with security stepped up in Washington against threats by extremist supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump

Given the imbalance in violence between BLM/antifa and The Proud Boys, I bet there will be less violence than at the 2017 inauguration (which, like the riots in summer, seems to have to been forgotten about): https://youtu.be/SCu2gxVZ4E8

will honor inaugural traditions while safely allowing more Americans than ever before to participate from their own homes."

Mark my words, nobody will care about this inauguration and instead be focused on Trump's whereabouts. Then all talk the next day will be about Trump on social media. Trump=ratings=more money

Is Jennifer gonna teach Joe how to pole dance, like in her movie I recently tried watching?

Yeah, because hardly nobody would want to show up even without Covid.

Given the imbalance in violence between BLM/antifa and The Proud Boys,

True, but we should note that the Proud Boys as a group were not at the Capitol on Jan 6, perhaps one person went to film the event.

Trump -- who on Wednesday became the first president to be impeached for a second time for inciting the Capitol "insurrection"

Yeah, he incited an "insurrection" when he said:

“I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.”

Anyway, on the one hand, it might be a good thing to have an impeachment trial. It will give them another opportunity to discuss what happened on Nov 3rd.

Yeah, because hardly nobody would want to show up even without Covid.

This is pure conjecture.

Still... anecdotally, I do know Americans who wanted to attend before the flight restrictions, lockdowns and general upheavals.

False.

Cherrypicking is great fun, innit.

Here's what else he said:

they rigged an election. They rigged it like they’ve never rigged an election before... All of us here today do not want to see our election victory stolen by emboldened radical left Democrats, which is what they’re doing and stolen by the fake news media. That’s what they’ve done and what they’re doing. We will never give up. We will never concede, it doesn’t happen. You don’t concede when there’s theft involved... Our country has had enough. We will not take it any more and that’s what this is all about. To use a favourite term that all of you people really came up with, we will stop the steal...We will not let them silence your voices. We’re not going to let it happen. Not going to let it happen.

Crowd: Fight for Trump! Fight for Trump! Fight for Trump!

Thank you. I’d love to have, if those tens of thousands of people would be allowed, the military, the secret service, and we want to thank you, and the police law enforcement. Great. You’re doing a great job, but I’d love it if they could be allowed to come up here with us. Is that possible? Can you just let them come up, please? .. There’s so many weak Republicans. We have great ones, Jim Jordan, and some of these guys. They’re out there fighting the House. Guys are fighting, but it’s incredible... Our media is not free. It’s not fair. It suppresses thought. It suppresses speech, and it’s become the enemy of the people. It’s become the enemy of the people. It’s the biggest problem we have in this country...We’re going to have to fight much harder and Mike Pence is going to have to come through for us. If he doesn’t, that will be a sad day for our country

we’re going to walk down and I’ll be there with you. We’re going to walk down. We’re going to walk down any one you want, but I think right here. We’re going walk down to the Capitol, and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators, and congressmen and women. We’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them because you’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong...And now we’re out here fighting... But it used to be that they’d argue with me, I’d fight. So I’d fight, they’d fight. I’d fight, they’d fight. Boop-boop. You’d believe me, you’d believe them. Somebody comes out. They had their point of view, I had my point of view. But you’d have an argument. Now what they do is they go silent. It’s called suppression. And that’s what happens in a communist country... it almost seems that they’re all going out of their way to hurt all of us, and to hurt our country. To hurt our country...These people are crooked. They’re 100 percent in my opinion, one of the most corrupt... we can’t let this stuff happen... I’m calling on Congress and the state legislatures to quickly pass sweeping election reforms, and you better do it before we have no country left. Today is not the end. It’s just the beginning... Looking out at all the amazing patriots here today, I have never been more confident in our nation’s future.

And we fight. We fight like Hell and if you don’t fight like Hell, you’re not going to have a country any more.

Apologies for the length. I've reduced the text to the more inflammatory lies and exhortations to get the crowd primed for action. But if folks can't see what's going on in his speech, they really need to pay attention to historical demagogues and rabble rousers.

Lady Gaga, a woman who is openly anti-social, will sing the national anthem?

Not interested.

What does openly anti-social mean in this context?

Would it be, perhaps, her vocal support for LGBT people?

Tom Hanks, a good actor will be hosting. As for the music, couldn't they have picked better? Lady Radio Gaga goes out of her way to make offensive videos and actions and musical constructs posing as songs. J-Lo has sex and flex appeal, that's all. Jon Bon Jovi is the only performer here worth the bother.

Look at it this way, there won't be any diaper-stinking temper-tantrum 'innauguration speech' like the hateful screed Trashtrump did. That's a plus.

Remember her juvenile actions at the baseball game, her disgusting videos and then see. She loves controversy.

Ok boomer.

Just kidding! I respect your political stance, but your taste in music sometimes feels so conservative. Gaga is just following in the fine tradition of rock and roll rebellion (even if it is corporate these days). If you think she's disgusting and/or courts controversy... well, so have a zillion other artists/pop stars over the years. Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop, The Doors, Beastie Boys, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Pulp, The Pogues, Sinead O'Connor, David Bowie etc etc

And Jon Bon Jovi should be sentenced to mandatory music appreciation lessons for his crimes against Fairytale of New York.

That cover hurt more Irish people than any resurgent nativism (under Trump) could ;-)

6 ( +9 / -3 )

As a Biden supporter I think a more conservative agenda would be better. Biden won because of middle class voters in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Florida. Now is a time for healing after the Trump debacle, not a time to pivot back to Hollywood.

Geez, give the music snobbery a rest here. It’s an inauguration performance, not a time to sneer at music you don’t regard as worthy.

Irk the Purists by Half Man Half Biscuit springs to mind.

The most important thing about Inauguration Day is that everyone is safe, observes safety protocols, and doesn't try to overthrow 46 for the lolz.

And then have a beer. You've earned it, America.

Absolute masterpiece. Skewers the snobs brilliantly.

I happen to like all those acts you mentioned in this list. Yet there's a line between breaking boundaries, pushing envelopes and being just plain bland and/or stupid. I even saw and met a Sex Pistol in 2014. Yet it's the music that counts the most. And Gaga and Timberlake just ain't got it. J-Lo will be something to look at but that's about all.

The Rolling Stones are ugly as sin, and Sir Mick Jagger is cocky (but we love him anyway!). They've done some stupid things, and Mick is a disgustin Lothario, a cheat. Yet their music is what counts the most and they know it. They're still rolling, still selling out stadium tours because of their innovative influential music. Yeah, Mick struts his butt on stage but its the solid rock'n'roll and I like it, like it, yes I do.

Indeed, a masterpiece. No place for snobbery, in music or elsewhere. Lopez and Gaga are not my cup of tea, but you don’t have to listen.

The history of popular music is awash with stupid. But sometimes, stupid is entertainment.

Now, for clever, and actually making a worthwhile statement, check out Dave and his performance of "Black" at the Brits awards last year.

A more powerful performance I have not seen in quite some time.

In college I took a roadtrip from San Francisco to the tip of the Baja Peninsula in Mexico with my friend in a small pickup truck over 4-5 days. The only music we had was Rolling Stones CDs. Great songs to carry you over the long haul. I always remember that you can't always get what you want but if you try sometimes you just might find that you get what you need. And Biden got what he needed to win!

I wonder if the ~80M "voters" will watch, even virtually?

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

I wonder if the ~80M "voters" will watch, even virtually?

Why "voters"? Is this an obscure reference to the election being stolen?

In answer to your question, I imagine there will be an audience.

I, though not American, always tune in for the inaugurations. Doesn't everyone, even if only to dip in and see the spectacle, regardless of the PotUS?

0 ( +8 / -8 )

I wonder if the ~80M "voters" will watch, even virtually?

No they will be rioting.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

Biden is doing his best to be politically correct. He probably can’t stand either of them.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

As a Biden supporter I think a more conservative agenda would be better. Biden won because of middle class voters in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Florida.

Now this is a very good narrative..much better than the very obvious this didn't happen narrative.. but again both are narratives.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

and who..really cares?

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

They should’ve asked Bette Midler to sing the anthem, the ex-president would’ve really enjoyed that.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

and who..really cares?

The many millions of people who will be watching the show. So many millions, the bigliest inauguration ever. Like you wouldn’t believe. People tell me they are so excited about it, all kinds of people. Believe me, it’ll be the best ever.

I know someone who cares about ratings and inauguration numbers very very much. He’ll be watching it, guaranteed.

When did they start having hosts and musical guests at Presidential inaugurations? This is the first time I'm hearing about it.

At every inauguration in modern history.

2016 was notable for the most famous performer being someone most people shrugged and said “who?” Mainly because all the big names declined.

Every other inauguration has had the some of the most famous performers in the world at that time in history, since Mickey Rooney in 1941.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

@Bob Fosse

Thanks. Guess I've only seen the important bits.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

What horrible entertainment.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

The inauguration itself is the greatest entertainment, a man who will restore some of our national pride in the eyes of the world will be taking the helm.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Biden won because of middle class voters in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Florida.

And do you honestly think that the 'middle class voters' of these states didn't grow up listening to Bon Jovi if they're from the 80s, or J-Lo and Justin Timberlake in the millenium? Even Gaga's debut was 12 years ago, someone who was a first time voter when she debuted would now be north of 30, most likely with kids.

They are representatives of what the 'middle class' listens and listened to. If anything, they're all a bit dated, bland, and getting into fuddy-duddy range, pop culture wise. We're not talking about Biden having Post Malone or Megan Thee Stallion up there.

You have a point. J-Lo's music and movies totally suck BUT she is a Latina and since TraitorTrashTrump is such a racist sassymouth brat- he refers to Hispanics as 'animals' who 'invade' our country 'bringing drugs, rape and suck up the welfare', this would be a total SLAP onto his ugly fascist disgraceful face. POW!!!

Donald Trump is a disgusting Unamerican Antichrist p.o.s.
