The aliens are not out there, they are amongst us. Look at the guy next to you.

If there was a far more advanced alien civilization, I think they would do whatever they can to hide themselves. We are pretty dumb for an intelligent life form.

More things like this should be funded by the private sector. If there's not enough interest to pay for it, then they shouldn't tap taxpayers to pay for it.

im sure if we waited long enough, theyd eventually find us.

It would be interesting to fund the military like this.

As for SETI, knowledge of any kind is important. If governments don't want to fund the search for knowledge, then maybe people should bypass the government. The problem is, of course, flying to the moon or finding cancer cures costs more than people are able to pay.

I was an extra in that movie. I was one of the spectators in the congressional hearing after her "contact". If you have the widescreen version of the movie, you can see my forehead sticking up over the crowd in the back-right. I'm famous! ;-)

Even if there wasn't a budgeting issue, SETI has always had to fight against religous fundamentalists who were (and still are) incensed that someone would even DARE to imply that God actually had multiple worlds he was doing "science projects" on. It's seen as a major slap in their face that WE might not be the only ones God has been toying with. Personally, I believe that there are simply too many star systems out there and the odds of there being other systems with just the right conditions for life as we know it are very good.

As for them finding us, if they had the technology for interstellar travel then they're so far ahead of us that they wouldn't want to corrupt "the neanderthals". We'd probably never see them.

Go jodi, but knowing they are out there will do nothing for the earth, will it? The thing is, this sector of space is all your, and the original idea is, to do with as you see fit. Now you can look, but if you should go out there that a another matter, they are a no non-sense people, totally. Before you can venture out where they are, you had better evolved a different counciousness. The earth should be kept as a garden no matter what. With this said, there are advance men and woman right here on earth, they are consider as outsiders, UFO, but they are IFO Identified Flying Object. But they refuse to make contact with the governments, because the prevailing thoughts and thinking is too primitive. And the government of this world know that they are here, since they are so advance, the government deny their existent all together, why? they want to develope superweapons to tackle these people, but these people have super technology already they can reach another galaxy and back in a day. And they can cloak them self from any technology made by the so call modern man. So far, they are so far ahead of man, I cannot even give you a scale for measurement, man is like a bady, and they are like super scientist, that is all I can say. And their mind is far superior than man, because they follow the right course of evolution, man is going backwards, and would have been eradicated if not for some intervention in 1983 around there sometime. See, no one is allowed to interveined in this solar system or any other for that matter. But if what you do, on this planet interfer with another planetary system, only then they are allowed to interviene.

You are heading that way just about now, and guess what they will not sit idley and what a run away planet crash into their solar system, if say a the earth was thrown out of orbit. So, the mess you are in on earth is too far gone, and you will not turn back for nothinng, so, I predict for you in the near future a resolution of cosmic proportion, ready or not. The watcher is here on earth, and he is aware of what is transpiring, and he as prepared a way for those who will survive. The watcher is the creator and the distroyer, and there is a path man should follow if he does not live up to expectation, then he must me removed. No matter what your religon says, it does not matter. As far as I am concerned mankind as failed the test for continuance on this planet, and will be removed, immenently.

EVERYBODY pays for flying to the moon or curing cancer....through taxes

Government takes taxes to pay for things like SETI when they are more than people are WILLING to pay.

Lets face the cold hard truth. Science is based on facts... Religion is based on the acceptance & recruitment of gullible people.

Science - Day-by-day and year-by-year it continues to debunk religious myths one by one. I am convinced in 100 years people will look back at laugh at the lunacy of their gullible ancestors.

Some recent examples please? And please don't say "The world is not flat" and "The Earth revolves around the sun".

Unless you are Fundamental Christian that believes the Earth is 6000 years old and we are direct descendants of Adam and Eve, then you may find that many people who believe in religion also welcome new scientific discoveries. You cannot prove or disprove God's existence through science.

@tokyokawasaki,

Lets face the cold hard truth. Science is based on facts... Religion is based on the acceptance & recruitment of gullible people.

To be fair, science is based on "the scientific prinicple" which involves theories (hypothesis) leading to experiments attempting to prove the theories. If the experiments succeed in proving the theory, THEN it is treated as fact.

So it would probably be more accurate to say that science is the SEARCH for verifiable facts, while religion is the absolute belief in the accuracy of religious texts and no verification is needed or wanted.

religion is the absolute belief in the accuracy of religious texts

Only for fundamentalists. I'd call myself Christian, but recognise that parts of the Bible are fanciful, to put it mildly....
