KARA to appear on Music Station

Korean all-girl group KARA, who are very popular in Japan, will appear on Asahi TV's long-running Music Station television show for two weeks in a row beginning June 17. The show was suspended briefly following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. The group had been in Japan on March 11, recording scenes for a drama series, and they were originally scheduled to appear on Music Station on March 18.

The girls returned to Korea but vowed not to forget about their Japanese fans.

Proceeds from their third single, “Jet Coaster Love,” were donated to disaster aid, and group members left personal messages of encouragement for the people of Japan on their official website. An agent for the group said, “KARA was very worried about those in Japan following the disaster. They're very excited about coming back.”

KARA will also be promoting their new CD "Go Go Summer!" which goes on sale June 29.

Wow - these are some comely lasses! Just look at those thighs....ohhhh Mama! You can keep your AKB48s - I'll take these thank-you very much!

Music recording studios years ago admitted you can have the best singing voice, etc but they won't hire you unless you got " the Look".

Maybe in the 80's when people were buying music... case and point Susan Boil, Pall Pots... heck even Misha in Japan isn't anything to look at.

On the other foot these groups don't have musical talent, you can't classify idol groups such as Kara or any other group like AKB48 as singers or musicians because they have all their songs written for them and all they do is "perform" them, once they hit 24ish, they "graduate" which is code for "get out your too old and not making money for us anymore".

Idols are idols the world over. Nice eye candy, but that's about it.

Really that different from overseas? Music recording studios years ago admitted you can have the best singing voice, etc but they won't hire you unless you got " the Look".

Idols are idols the world over. Nice eye candy, but that's about it. Those with more substance to them don't have to resort to putting their good looks as their selling point.

Back to topic... as far as music goes, Kara does not appeal to me. They aren't much different than their rival groups... all heavily manufactured to look and sound very similar to each other.

I totally agree. I tried watching a bit of KARA on TV, but couldn't stand it. Really fake. But I guess they won't end up doing drugs or end up in jail, like some other pop idols in the world end up doing.

the history of Kara is wrought with saddness back in 2009 one of the singers Jang Jayeon committed suicide because she mentioned in a letter that her managers and the Korean entertainment industry sexually abused her for many years. She was scarred to death to tell anyone so in a letter before her death she mentioned all the abuse she went through from the hands of these perverts. >

Jang Ja Yeon was not a part of Kara... not sure where you got that from. She was a model/actress, and was mostly known for a minor role in the Korean drama version of Hana Yori Dango (in Korean, "꽃보다 남자 "), which was still on air at the time of her death.

Korean girl groups like Kara and SNSD aka Girls Generation are very popular here in Japan and they are quite attractive not like those Jpop groups I like to listen to...they also have quite a large following and have appeared in many live concerts here in Japan, the history of Kara is wrought with saddness back in 2009 one of the singers Jang Jayeon committed suicide because she mentioned in a letter that her managers and the Korean entertainment industry sexually abused her for many years. @bass4funk Agreed. Groups are getting bigger and bigger while population is getting smaller. Wish it was back to the 2 - 4 members again

Thanks for the grammar lesson, now can we get back on topic please. These girls are really cute, but as with most of these talents, that's all they are and that's all they will ever be, TALENTS. Funny, why does it seem like these bands are getting larger. It used to be the norm to have 2 to 4 singers in a group, now the number is what....20 and up????

I don't know about it being a verb

I do, and it isn't. Granted Japanese grammar isn't English grammar; it can use verbs as adjectives (in English we need a relative clause) and sticks the conditional voice inside the verb where we are happy in English to rely on if, but no way can から be a verb. Japanese does have its conjunctions and this is one of them, it joins two clauses or sentences like が、けれども or ので.

If you're still not convinced, ask yourself this; if からis a verb, how do you form its past tense? Or the negative form?

As for these little girls who sing and dance and wiggle their bottoms - they leave me cold. Cute they may be, but their music doesn't do it for me. I can't tell one pretty little face from another. Training little girls up to be idols is apparently big business in South Korea.

Once and for all Kara is Greek, χαρά read 'kara' in classical Greek and it means joy. Considering there are no 'r's in neither Korean or Japanese, it could also be the Greek word 'καλά' pronounced 'kala' which means good. The group interpreted it to mean "sweet melody". It has nothing to do with Japanese.

@Pukey2

@Novenacham: Fadamour my friend, Kara as a verb means "because", in Japanese. から is a verb????!!!!!

I don't know about it being a verb, but から does also mean "because" similar to how ので does. Japan considers some things to be certain parts of speech that we don't (like how half the colors are adjectives, but the other half are "adjectival nouns", while we consider all colors to be adjectives) so "because" could very well be a verb. We consider "because" to be a conjunction. Maybe Japan decided against creating a "conjunction" part of speech.

lol @ people saying how these girls are great singers. goo hara was recently voted as one of the worst singers in korea by a korean newspaper. and isnt this the group where the leader refers to herself and asks others to call her 'goddess'? shes very pretty, but a goddess? not yet, sweetheart.

I look forward to the interview because they often try hard to speak some Japanese. In fact, one of them (スーヨン?) has actually has quite decent Japanese skills.

They have good rhythm, good moves, passable singing, great looks, and are adult women. Superior to their Japanese counterparts in virtually every respect.

@smith Still pretending to be anything to hide your nationality. Man, you talk too much. Are you talking about 'talent' and you are making a relation between a South Korean group and 'TALENT'. Sorry for telling but as I wrote before, there is NOT any TALENT in a group of girls pretending to be westerns with their music, sorry, especially if we take the type of music into account. Again, as I said before, if I want to listen European or American music I buy European or American music, NOT music from South Korean groups with mere copies of Europeans or American songs or styles. If I want Asian music I go to China, Taiwan or Japan, but not South Korea. Sorry if it hurts. Accept the reality. BYE

Let me clarify and set the record straight. Fadamour my friend, Kara as a verb means "because", in Japanese. But as a noun it means "emptiness". The same Kanji can also be read sora, in which case it means, the sky. When the group chose the name, I'm sure that they wanted to choose Kara with a better meaning than just a verb which is quite boring and meaningless. After much research, the following is the result: Origin: Ireland and it means sweet melody, Now that's what the group chose. The alternate origin is English, Greek, Italian, Danish. Many countries have different meanings for this word Kara. Let me add, meaning - Variant of Katherine and gender female. Note in India, Kara is a steel bangle traditionally worn by Sikhs as a symbol of their religious and cultural loyalty symbolizing unity with God. This band was originally worn as a wristguard by swordmen. There is even a spiritual side to it. Anyways I like the name Kara and feel that was a good choice.

Kara is good, check out T-ara , in my opinion even sexier !!

no, yes, yes, no, no

I think Smithinjapan posted based on the part of the sentence that said, "... Kara is a Greek word meaning joy, but...

The post in general is not negative, so maybe he felt the "but" was setting up a negative contrast.

That said, I think Novenachama was wrong. "Kara" is a Japanese word meaning "from (this time or position)" but the Greeks interpret it as "joy". ;-p

I enjoy the beat and the lyrics of their songs. Perhaps they will inject some change to jpop. Not necessarily the skimpy outfits but the upbeat and catchy tunes.

Why cant all women dress like that, especially the nerdy good girls that are hot if they try...

More of that hip dancing. ;)

Legs legs legs... my head is spinning

KARA are a great band. Their music is very fresh, the girls are very cute and they all have great legs. Respect them for donating the proceeds from Jet Coaster Love. Japan needs talented singers like them.

wow some serious news for once

Nice legs.

I love the videos these girls make. Did anyone see that one where they wiggled their bums all the way through? Lovely.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@CaptainAwesome Of course, smith is gonna be defensive. Kara is a Korean group, and he's gonna defend against anything that even remotely sounds like a knock on anything Korean. It's an intrinsic inferiority complex that Koreans or wannabe Koreans have that forbids any criticism of their country, culture and anything related to it, especially when compared to their old colonial master Japan. It's a pretty common behavior amongst them, though.

....and so goes the circus.....

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@smithinjapan ummmmm I don't think novenachama said anything about the groups name being bad, nor did they imply it. A bit defensive aren't we? Me thinks someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Pretty legs. I respect that. I love their songs. Very different feel than Japanese jpop groups.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

kara ies nice. lots of girl kpop groups are nice. but the girls all look the same in the end. But prefer feminine looking kara anyday over girlish akb48, even their music.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Hmm their reappearance on Music Station, as a friend reminded me, could mean more oshiri furi furi, ne ? (depending on the rhythm of their new single I suppose)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

fake pop groups

Why are they fake again? They sing the songs, they dance, they entertain. Just like pop groups have always done.

I quite like Kara, very happy music.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Novenachama: So, 'kara' means "joy" in Greek, and therefore this group's name is bad? Dude, if that's the case EVERY J-pop band that uses English in their name is nuts. For that matter, since 'oke' can be interpreted as meaning 'okay', does "karaoke" mean, 'joy okay!'? Let's not get into names that use foreign loan words, shall we?

You're right, though, K-pop stars are more shapely and more talented than their J-pop star counterparts.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The word Kara is a Greek word meaning joy, but this group interprets it as sweet melody. They have a pretty, but natural look and a similarity to the group Fin K.L.. Kara's been halied as the first foreign female artist to top the Orion's compostie DVD Chart and the first female group in 30 years to rank #1 in the charts all together. Maybe many guys that listen or probably watch them would go crazy and have a stroke and faint and sent to the hospital. Just a joke. I wish Kara lots of success and good luck and enjoy. Go cash in on the fame while you're young and invest your fortune wisely.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The women recruited for "built to order" S. Korean fake pop groups all seem to be more shapely (i.e. not borderline anorexic-looking) compared to the Japanese "built to order" fake pop groups.
