Still have my copy of Leonard Cohen's Poems 1956-1968, a Christmas present in 1973 from the girlfriend of the time. Suzanne Takes You Down was definitely the most accessible and understandable of them, and later probably his most covered song, but his writing certainly played with your mind; dark and deep. He always seemed to be tormented or in anguish when he wrote. RIP.

The worst news - I am filled with sorrow. He was a poet, a gentle man, and a scholar, and the world has been made better for having his words and music in it.

Should have got the Nobel Prize before Dylan

I hope he is buried in a nice Jewish Cemetery in NYC. there are so many beautiful ones there, and the Jewish population would be honored also. תנוח על משכבך בשלום ah-lahv hashalom

Knew when to go. Knew more than us. I still have my copy of Beauiful Losers from the 70's.

I bought my first Leonard Cohen record about 45 years ago... It's tempting to feel sad at his passing (and I do...), but he had a wonderful Bohemian life, and released a new album just a month ago at age 82. So I prefer to send him off with one of his more rousing songs, "Closing Time": It looks like freedom, but it feels like death / It's something in between I guess / It's closing time. This link is to his official site. Watch the "Closing Time" video right until the end, for a gentle smile in black and white as Leonard fades... http://leonardcohen.com/video/closing-time

My absolute favorite artist, and inspiration (for writing, and redemption). I still keep quotations from interviews on my wall:

"We are not mad, we are human, we want to love, and someone must forgive us for the paths that we take to love for the paths are many and dark, and we are ardent and cruel in our journey."

RIP. Reading the part about The letter to Marianne nearly broke me heart. I'll be listening to that shortly. So long, Prince of Sad.

Mr Cohen was a Buddhist by faith, not Jewish, and lived in California as far as I know, although he was Canadian, so 'Ms Delicious' hopes are unlikely to be attended to.

Maria, Leonard was Jewish... one of his grandfathers was a rabbi. Zen was a philosophy to him, not a religion.

Here is a quote from him about his Zen temple years: “I certainly wasn’t looking for a new religion,” he said. “I was very happy with my own and old religion.” The Book of Longing, a collection of poems published in 2006, included several poems that allude playfully or fiercely to his real and rumored connection with Buddhism and the faith of his fathers.

The Toronto Globe and Mail newspaper has a good article about his life: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/music/canadian-singer-songwriter-leonard-cohen-dies-at-82/article32810848/

I mourn the passing of a great poet and songwriter, to whom I am very grateful for his influence on me in many ways over the years.

Toronto newspaper reports that Leonard died in L.A. on Monday, Nov 7th, and was buried in the family grave in Montreal on Thursday 10th, with traditional Jewish rites... R.I.P. Leonard, we'll all join you and Marianne someday:

You can hear the cantor of his Montreal synagogue chanting in Hebrew, on Leonard's recent song, "You Want It Darker":
