Another great monologue from Jimmy and some deserved wins today. In particular, Blade Runner, Dunkirk and Three Billboards.

If the Oscars ceremony and Hollywood offends so much, the answer is refreshingly simple. Don't watch the awards season and don't watch Hollywood movies.

Given Kimmel's history of misogyny (e.g. his "Man Show", etc), he is the last person to be lecturing ANYONE about the treatment of women.

Where is your trampoline, Jimmy, you loathsome ***.

I'm glad Blade Runner got rewarded. Best visual effects and best cinematography are well deserved.

On the other hand I still don't understand the hype around Dunkirk... For me it was just an OK film, nothing more.

Looking forward to see Three Billboards and Shape of Water.

Gender equality in 2018 should not be a joke, it should be a fact.

3 ( +8 / -5 )

Kimmel is not at all qualified to point fingers.  anyway, for all the hoohaa Weinstein is still not locked up - so all this stuff remains just noise.

3 ( +9 / -6 )

The entire auditorium must be squirming in their seats since they all knew what was happening.

Hypocrites.

3 ( +13 / -10 )

Easy to see the Kimmel bashers are Trump fans. Trump the guy who admitted that he abuses women, what a bunch of hypocrites !

I am NOT a Trump fan, and I cannot stand Kimmel, an arrogant, elitist hypocrite that really isn't funny.

"Oh - why can't they stay away from politics??" /whine/

In case you are unaware, movies have always been political. The only difference is that the politics are shifting and some folks are uncomfortable. Them wimmin just might get to the top. They might have stories to tell. They might be more than T & A to be rescued by the hunk de jour.

Then there's the horrible realization that the world is not white...

The film was good but nowhere the "film of the year" or something. Which is a shame, that awards theater.

What? But how will we accomplish our hatred signalling without attacking Hollywood as a monolithic collective every time an element of pop culture appears in the news? Dammit, people need to know I'm not like the tens of thousands of artists, workers, and laborers in the film industry- they need to know I'm hard at work at my coal-mining job where I also have Internet access and also browse this site for some reason.

You've hit a rich seam there, mate!

But it really is that simple. There's plenty of films out there that don't emanate from the big studios. Ok, they may not have as many car chases and they may require a bit of concentration but you know, at least they're subtle and not too preachy.

I am genuinely curious about those who bemoan the Hollywood machine - why don't they seek out more independent or foreign language films? Esp nowadays when it's so easy to do so...

Didn't watch the event, but I was curious to see which recent movies did well, people's impressions of films/movies they have seen, and their recommendations here in this thread.

Next time on a plane I'll know better what to watch, maybe.

Because it's not about the movies, in'nit. It's about having people that your peer group agrees is okay to hate.

Funny. Do you really see the AFD-loving peanut gallery watching Abbas Kiarostami, Michael Haneke or Wong Kar Wei films? It's not about the films, it's about finding targets for their hate.

@ Bintaro

Looking forward to see Three Billboards and Shape of Water.

You're in for a treat. Both great movies...but I fear the wrong movie won today.

@ Toasted Heretic

For me, it was all about the soundscapes in that movie. Plus, it was Christopher Nolan. If he did a ten hour movie about paint drying, I'd probably watch that!

As great as Nolan obviously is, his decision to rely on practical effects and not employ a limited amount of CGI left everything feeling a little flat. The scale was all wrong and it will be a very long time before we get a movie that actually reflects the momentous size of the operation. The twenty second shot in Darkest Hour - which is frankly no more than a so-so movie -  depicting the flotilla showed much more than Dunkirk did during its entire duration.

It was a typical movie about a woman who falls in love with a beast

Once upon a time, the Little Mermaid married the prince transformed into a frog, in the Happy Days decor. I really like one thing : the green pies. They were phosporescent, they seemed more alive than the other characters... Not Disney's best. Oops. I mean Del Toro's. He's done better, he will do better again. Apparently they had no movie really above others (just different genres). They tried not giving one more doll to people that already got so many.

Doesn’t matter much what Kimmel says because he won’t be on the jury. I think Weinstein might beat the rape rap.

Hollywood are all a bunch of hypocrites - THAT is the reason why people often say they should keep their mouths shut about politics and social justice issues.

Hollywood cherry picks who is to be scorned for their actions and who gets a free pass.

Kimmel's past "performances" on The Man Show by no way gives him any voice to talk about others, but his fellow Hollywood types overlook it.

Why is it not ok for a male actor to make comments about his fellow female actor's bodies or what he'd like to do to them sexually - but there's no outcry when Jennifer Lawrence just recently made a comment about a younger male co-star: “(I'm) buttering him up like a pig for slaughter, and then I'm going to swing right in there as soon as he's, like, 30.”

Stars are lining up to get behind Ryan Seacrest because there is just no way he could have done the things he's accused of. But other actors, oh well, just say he's guilty when someone(s) says the exact same things and find him guilty in the public opinion.

Every single actor and actress sitting in those Oscar seats have all done or said something which was inappropriate toward someone else, tried to do or have done something to impress or sway a film exec to get the upper hand over another competing actor for the same role, etc.

They are all just as guilty as the next.

Have to admit, it was quite cringey to watch

Subscribe to MUBI, and never complain about Hollywood again.

I watched most of the nominated pictures and thought Shape of Water was overrated. It was a typical movie about a woman who falls in love with a beast and I don't like movies that give away the ending at the beginning of the film.

Three Billboards and Call Me By Your Name really left an impact and had me thinking well after the movie finished.

Jimmy Kimmel. Yeah, I know him. He used to host something called "The Man Show" where he would put things down his pants and ask young "women" to reach intones pants and find them. Yes, excellent choice for a moral spokesperson on gender equality and sexual harassment.

It seems they all got the new script / talking points in time for Oscars. What percentage do you reckon are actually bots?

A 'Beauty And the Beast' rewrite. Man, Hollywood has totally run out of originality. Meh.

At least he wasn't getting political. It really damages their image when they alienate their fans. I wonder how low the viewership is.

Nice to see him pick on Harvey instead of Trump for a change. Hollywood has some deep rooted problems. i.e. pizzagate

I used to like watching Kimmel until he started attacking President Trump.
