Japanese fans react to Netflix live-action 'One Piece' casting

With the premiere of Netflix’s live-action "Cowboy Bebop" just a week away, there’s not a whole lot left for the streaming giant to do in terms of hyping its upcoming adaptation of the beloved sci-fi anime. So instead, it’s hyping its upcoming adaptation of the beloved pirate adventure anime "One Piece."

Originally announced almost two years ago, the Netflix "One Piece" has finally announced its primary cast.

It’s a crew largely made up of relative newcomers for such a high-profile project, with Inaki Godoy as Luffy, Mackenyu (son of legendary Japanese action star Sonny Chiba) as Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Tax Skylar as Sanji.

Given that "One Piece" has been immensely popular in Japan for pretty much all of the 20-plus years the anime and manga have been going for, Japanese Twitter users had a lot to say about the cast reveal, and not all of it was positive.

“Ca-tas-tro-phe.”

“This looks terrible.”

“They should have just gone with the live-action One Piece cast from the Indeed commercial.”

“This has me feeling really worried, but if Oda is giving it his blessing, I’ll trust him.”

“Yeah, and people trusted Toriyama with Dragonball Evolution.”

“Usopp seems like he’s really going to get on my nerves.”

“Mackenyu doesn’t seem like he’s into it at all.”

Not everyone is ready to write the adaptation off just yet, though.

“Right now, this looks feasible. This is just the cast announcement, after all, not how they’re going to look in-character.”

“So many people are treating the cast announcement like it’s an in-costume reveal, but it’s not.”

“I wasn’t sure about the still photo, but in the video, Luffy’s actor really seems like a good fit for the character! He’s cute!”

“Nami looks cute.”

“I give them 120 points out of 100 for the Usopp casting choice.”

Netflix has yet to announce any time frame for the series, so odds are it’ll be a while until fans have in-costume photos, let alone a full episode, to judge the final product by.

It's beyond disaster... It's a abomination...

Every duplicate of Original Japanese has been ruined. Cowboy Behop will be flopped, also because it will be shown on the same day as one of the most anticipated netflix drama this year, 'Hellbound'.

@SindhoorGK

This is why Japan should have had its own equivalent of Netflix - with a global footprint.

Now that Sony Pictures (pretty much an American company in all but name) has taken Crunchyroll and Netflix exclusively making adaptations of anime, they will relentlessly modify the source material for western audiences and ruin it for good. Not that it matters for Netflix or Sony as long as they make their money.

And Japan's anime and manga industry just refuses to adapt to the 21st century. Korea takes this seriously - as seen with Naver expanding their commercialisation of Webtoons and state sponsored K-dramas and K-pop targeted towards western auidences to expand Korea cultural reach.

Japan already has a powerful cultural soft power weapon in anime yet they are just wasting away its global untapped potential.

Your absolutely right and please excuse my invalid comment.

Sorry.

Wait and see.

Japanese cant possibly understand the old wild west cowboy culture of USA anyway.

And shouldn't be using it.

Stop borrowing everything from other cultures and invent something original to Japan.

Dude, what are you talking about? Netflix- a US company- is copying a Japanese show. Netflix Is using a famous poster from the original Japanese show. It is a US company that is borrowing from Japan.

@/justasking

the JApanese version of death note adaptation is atleast a 100 times better than the Hollywood version and Japan has a better track record in making anime adaptations than Hollywood.

At least they are not Japanese actors. We all know if Japanese actors are cast, they will just use the usual anime voices without facial expressions.

That's blatantly false and Mackenyu(Zoro) is a Japanese actor.

Why not wait and see before judging?

Nooo. Don't do it. They're gonna ruin it! Wasn't Death Note enough? One Piece only works for manga and anime.

If the resources for this series is instead used to pay animators or manga artist for a movie highlighting the main characters father, or the battles of his grandpa, or even just some story Shanks or Mihawk, it will be more worth than making an obvious animation to a distorted realism.

Look at the Lion King when they make it realistic CGI, it becomes almost like a National Geographic documentary instead of a dramatic story.

The poster is enough for me to not renew my subscription. My childhood memories is just ruin. As if the whole Cowboy Bebop fiasco isn't bad enough aleady.
