Depp played too many ganster movies, his warddrobe is starting to look like something out of the 1930s

Depp's not aging well. Anyway, this film won't be popular here, that's for sure.

Minamata disease was first discovered in Minamata city in Kumamoto prefecture, Japan, in 1956. It was caused by the release of methylmercury in the industrial wastewater from the Chisso Corporation's chemical factory, which continued from 1932 to 1968. This highly toxic chemical bioaccumulated in shellfish and fish in Minamata Bay and the Shiranui Sea, which, when eaten by the local populace, resulted in mercury poisoning. While cat, dog, pig, and human deaths continued for 36 years, the government and company did little to prevent the pollution. The animal effects were severe enough in cats that they came to be named as having "dancing cat fever".

On Monday, March 29, 2010, a group of 2,123 uncertified victims reached a settlement with the government of Japan, the Kumamoto Prefectural government, and Chisso Corporation to receive individual lump-sum payments of 2.1 million yen and monthly medical allowances.

Most congenital patients are now in their forties and fifties and their health is deteriorating. Their parents, who are often their only source of care, are into their seventies or eighties or already deceased. Often these patients find themselves tied to their own homes and the care of their family, effectively isolated from the local community.

All for Depp playing this part. He is more than capable. This disaster is one of the early indicators that corporations do not give a fig for regular people. Think about it.

Depp looks like he's channelling Del Boy Trotter.

This role is not weird enough for Depp.

The tragic story of Minamata-byō is sad but still worth to tell, and Johnny Depp will do a tremendous job in the role of Eugene Smith. Johnny is one of my best actors, after Tom Cruise, and will I hope add his usual humor and action to this role.

Masako Owada's maternal grandfather, Yutaka Egashira was involved with Chisso Corporation in a minor way, but enough that the family garnered a lot of negative publicity; her marriage to the Crown Prince went a long way towards redeeming the family name.

More interesting to make a movie about 7 years ago in Tohoku

Of course it won't be popular here, the truth hurts and you know what Japan does when she is challenged.

Too serious a roll for such disreputable actor.

Too serious a roll for such disreputable actor.

Then who? Name us an actor that is clean enough to play the role?

Great that this incredible story is being brought to international attention. I studied this in my Japanese history studies - tragic and hard to believe, but true. A part of history that not many know about.

Tamori would be ideal in the roll!
