K-pop star BTS member Jin to begin military service on Dec 13: report

Jin, the oldest member of the K-pop band BTS, will begin his mandatory military service on Dec 13, South Korean newspaper Aju Business Daily reported on Thursday, citing unnamed military authorities.

Jin, who turns 30 on Dec 4, will be deployed to a unit after receiving five weeks of training at the boot camp, the paper reported.

Spokespeople for BTS' agency, HYBE, and the South Korean Ministry of Defense declined to confirm the report.

In a social media post last week Jin hinted he was headed to a "front-line" position.

After years of uncertainty, the group announced in October it would go on mandatory military service, starting with Jin. The group plans to pursue individual projects and reunite in 2025 after all had served, HYBE said at the time.

All able-bodied men in South Korea between 18 and 28 must serve in the military for 18 to 21 months. Some categories, however, have won exemptions, or served for shorter periods, including Olympics and Asian Games medal winners, and classical musicians and dancers who win top prizes at certain competitions. Some lawmakers had called for BTS to be exempted.

South Korea's defense minister has suggested BTS could still perform overseas while serving in the military.

I doubt that.

SK/NK are still at war officially, so I'm pretty sure an overwhelming majority of SK's army would be considered 'front line', and particularly that Jin would not be experienced enough to serve in an administration role which are the domain of career officers.

BTS in a front-line position? Are you kidding? Not even necessary , and even less necessary in person. Leave those little boys alone, they are surely not made for such kind of hard men’s work in the military. A CD player , an amplifier and some big speakers will do better. Not a single enemy will stand it for more than 30 minutes. Not at the inner-Korean border, not anywhere else. Give that a test try at the Ukrainian front and you’ll see how fine it will work and ends that acute war there immediately too.

I don’t know about being in the armed forces or what types succeed. I had a classmate who wasn’t a particularly ‘hard’ type physically and wasn’t a big lad. He joined the army. He was pretty mentally balanced and not prone to hysterics or anything like that.

Maybe it’s more a mental thing. Just an idea.

Anyone with armed forces experience here? Starpunk is good on these topics.

Saddest thing is that they might shave off all three beautigul hair. It's an outdated custom that is sexist since women don't have to shave their hair for boot camp.

This poor man earnt so much money for Korea, and did not benefit anywhere close to how he should have done personally. Now he is 30 and used up they are just throwing him out to the wolves. It is sad. He should be exempt and allowed to go live his life.

Good for him.

The ROK soldiers I trained with are some of the best in the world.

It was well-known Jin would be heading into the military for months, so glad the hype is over with.
