Men, women represented equally among gay characters on U.S. TV

I think it's great that LGBTs are on TV and other forms of entertainment, but doesn't this mean that LGBT characters are OVER represented and not equally represented since there are far fewer LGBTs in society?

This article states there will be 112 LGBT characters, but does not say what percentage of all characters this is. Nor does it give stats for any given society. Do you know what these numbers are? Please share.

Who cares, why does the LBGT community always need to be noisey about everything ? Is it because they continuously seek the attention?

Yes, the poor oppressed heterosexuals. How did they manage to suffer so long in the shadows, before making it acceptable to show them on mainstream TV admitting to being straight, being allowed to show their kind having physical contact of the most basic kind?

Of course, back then, their kind of fornication was illegal. Quite right too. So many news reports back then, young men and women being verbally attacked, viciously beaten and murdered, and what for? For loving the opposite sex... Such a shame, really. If only they'd prayed harder and not provoked others to attack with their boy-on-girl dating.

But oh my, since hetero-sex was decriminalised, they're making up for it aren't they. They're everywhere, these breeders, parading down the streets hand-in-hand as cool as cucumbers - brazen public displays of affection. They just won't shut up with the boasting and bragging about their legal rights to marriage, their tax cuts, their ability to be accepted as their spouse's next of kin, their supposed 'normalcy'.

I suspect a conspiracy, myself. The straight lobby has pushed their propagandist, brain-washing straight agenda for decades, supported by the closet-hetero bigwigs of Hollywood.

Yes. Gays and straights should behave the same, and be treated equally, no privileges or special treatment either way. It's the only language they understand.

Actually, that's incorrect. There are surveys about the balance of EVERYTHING on TV: The number of female characters to male characters; the number of females playing executives to the number of males playing executives; the number of whites to blacks/hispanics/asians represented on TV; etc. The heterosexual characters on TV get just as many surveys as the LGBT characters do.

I consider "straight" to be one of those exclusionary labels when applied to people because it implies that anyone else is "crooked". This is similar to the "pro-choice" label (as if anyone else was against choices at all) or "pro-life" label (as if anyone else wants everything to DIE! DIE! DIE!!!). It would be so much better if people stopped trying to antagonize each other through name-calling.

There may be 112 on adult shows/ sitcoms, but there are still ZERO on children's t.v. What I mean by that is, there has never ONCE been a character on children's t.v. who had two Dads for parents, or two Moms. Until a man liking a man or dads for parents are represented as a valid existence on children's programming, homophobia will remain rampant as Children are brainwashed by tv from a young age. Sexuality doesn't belong on child's t.v., but PARENTS of all types do!

I'm waiting for the day when they have the 'Gay Channel' where every actor / actress, regardless of age are gay and they can all rejoice in their gayness.

The Chronic, gay TV already exists: Pink TV. I was it in a hotel in NYC when I was there on business about 2 years ago. All gay. I don't know if it was national or not.

It's just as bad as not allowing minority races on children's t.v.

By that logic wouldn't you also consider "gay" to be a negative label as it would imply that everyone else is "unhappy"?

......This is a totally inaccurate comparison in that the majority of minorities (LOL) don't sodomize each other and call it normal behavior.

The "majority" don't? Sadly that's just not accurate I'm afraid, all recent studies show that the majority of straight people have practiced either anal OR oral OR both, which all falls under "sodomy". You're going to have to find a different excuse to justify it as unforgivable.

By the way you went completely off-topic though, since any detail whatsoever of sexual relations (regular or otherwise) doesn't belong in children's programming. We're talking about the gender of parents and couples.

Not two gay men and not two lesbian women. I'm not a Zealot about it but I'm not going to let others dictate to me what I should and shouldn't accept. Maybe that's why it's not on Kid's TV yet. Believe what you want man.

This is clearly not true. Otherwise, there would be no wrong in the world. But there has been a lot of wrong through time - the overwhelming majority of it caused by people raised by a man and a woman who claim to believe in the goodness of god.

Sorry, Charlie, as a logical or even slightly persuasive argument, that's a fail.

I suppose though, if children's TV were interested in truthful, realistic family representation, they'd have to show a lot more alcohol, neglect, and abuse.
