Indeed. A mainland bootleg version is already out, I know this cuz several copies are listed on eBay. By giving Cape No. 7 a proper theatrical release, it will give the film-makers a chance to make some money.

This film was a big box office hit in Taiwan after everyone had written off the island's once vibrant film industry as dead. The Chinese government is always looking for Chinese-language fare to compete against Hollywood blockbusters. And I don't think it will elicit a nationalistic response from the mainland audience, when you are richer you can let bygones be bygones.

This has got to be about the worst movie I have seen in recently memory. It is that bad! The story has been completely decontextualized from the era it is supposed to hark back to, so affecting presented in Hou Hsiao-hsien's City of Sadness.

I would only recommend it to those who have nostalgia for living in Taiwan, that's what got me through it.
