Kennedy Center honors gala returns, with Biden in the house

Stevie Wonder headlined a star-studded gala Sunday saluting Motown founder Berry Gordy, folk legend Joni Mitchell and other recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors, one of America's highest arts awards -- with the president back in the audience.

I love Stevie Wonder, and good for Barry Gordy, but should Biden be attending this event?

Sure, why not. Presidents are also heads of state. They are traditionally entrusted with setting a cultural and moral tenor for the country. Trump did it by attending NASCAR, offering McDonald’s to a sports team, and cooking up the idea for a “National Garden of American Heroes”. I think Biden is well entitled to an evening of real culture.

As stated previously, in differing lingo, deemed irrelevant: there is something unsettling about Kennedy Center honors. It is as if being compelled to perform on command for the aristocracy. Many of the artists being celebrated seem to neglect the roots of their art by the matter of appearance and sitting in the royal box.

One might recall Marian Anderson, banned from performing at Constitutional Hall and any White high school in the nation's capitol aka Washington DC. Now, a clamor for all to set aside the past, ignore such and perform for the masters of the body politic and a gaggle of rich, privileged and entitled folk.
