"King of Pop" Michael Jackson's posthumous documentary "This Is It" went on sale in stores in Japan on Wednesday, and according to music statistics firm Oricon, the DVD sold over 210,000 copies and the Blue-ray edition sold over 120,000 copies, together netting first-day sales of more than 1.6 billion yen.

An event was held at VenusFort in Odaiba to mark the official release of both formats of the movie, and a life-size wax figure - 177 cm tall and weighing 32 kg - was unveiled. It will be on display there until Feb 7.

Australian guitarist Orianthi, 25, who was scheduled to be the lead guitarist in Jackson's final tour, also attended the event and played "Black or White."

I've never really understood the fascination by the Japanese with this man. But it sounds like his estate is in for a big payday!

I'll tell you the fascination that the Japanese people have with Michael Jackson, they knew the type of man he was, unlike the Americans who rely on tabloids to furnish them with their news. The American media and the American public started a witchhunt, and it carried on right up until his death. Unlike Americans, the Japanese people trust their instincts, and do not read tabloid trash. I am an American, and I have seen the injustices that were committed against Mr. Jackson, without any evidence, the American public and the media tried, convicted, and sentenced an innocent man. He was innocent when the charges were levied, and he was innocent when he died. Michael loved and respected the Japanese people, as they did him. Thank you Japan for your unwavering love for Michael, he deserves it! May God cover you Michael!

ilcub76 -- maybe the Japanese fascination is the same as millions of folks worldwide. He was a once-in-a-generation type talent who became an icon based on his incredible combination of skills -- singing, dancing, song-writing, showmanship, etc. His performance back in '83 at the Motown 25th anniversary was quite possibly the seminal moment of that decade, even Fred Astaire said he was the best dancer he'd ever seen. But my guess is that you haven't seen "This Is It", so your comment is simply based on ignorance. Am I right?

aaah, if only he'd danced on top of the Berlin Wall, that would have really been something eh. ilcub76 is right, Sony will be raking in the cash, That is it.

Without going too overboard, I admit Michael was a special telent. I don't think we need the bashers or the over-praisers. He was what he was, a talented entertainer who sang ageless hit songs for all generations.

Sure he was wierd. Most entertainers are.

DenDon -- glad we agree. Sony will rake in the cash -- because folks worldwide recognize that he was a supreme talent. As ahocchau says: "ageless". But, again, I know I'm responding to someone who is speaking from ignorence, since you have no first-hand-knowledge of "This Is It".

A good dancer, yes. But his actual music was basic '80s cookie-cutter crap for the masses. He was famous for being famous more than anything. Whats annoying is that his fans fell for his "I love the world" act, while ignoring his pedophilia.

wrong again. my girlfriend dragged me to it at the cinema last year, it was rubbish

Orianthi performed on the wideshow this morning, and Wow! She gets my vote for "best guitarist"! I hope she is on Music Station tonight!

Rubbish? It would have been the greatest show ever.

I've never really understood the fascination by the Japanese with this man.

Well he was treated poorly by his father, had bleached white skin, lived in a childs world and slept in an amusement park. If he was going to be adored by anyone - it was by the Japanese.

Marygboham: Thank you!! It is amazing (or is it disgusting?) how many people continue to perpetuate the horrid lies spewed by the tabloids and media, particularly on this board, especially when the truth can be found with a little bit of research and common sense, for example the court documents and not one single person who has ever worked with Michael has anything negative to say about him as a person. I am not even going to try to refute all the stupid ignorant things people say, but for those who are even half listening, I just want to point out that This Is It is not just the title of Michael’s concert referring to his final curtain call. It is also referring to the strong environmental message he had intended in the concert, which is, our mismanagement of the planet is not only destroying this precious world in every way, but that the destruction is irreversible. If each and every one of us doesn’t act responsibly and start making changes, this is it for the planet. This is it for the future of our children. If you in your ignorance, wish This Is It, is really it without understanding the message, then it is a truly a sad reflection of who you are. I for one do not wish this will be it for our world and the generations to come.

For those who keep saying MJ is weird, if you start working at 11, performing until past three in the morning, never having a normal bed time and no wonder his constant insomnia, becoming a millionaire while still a kid, and mobbed everywhere you go, I do wonder how UN-weird you would be.

I do not go gaga over Michael like a lot of fans do, but I love Michael because I find him inspiring ways (especially in the arts, his humility, and humanitarian work). If I can use MJ's songs such as Earth Song for discussion classes and students come back after a few days and say, wow, I've never thought about this or didn't know that before, but now I want to learn more, then I think the song (& Michael) has done its work. So for the haters out there, if you are unwilling to look at a person with the eyes of your heart, then fine. But let the rest of us who are inspired be inspired and make the world a better place without saying all the negative things just for the sake of saying it or to put someone down.

Peace & blessings.

I saw 'This is it' recently. MJ totally still had 'it.'

He was still awesome - even at 50.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Before he died, they called him a loon.

After he died, they called him a great.

I don`t really know which one he was but the above is one huge gap.

If you are a loon and you die prematurely do you get to then be called a great?

Confusing.

And who gets all the money from the sales??

His family??

Jacksons father is an awful person and his nicey sounding brothers werent so nice in years past. Why do the brothers all talk the same?

Creepy.

Well, the movie went almost directly to DVD, and the DVD started out on sale anyway (20% off here in Shinjuku).

I have no idea, Spitfire and Marygboham, but googling I came accross this written seemingly by an individual, James D. Hudnall a comic book writer. http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/jhudnall/2009/06/26/my-michael-jackson-experience/

Michael Jackson's music and giving spirit will live on through his fans and record sales no matter what some haters think of him. He had a worldwide fanbase and the respect of many of the world's leaders. People that don't like Michael Jackson will hear about him in the news for decades to come, so they might as well get used to it. He was the greatest entertainer of all time and will remain the King of Pop forever.

Gawd, i am so sick and tired of all thei Wacko Jacko hysteria. 1.6 Billion Yen that could have been better spent.

He was a bald, 80s has been with a drug addiction and a creepy obsession with little boys. I honestly cant recall all the wonderfull things the man did, everything he did was to grow his already huge ego.

His death is part of a ghastly and sordid last 2 decades, this sugar coated DVD won`t change that, and yes i have seen it if anyone asks.

This news must really piss off all the MJ haters.

the guy made good music, good in the sense that millions of people liked it. I dont see why its necessary to consider whether he was also morally reprehensible, or not, or if he was a child molester or not. Is there any real reason why someone who is in any way 'evil' could not also be gifted, musically? Is it necessary to invent imitation people, in order to enjoy music?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sorry, yes, at the same time I have to agree with ahocchau, and ensnaturae, whatever the truth of the accusations, his music, taken as a whole (the oeuvre, the dancing, the timeliness, the total presentation) was total genius, and what genius does not have faults? This man was channelling the force. Respect. I will see the movie.

he strong environmental message he had intended in the concert, which is, our mismanagement of the planet is not only destroying this precious world in every way, but that the destruction is irreversible. If each and every one of us doesn’t act responsibly and start making changes, this is it for the planet. This is it for the future of our children

so download this movie and save plastic. he doesn't need the money and you'll be helping his dream live on. think of the children

This is it for the future of our children. If you in your ignorance, wish This Is It, is really it without understanding the message, then it is a truly a sad reflection of who you are.

It would be such a crying shame, if any of the wonderful talent of mankind, was, even in part - disregarded because of mankinds infinite errors. Let beauty, all 'goodness', always redeem whatever faults there are. That doesnt mean that there must be no retribution for faults, only to make sure that darkness, evil, doesnt 'win'! - and that the best may be permitted to shine through, whatever the worst may be. I have heard people say, who I would never imagined in any 'pop' scenario, that the movie is remarkable and very entertaining. I hope you all enjoy it.

There is a fine line between being afan and a weird obsessive as we can see by the huge sales of this silly DVD and some of the posts on here.

The man was a vain egotistical perv, yucky wucky! The DVD was awfull, i wouldn`t recommend unless with a group after some bevvies and you fancy a giggle.

Its as foolish to attempt to obliterate the dark side of his character and make him a saint, because of his music, as it is to obliterate his music because of the dark side of his character. He is likely to be an inspiration for many decades, for many reasons, for millions of people. Hopefully - not for his reputed taste for young boys for sex, etc.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Its always like that with so many people. They just follow the crowd like sheeps! Oh yes, MJ loved small kids, he hated being black, never had intercourse, blablabla. And right after his death, everyone loved him . . .

Why do so many people have to dig and find the dirt in everyone. What is the point in that? I am sure that all those soulless people are all listening to MJ regularly, and loving his songs.

Its simple, his music touched the world and its people, that should be it. No more need for bullshitting around and trying to rip him from everything he owns . . .

People are greedy, selfish and jealous, that's why they have to complain and accuse others all the time . . .

Its sad, if only we did listen to him, the world would have been a better place, could have been . . .

0 ( +0 / -0 )

right after his death, everyone loved him They just follow the crowd like sheeps! People are greedy

I paraphrased you tomgguez, just wanted to make you sound even more like a Sony Exec

0 ( +0 / -0 )

you're missing my point DenDon. But wouldn't mind being a Sony Exec, if thats what you're asking . . .

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I got your point loud and clear. mine is that people who don't give a fig about 'This is it' are no more soulless than the sheep who do

0 ( +0 / -0 )

What jealous idiots. the guy was never found guilty of anything, the kid whos dad accused micheal blew his own head off a few weeks after micheal died guilty conscience. If there was a true star who was a pedo it was Elvis sleeping with 14 yr prescilla look it up. Micheal Jackson Guiness Book Of World Records Most Successful Entertainer Of all Time. Nothing can change that RIP KING
