap. Pls say thank you to all our crony contacts, my agency and lets not forget to send all the thank you presents.
pleeeeaase have a thought for us, poot tv-versie owners who have just been assured of continued mental torture till end of 2023.
I am zapping already, to stay in the habit

Good to know. Now I don't have to watch it.

The best drama ever was "Hotel"

NHK and other networks, take these historical figures and their accounts then rather than portraying them accurately, make them into modern day personas replete with today's stereotypical mannerisms and dialogue. In addition, they take liberties with the biographical or autobiographical accounts. I watched a little of the NHK drama about Shinichi Suzuki and it was a travesty.

That was good, actually. Certainly one of the better ones.
Actually, if you go back a few decades, the quality of Japanese TV drama improves remarkably. Over the new year hols, I was watching a drama filmed in the 60s or 70s (not an asadora as such, but very similar in format), and the acting was natural and compelling, from the child characters to the oldies, and it didn't feel like a live-action anime. Of course, that was before dramas fell to a business model enslaved to Johnny's et al. and the gorannnnn no sponsaaaaa

Yeah thanks for the warning. I’ll make sure not to watch that.

I believe they're aiming for "multi-platform compatibility," i.e. the ability to perform in bland, formulaic pop groups, appear in bland, formulaic TV dramas, variety shows and commercials, and star in bland, formulaic films based on bland, formulaic manga and anime.
