Love Margot Robbie! Hope it's good.

If this turns out to be anything like Ghostbusters 2016, its an absolute disaster in the making. Stop ruining great movie franchises!

No new ideas....

good. then, next version will be with a black actor in the main role, then with an asian one, then we move to LGTB, etc., in no time we will have 20 versions of the same movie

Looking forward to the female-centric version of Three Men and a Baby!!

Oh, hang on.

Pirates of the Caribbean will always belong to Captain Jack Sparrow! Anything else will be but a pale shadow.

How about not changing gender roles and getting new original scenarios ?

I cannot remember what comedian said this but he got a lot of flak for it.

He said female centric remakes will always fail because guys go to see action movies with male lead roles to fantasize they are the guy. Women go to see male lead role to fanantize about the lead male actors/character. Guys go see female lead role remakes of action movies and see the 50kg (125lb) female beating up a 90kg (200lb) buff mane and think she couldn't even lift me how can she beat him up? . Women go to a female lead role remake and think where are the handsome hunk guys?

Meh. I thoroughly enjoyed the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but felt the sequels fell flat and am pretty sure this one will too. These quirky oddball movies only work once because they take the audience off guard and give them something new and exciting, which the first Pirates movie did quite well. Sequels and reboots can never achieve that because the audience already knows what to expect and at best they are just getting thrown more of the same but with a little twist here and there, which isn't enough. Its why Ghostbusters was a great movie that everyone loved, but Ghostbusters 2 and the 2016 remake weren't.

It's a pretty ill thought-out bit of conjecture, so I can understand the flak.

@Antiquesaving

What kind of person wouldn't want to see an action movie based on the fact that it's unrealistic that a woman would beat up a man? As if action movies are based at all in reality lol

Being a massive Margot Robbie fan, I'm really happy that she got the nod. Now until people start moaning about the concept of a female-led pirate flick in this environment, there are a few things to consider here.

First of all, the movie described here is a spin-off and thus does not affect the main series that much.

Second, history tells us that female pirates in the Golden Age of Piracy (1650s-1730s) were some of the first modern gender-breakers as they chose a pirate's life in an effort to take advantage of the many rights, privileges, and freedoms that were exclusive to men at that time. In fact, all pirates chose such life to move away from restrictive conventions of the time. Anne Bonny and Mary Read are perhaps the most famous examples out there, but there were many more than just them.

And third, the recent success from "Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey" shows us that there is a way for a female-led flick to earn success both from critics and at the box-office. As it is the same for any big budget movie, directing and screenwriting will have a crucial role in drawing audiences.

Food for thought.

The new Ghostbusters didn't fail because "Men won't go see women in a movie", it failed because the original couldn't be beat by anyone, male or female.....those guys had magic chemistry.

Ghostbusters 2016 (there’s been a newer Ghostbusters, with the original surviving cast and a new male lead, how much of an impact did that make?) isn’t as good as the first one, but it’s a pretty okay film, and it’s not like the first Ghostbusters was some epic masterpiece. It was an above average comedy. That’s it.

Also Birds of Prey was great and I will burp on anyone who says otherwise.
