K-pop's BTS first all-South Korean act to top U.S. singles charts

Didn't PSY top the charts are not? The chartmakers and media gods keep changing everything, not that the Billboard charts truly represent what Americans really want to hear anymore anyway. The charts got split up into several categories and stopped being relevant around 1990.

Nothing serious about BTS, very "flat" music. Nice but nothing special. Just opposite of rap.

Congrats I guess.  although it is another indicator of how banal popular culture has become.

Why didn't any of the Japanese boy bands of the 80s, 90s, and 2000s make the charts overseas? There were many of them (mainly Johnny's related), and some were very good. Is it that they never tried?

A lot of great artistic talent coming out of South Korea. Congrats!

Searched their video to see what the fuss was all about. Not interested.

Having said that, it's got nothing to do with how they look. So sick and tired of how the west always demand men to be macho and bulky. The New Romantics and singers like Boy George of the early 80s were massive globally and they were quite androgynous. What mattered was their talent.

Demographics. At the last census, there were as many South Korean emirge, most who have come to the U.S. since the 1980s (1.3 million), as there were the total number of Japanese-Americans, the vast majority of who trace their American roots since before WWII. Japanese haven't emigrated anywhere, really, since before WWII.

Anyone who has any background with Japanese community groups in the U.S. can testify to the fact that assimilation is pretty much complete. Most Japanese-Americans don't speak the language and have never been to Japan. This help explains why SMAP was never popular in the U.S. Besides the fact that they were/are horrible.

Not into BTS kind of music but good for them. Congrats. Encouraging news for all asian artists.

im not old but still love songs/music from late 80s and 90s... i still listen to ozaki yutaka. Lol.

A few years ago I saw and met a K-punk band called '57' (pronounced as 'Oh Chill'). The 'K' is for 'Korean' but in their case it mrans 'Kick Ass'! They stunned all of us in the club, and they are wild, innovative and wicked! I mean outstanding. The lady drummer played so fierce she splintered a drumstick right down the middle, tossed it onto the floor and drew out another one and resumed drumming. i have that stick autographed as a souvenir. 57 is one Kick Ass Korean rock'n'roll band.
