RIP Dr. John
Here's one of my favorite videos with Professor Longhair, Allen Toussaint, Earl King (RIP each) and NOLA legends the Meters.

A fascinating life story--this article is way too brief to do him any justice, so look at nola.com for some detailed reporting. For example, I was surprised by how prolific the young Mac Rebbenack was: by the age of 17 in the late 1950s, other groups had already recorded 70 of his co-compositions, and his main instrument was guitar until he was shot in the hand defending the lead singer of one of his groups who was being pistol whipped. The Dr. John "night tripper" persona was his post-prison west coast comeback phase of his career.
@Zichi--that is a strong list of gems featuring the likes of the Meters, and amazingly into the 1990s he funked it up even more with songs like "Big Chief."

We CAN all live together and prosper BECAUSE we are different and we are more than the sum of our parts like the gumbo. New Orleans is the soul of the USA and Dr. John is the embodiment of New Orleans. Oh and you can shake a tail feather to that isht too!
Laissez les bon temps rouler!
RIP Mac.
