Kumi Koda announces pregnancy to fans during performance

Pop star Kumi Koda, 29, has announced to fans that she is eight weeks pregnant.

Koda surprised media last Tuesday by announcing her upcoming marriage to KENJI03, 27, lead vocalist and rhythm guitar player for the rock band BACK-ON. The couple sent a fax to media outlets, saying they would register their marriage at the ward office before the end of the year.

There was considerable media speculation that Koda might be pregnant. The songstress revealed the news to fans while performing in a bikini, among other revealing outfits, at an event in Tokyo on Friday night to publicize her new single "Love Me Back." At the event she excitedly told fans in attendance, "I've got a baby in me!"

the prophets on JT proved wight again. but this was an easy one :) "while performing in a bikini, among other revealing outfits" I think I'll start broadening my "musical" tastes

"I've got a baby in me" I'm really curios how did that sounded in Japanese

Thanks, Mod, I thought the English was a bit strange. But the Japanese is usual

I do not think she read the article here about birth control.

But babies are cute. Enjoy them while cannot argue with you. :-)

So now will she have to retire? Seems a bit common in JP when an artist gets married or pregnant. Specially if she is an idol. Is she considered an idol?

Dec 13th, JapanToday : "Koda said that she isn’t pregnant, and that she will continue her work."

Wow another example of knocked up and now take resposibility wedding that will only last I bet only 1 or 2 years. Japan wake up and take a pill!

Okay, which JT lister called it? Someone said she was going to announce her pregnancy. Amazing! Well, hope the baby comes out healthy.

so much BS here I don't know where to start. First, she lies about being pregnant and a week later does a 180. Now she preggers and will become a poster child for all the boneheads out there who want the attention seeking pregnancy with absolutely no plan what to do with a kid after the attention dies down.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Ah, well... that explains the marriage.

"The couple sent a fax to media outlets..."

In the era of Twitter and F8 status updates, not to mention email, some people still use faxes, faxes. Wow!

4 ( +5 / -1 )

hahahahha just last week said she was NOT pregnant... some JT poster totally called this!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Did anyone actually think she didn't know she was pregnant when she announced her marriage? Anyone with a couple of brain cells called it correctly.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

She's not getting a penny out of me until I see the DNA results.

The predictability of the lives of so many in the entertainment world in Japan is pretty sad in many respects. Wonder when the subsequent divorce, move to America (or some other western country) to find herself, return to Japan and start of her child's career as a geinojin will begin?

She said: おなかに赤ちゃんができましたー!..and JT moderator can you confirm that she said this last week as well..because I think she didnt say she WASN'T pregnant...say it isnt so,JT !!

That's what I said after my third bonenkai.

Maybe she found out after she announced the wedding...

Yeah, and maybe pigs fly... ;-)

“I’ve got a baby in me!” ...I guess she never saw the "Aliens" movie series.

theproDEC. 13, 2011 - 03:29PM JST She says she isn't pregnant, but in 4 months she will announce she is 6 months pregnant

Heh! DING DING DING DING. You win. ^^

When these announcements happen, the song Shotgun Wedding by Roy C should be playing in the background.

It is possible she did not lie. We on the outside will never know for sure.

But if she did lie? Well good for her! She owes us nothing. Its not our business.

And getting married because of a baby on the way? Is there a better reason to go from dating to marriage? And who is to say they did not already have a prior agreement to wed if she got pregnant? Is there any better form of engagement? I wish them luck and I hope they raise a wonderful child together.

I am just glad she got pregnant before her womb got dirty! LOL!

That was quicker than I expected

Is this really common Japanese? I mean, why adding "おなかに" when "赤ちゃんができました"would suffice since it's obvious that a baby always starts in the belly?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

It is at least not uncommon Japanese. From the photo it seems that Kouda was holding her abdomen as she said it and perhaps added the "okana" to add to physical reality of it all. Another possibility is that "Onaka" usually means stomach, and while it is does in fact mean a non specific abdominal location, the use of a word may draw attention away from the dreaded womb, which is as taboo in Japan as male sex organs are in Western culture. I.e. It may be that the use of "onaka" euphamises (?) cutifies the truth. And Kouda is queen of sexy cute.

Oh wow! Imagine! A "famous" Japanese girl getting married because she's up the duff!!

Didn't she state just last week that she wasn't preggo? Why not hold off and announce that she too is like 50% of those who get married these days - shotgun wedding!!

Congratulations! A young woman pregnant, I think is beautiful. And her wording sounds like a new Mum-beautiful!

majimekun:

" Is this really common Japanese? I mean, why adding "おなかに" when "赤ちゃんができました"would suffice since it's obvious that a baby always starts in the belly? "

It is not strange in Japanese.

Surely 'I am pregnant!' or even, 'I have a baby in my tummy' are the most appropriate translations... If a phrase isn't used naturally in the language (ever heard someone say ' I have a baby in me!'??) you are translating it into, the norm is to use one that is common.

Congratulations to Kumi and partner!

With all due respect but performing in a bikini when you are pregnant, I find that a bit over the top.

Foxie - As long as she didn't come out of her top, it's OK!

This girl is annoying, she copied Beyonce.

Beyonce did this awhile back at an award show.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Japanese women usually use condoms so planned. They are very detailed and plan.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

She may have a baby in her but she surely doesn't have a brain in her head. Life sure is unfair though. Couples try hard to have children and are unable to yet talentless morons like this can pop out kids at any time. Oh well, she'll be sure to milk her kid and her new "mother" image for all it's worth.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Someone called it last week on these boards. Kudos.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So according to my wife the guy is the ex-boyfriend of her younger sister. Hilarious. She's getting bashed by Japanese on Yahoo comments more than on JT!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

really bicultural? that adds a new dimension to the term "sao shimai" (sorry mods, a bit of Jp slang is educational)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I thought so she's pregnant...or purposely got herself pregnant. J women likes to get married and have babies before crossing to age 30s....

0 ( +1 / -1 )

She'll be a fun mom, that's for sure!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

this girl such annoying i dont know why others paying attentions with her.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I hope the baby looks like Nakai of SMAP.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"I hope the baby looks like Nakai"

So you hope a scandal breaks! Naughty, naughty boy!

Congratulations to Kumi & whoever the father is, ha ha, it's probably Kenji03.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Nakai was her- ex lover wasn't he? I was only kidding.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The wording is quite common in Japan. Those maternity badges we see commuting ladies wearing on their bag to show they are pregnant say "onaka ni akachan ga imasu" as I recall. Maybe "There's a baby in my tummy" is a slightly better translation? (even though Kumi Koda used the word "dekimashita").

0 ( +0 / -0 )

LOL, one week ago she wasn't pregnant. Usually around 5-6 weeks you notice something's funny, so I'm calling BS on the "she didn't know" excuse. And standard practice is to wait until the 2nd trimester to announce it to the public. Well, anyway, good for her still performing in the 1st trimester....must be hard.
