Make her a gunner on a tank.

Stop being 'Merica centric! These guys are unknown here in Japan, just like she is unknown in the US.

FYI, my comments about these guys would be the same as I wrote about her, regarding the desire for more "fame".

Oh and who in the hell are Jolie, Penn and Stiller? Meaningless names to me!

Angelina Jolie, Sean Penn and Ben Stiller? Never heard of them?!?

Also the Sean Penn article was here on this site the day before this article.

I can understand her compassion, but I also want her to think carefully about her own body.

I didn't see any uproar when Letterman, Jolie, Penn or Stiller went. What makes them OK to go but not her?

When is the last time you saw any articles about these guys doing anything here in Japan?

(BTW I'm no fan of this Indonesian woman and her violent past - but she IS on the right side of history here).

LOL!

Maybe she can donate some of the money she got from her husband that rightly belongs to the people of Indonesia.

That’ll be the day.

Correction: Japanese-Indonesian woman.

Good on her for helping Ukrainians - they are the VICTIMS of fascist Russian aggression, after all. Every little bit of support helps.

Such hypocrites, I didn't see any uproar when Letterman, Jolie, Penn or Stiller went. What makes them OK to go but not her?

This is the person who smashed a woman's face with a wine glass requiring over 30 stitches. She's damaged goods

Well Sean Penn was a woman abuser. I didn't see you mentioning that in yesterday's article through all the comments about his greatness and muscle mass.

3 ( +8 / -5 )

Just another photo opp for her. She doesn't really care about refugees and her involvement with the UNHCR is purely for status and image. This is the person who smashed a woman's face with a wine glass requiring over 30 stitches. She's damaged goods. Guaranteed a film crew accompanied her to Ukraine so no doubt her exploits will appear on TV to further milk her fake benevolence.

Probably helping anyone she can due to the trauma of being 5 years at the end of WWII.

Special life still probably traveling first class every week or so to either France, Switzerland, the USA or Japan.

Prove me wrong.

No one is totally black or white.

She was his third wife

Fifth (of nine).

And US_Reamer is right: Sukarno was no angel, but he did not order the deaths of 1,000,000 compatriots.

That was Suharto, with a LOT of help from the CIA and MI6.

Pathetic....

My opinion here, these "celebrities" who permeate Japanese TV are leeches. Most have one "15 minutes" of fame in their lives, if that, and then they play off of it for the remainder of their lives because there is nothing else they are capable of accomplishing.

We all already know she was a hostess in Tokyo. And we all know why she is rich.

The world and people aren't as black amd white as you seem to think. This is how I met her:

"Activities of "EARTH AID SOCIETY"

Dewi Sukarno established NPO Earth Aid Society in 2005, in the hope that people around the world will be united by strong brotherly love beyond religion, ethnicity, national borders, language and history.

Since then, she has been active as a non-profit organization. She has made donation of 120 tons of polished rice to North Korea through North Korea Red Cross Society, which was transported by herself by train. Further, she visited earthquake victims in Kashmir region to donate 2,556 blankets and 3,500 sets of clothing, through Pakistan Red Crescent Society. Inside Japan, \300,000 was donated to”Stork’s Cradle”, a baby hatch run by Jikei Hospital, and \270,000 to NPO Aiai.

Especially, she wants to devote herself to offering a loving hand to refugees around the world, falling victim to politics, victims of natural disasters, global environmental destruction, and the underprivileged.

During the 10 years she stayed in New York, she worked diligently, as the special advisor to U.N.E.P.(United Nations Environment Programme), to preserve  disappearing ecosystem and rainforest, protect way of life and rights of indigenous people, protect and promote social environment.

Also on the cultural aspect, she serves as the chairperson of a non-profit U.S. corporation, IBLA Foundation which supports musicians. And as one of the founders, she makes diligent effort to train opera singers, concert pianists and others."

Didn't she once glass a woman in a fight at a party and leave her permanently scarred?

Yeah, real classy lady alright!

the government has "recommended Japanese nationals do not travel" to Ukraine

I was under the impression that she isn't actually a Japanese national, having taken Indonesian citizenship when she married.

Anyway, lot of sour grapes about how bad Japanese talents are in the comments today. Not sure why these come up in articles like this where the given talent is doing something that seems completely reasonable to me.

Oh right this is the same woman that lived in luxury while her husband ordered the massacre of a minimum 1 million Indonesians just in the mid 1960s.

Er, no. It's easy to mix up the Sukarnos and Suhartos, but it was SUHARTO (with a little help from his friends in the USA & UK). After the military coup in 1965 Sukarno lost power and was placed under a de facto house arrest. For history buffs with a nose for conspiracies there was a story that Dewi was a yakuza plant to ensnare the Indonesian Lothario enabling Japanese gangster biznessmen with rightwing political ties gain access to the center of power in Jakarta.

its amazing how people can be so oblivious to the real world and their surroundings.

it’s not a tourist attraction, it’s an active war zone, the hell are you thinking?

Politik Kills

Today 08:06 am JST

Good on her. She’s in her 80s and still does all the ridiculous rubbish that is required for tv content here. She is rich, she has the ability and resources, she should do it regardless of J-gov’s feeble protestations. As long as she is doing it for humanitarian reasons and not her own gratification

She is rich because her late husband stole million from the Indonesian people while president, sat living in luxury while her husband ordered the murder of over 1 million people.

If she had any conscience she would return what her husband stole and pay the Indonesian people back.

1 ( +12 / -11 )

Why do I find this nothing but a publicity stunt and the news should ignore it?

Oh right this is the same woman that lived in luxury while her husband ordered the massacre of a minimum 1 million Indonesians just in the mid 1960s.

Yeah true humanitarian.

People should FREE to travel and offer their support to anyone in need of help, she did what many other citizens around the world are doing to help the people of Ukraine during these difficult times. Glad to Japanese citizens participating.

During the 2014 Tokyo governor's election Sukarno shilled for her friend, the now-disgraced far-right, historical revisionist former Chief of Staff of Japan's Air Self-Defense Force Toshio Tamogami. Tamogami lost to the now-disgraced Yōichi Masuzoe, yet still obtained some 600,000 votes. Tamogami was later given a five-year prison sentence for making illegal payments to his campaign staff, suspended of course.

She's an obvious fit for Ukraine's current leadership and their backers in Washington.

Not in the spotlight? She on every other TV variety show in Japan. And her TV persona is just that. I met her in NY years ago, perfectly fluent English very pleasant lady. And she hardly "needs" the money....lol

Not compared to what she was, not even close. She is and was a dictionary definition of a "gold-digger" who got the "guy" based on her looks, and who has been living off of her "reputation" ever since.

So what if she speaks "fluent" English, plenty of people do and it's nothing special.

She hasn't been in the spotlight so much recently and I'll bet it was all just a publicity stunt to make her some money!

Maybe she can get in a photo with Mr. Kishida :)

Japanese TV personality Dewi Sukarno, 82, widow of former Indonesian President Sukarno, has traveled to Ukraine, with Japan's government on Tuesday saying she should not have made the journey to the Eastern European state invaded by Russia.

She was his third wife, and her only claim to fame is marrying this guy after she met him when she was working in a Ginza hostess bar called the "Copacabana", when she was a student. He was 39 years older than her.

that the government has "recommended Japanese nationals do not travel" to Ukraine "for any purpose"

It's only recommendation not actual ban. So don't be so disappointing, she just exercise her travel right and showing her support.

Japan's government on Tuesday saying she should not have made the journey to the Eastern European state

They always say people not to do this and that, however it meaningless.
