Mari Yaguchi offers Japanese beef at low prices in Roppongi

Former Morning Musume leader Mari Yaguchi, 27, attended a press event this week to promote the opening of her restaurant in Roppongi as part of the Onyasai shabu shabu chain.

Yaguchi, who was also leader of Minimoni - a group formed in 2000 by three girls from Morning Musume who were under 150 cm tall at the time, got stuck into the sublime Japanese beef the chain offers at low prices, and some of the 24 varieties of Japanese-produced salads and vegetables.

Yaguchi said she has been a customer of Onyasai for a long time and had gone there about once a week, finally deciding to get in on the action and open her own store - customizing the cutlery, interior design and some items on the menu.

She said she had included a large number of private booths and a reporter asked her if she would go on a date there. Yaguchi replied that she didn't want to become prey for the mass media, but said she was very excited about the restaurant and will have to wait and see.

The Onyasai shabu shabu chain has more than 200 stores nationwide, and to mark the opening of the Roppongi store, all stores will be offering their 490 yen plates of Japanese beef for 100 yen until March 25 (limited to one plate and excluding lunch time.)

she didn't want to become a "prey of the mass media" but she sure knows how to get a press release out when it's in her best interest.

Japanese beef is okay, but there is nothing in the world as good as USDA prime angus!

OK, I'll go there by March 25 for dinner.

I'll take a Japanese A5 grade Kuroge-wagyu or Tankaku-gyu over USDA prime angus for a shabu-shabu, any given day. Remember, Onyasai is a shabu-shabu establishment, not a steak and potato place.

Has she actually grown taller ever since?

Wow! A cheap meat market in Roppongi. What a concept!

Sure you do. And you pay for the raw meat + the cooking + the serving + the ambiance + @ Enjoy the 30 grams here or 100 grams max of Aussie beef at home!

US angus beef is best in the world!

30 grams? Maybe that will fill up someone her size, but most men need 2 or 3 times that much!

One must have eaten a lot of different kinds of beef in a lot of places all over the world to be able to assert this. To me it sounds like 'Momma's stew is the best in the world!'

You will find that 'someone her size' can put away more than 'most men'. And you are offered the option of ordering more than one plate. Actually, most women would like more than one plate as well!

Its probably a good idea that she found a new vocation. She sure as heck cant sing and she dances like a duck on a hotplate.

I'm not going unless it's tabehoudai.

Beef is beef, it doesn't matter where the cow was raised. Once the cuts of beef are made then you can cook it up however you see fit. Look up the culinary text book "On Cooking" and you'll learn all the skills you need to about cooking and preparing ANYTHING and everything.

I really like the Onyasai chain for their tabehodai shabushabu--good (if not top) quality meats, lots of fresh vegetables and sides, and choice of dashi, all for under 4,000 yen (with a 90-minute limit--more than enough time). Their service is great (especially at the Akasaka branch), too.

But I do wish the cloying, annoying, light-as-helium Ms. Yaguchi would disappear permanently from our TV screens, and the limelight in general.
