'Kohaku' draws 42.2% audience rating in Kanto

NHK's popular New Year's Eve program “Kohaku Uta Gassen” (Red and White Song Contest) drew a high rating of 42.2% in the Kanto region, a video research company said Friday.

The 4 1/2 program, which featured 51 acts, drew an average 35.1% for its first half and 42.2% for the second half. Viewership was slightly down from 2013's high of 44.5%, Video Research Ltd said.

Though it has lost some of its appeal in recent years, "Kohaku" is still considered the most prestigious TV music program to be invited to appear on.

The highest-rated program in Japan in 2014 was Japan's soccer World Cup game against Cote d'Ivoire on June 15, which drew an audience of 46.6%.

I was dying when the guy from Golden Bomba was running with sheep while wearing sheep skin underwear. I bet NHK got a few complaints after that.

The should combine Kohaku with the programme running at the same time where the guys get whacked on the bum if they laugh. In the new hybrid if they are duds - whack!!! Start with Arashi.

It was pretty much Ho-Hum in my book-after watching AKB,THK,ACB & UFT 48's coming from all sides one can only figure NHK must have paid a fortune for the Porta-Potty's! It was interesting to see Akina Nakamori & Dissapointing not to see more Enka especially Kitajima Saburo san, THE KING OF ENKA!!!Bwaahhawww!!

Sir Derek of trotter once said to his younger brother "televison is for wimps Jodders" and i agree with him entirely.

Seiko Matsuda's rendition of Anata ni Aitakute was not the best she's ever done, but holy cow, she sure got emotional during the song and afterwards!

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu was good, but last year's performance was better when she appeared sitting on the shoulders of this huge dude...

I can't believe 53.4% of TV viewers were watching something else during that soccer game, every Japanese person I know said they watched it.

Lacking of better programs on other channels is certainly the reason, the JP TV is so depressive here....also if they continue to put on the opening the "i want to give you my melon juice" type of song I am not quite sure they'll continue to be so...prestigious ^^

I was very disappointed by this year's Kouhaku for many of the reasons already mentioned. A complete lack of enka. The few enka performances there were had been destroyed by mascots and other distractions. That blue lipped animated sperm like character that I am still trying to figure out. Kyary's performance was very sub-par for her. The surprise by Akina Nakamori lifted my spirit and I did enjoy the live hookup with Southern All Stars and the appearance by Nippon Elekitel Rengo.

With all of that 48 running around all over the place, akagumi was doomed for failure this year.

I want my enka back!!!

"Sabu-chan", retired from the business after the Kohaku last year if I remember correctly. I remember all the "buzz" during last year's show. (i.e., Kitajima Saburo)
