Kankuro Nakamura named 'Father of the Year'

Kabuki actor Kankuro Nakamura, 30, son of Kanzaburo Nakamura, has been named "Father of the Year."

Kankuro was given the 31st annual "Father of the Year" award on Wednesday night, ahead of Father's Day this Sunday. The award was also given to Kankuro's father Kanzaburo before him in 1990. "Your family name has a touch of destiny about it," the award show's operators told Nakamura.

Nakamura, now a famous and well-loved kabuki actor in his own right, belongs to an acting line that goes back for generations. He is married with one son. Dynastic families are still celebrated in Japan, especially in the kabuki world.

What did he do to warrant this award? Come home before midnight? Hug his kids once in a while?

I've seen a few guys in the past that have been voted best this and that.... unfortunately much of it was just an act and later in life their true colors came out. Hey... I hope he's the "real deal", but being the cynic that I am I'd put money that within 10 to 15 years this guy gets arrested for something.

Some of my neighbors should win, they work hard but always manage to escape work for an hour or two to come to a school event, participate in, plan and organize community events and are a good influence on other kids in the community. These normal men are the real heroes. Some of my other neighbors seem to hide in their homes when not at work and never even come out to help with recycling. They like to send their kids community festivals but still will not even come out to hold a lantern to block traffic during obon so their kid doesn't get hit by a car.

Was there a competion in which judges were required to assess entrants fathering skills? What a ridiculous award!

I would feel embarrassed and refuse to accept this shallow award.

There are 100's if not 1000's of single fathers out there who work and bring up their children on their own. Any decent single parent doing their best to raise their family will always get my respect. Of course there are also many great fathers who are not single parents (but you get what i mean?)

This guy is vain to accept knowing that he is nowhere near "Father of the Year' status. Just another typical shallow Japanese award so celebrities can pat each other on the back...

“Father of the Year” award = meaningless

What are you talking about? He's got to do his best to raise his one son to be the next generation kabuki kid down the line. This means teach him how to apply his make-up, cross-dress and all that jazz.

Meaningless award.

So do we get details on why this guy is such a great dad??? Kabuki families are known to have dads that are never around due to the demands of "preforming". I highly doubt this guy is half the dad that some others out there are. Why do the genojin get such awards when clearly, their are others out there who deserve the awards more?

I nominate Naoto Kan as father of the year. Dude, you really rock.
