She is an adult and all but still I found her performance pretty risque and somewhat irresponsible considering her huge following among youngsters. People are free to do whatever they please but when you are looked up to as a role model by youth you have some responsibility to your audience that got you the fame you have. But then again this will be quickly forgoten and the whole thing was probably some type of publicity stunt.

She could kiss her chance to do anything Disney-related goodbye like Anne Hathaway and Vanessa Hudgens after their sex scenes.

@Matthew Simon I understand that she wants to rebel against her Disney "Hannah Montana" character, but the slutty trailer park routine will only do her harm in the long run.

I think it is no exaggeration to say that a majority of big-name child stars and many athletic hopefuls in the US transition into adulthood with serious issues and dysfunctional behavior. So sad really, but not surprising given the way they are pushed much too hard, exploited by narcissistic stage parents and greedy producers/agents. A long list of former child stars have conveyed stories of childhoods marred by chronic abuse behind the scenes, with the poor kids all the while acting out a bright and cheerful persona for the public.

What really infuriates me about this is that the government and people of the US overwhelmingly make a big fuss over child labor practices abroad, but take almost no action against this sort of child labor at home, backed by narcissistic stage parents and greedy producers/agents who steal these precious childhoods for their own fortune vicarious fame. It never fails to astound me that Child Protective Services and labor authorities nearly always turn a blind eye rather than advocate for their well being.

So many people like to trash the AKB's and the public obsession with such young girls, but it all gets put into perspective when you compare to the complete garbage that is being put out in America.

Not really sure what she was trying to do or imply there. Was she on drugs?

I saw it. It was weird/disturbing on so many levels. The bears. The MDNA references. The foam finger sex. And yes, the twerking.

She may be an adult legally and trying to carve out a new space for herself, but this was not good on any level. She came off as irresponsible (even drug-addled???), trashy, talentless and insensitive.

Her parents must be so proud.....

Indeed.. It makes AKB look pretty classy in comparison.

Having watched it, I would say that the world is a better place for it having happened.

Will Smith's family's reaction is priceless.

Will Smith's family's reaction is priceless.

Heheh, except that internet meme was wrong - they were watching Lady Gaga, not Miley!

And they were chewing gum - that's why their mouths were agape.

“I was Hannah Montana’s mother. I do not approve,” Shields said. “Where did I go wrong? I just want to know who’s advising her, and why it’s necessary?”

Translation: Look at meeee!

The bottom line: Entertainment is a product. If you don't like it, don't buy or watch it.

No problem with "risque" or any of that or it being on TV. If you don't like it, turn it off.

It's just that this person looked so bad doing it. It was painful to watch. With her vacant doll eyes and blazing white buckteeth and ugly fat beefsteak tongue lolling out over and over and over again, it was like a Saturday Night Live parody of some birdbrain idiot doing this.

the AKB's

It's just the same thing. This girl is embarrassingly talentless, she has no great future in show biz. As she is totally uneducated, she can't go to live a normal life. Now she is having mental issues.

I can understand wanting to stand out, stick out, make a mark, etc. But Miley Cyrus is simply making an ass of herself because she's pushing it too far for the sake of pushing it too far.

That dirty tongue!!! That was the worst!!

A disgusting display of the current state of American "culture" she would not act out like this without having many other examples to follow of stars being narcisitic, self centered, rude, crude and indecent and the nertworks and directors and people in general laughing and supporting it. She should be put in jail for a good length of time and made to do community service. I have lost any and all respect for not only her but her entire crew and staff who particpated in this horror.

CrisGerSan, you forgot to blame all Americans, living or dead. I'm sure this was just an oversight on your part.

Actually, most of America was disgusted or, at least, unmoved by her performance. This wasn't an illustration of American culture, it was a low-talent celebrity with little esteem for her audience, doing whatever she could think of to get attention. She got her 5 minutes, and most of the population of the U.S. thinks even less of her than it did before.

To bad for Billy! The Bible Belt would have stopped this crap!

She's doing a great job of getting a lot of attention and free publicity, which is the entire point.

You know a long time ago there was this thing called TALENT,seems like it no longer exists in this day and age! Guess as long as you do something that keeps people talking it is good enough, man I miss the good old days when you could watch TV and be entertained by talented people or even listen to the radio and actually hear GOOD MUSIC!!! I must be getting old.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Richard, there's plenty of talent still around. The problem is that it gets elbowed out of the limelight by the merely sensational.

Stranger: Exactly, that's what I was going to mention too...she is now the center of the entertainment world in America. Mission accomplished. I'm not saying I liked it, but I can't see anything bad coming out of this. Higher profile, more buzz, more clout, more attention...people won't be forgetting her name for a long time.

She is only trying to copy Madonna and that other trout GAGA. Next it will be a drug addiction with a few headlining wardrobe malfunctions and she will have achieved her fame. Gawd forbid she should actually achieve her fame talent. Obviously, she doesn't have any, hence the boobs and ass show.

Cyrus has zero talent, particularly when it comes to singing. Her father, if anyone can remember that stupid song he sang! "Achey Breakey Heart" I'm still reeling from that and he was not in the least outraged about what his daughter did. Heck even the man that invented the pointy finger was outraged and you know you really latched on to something when Madonna is outraged. Oh, my God, the heavens are shaking now. She is NO, Lady Gaga and certainly NO Madonna or Rihanna. Yes, she is an adult, but she still needs to understand, there needs to be a little bit of decorum when you do a family show like that.

AKB 48 are soooo much more classy than this. Sad that this passes for youth "culture" in many Western countries these days.

I didn't watch the show... I can not judge her. I have also had my share of bad ideas. I hope she moves on quickly and does not dwell on one stupid performance. The Show Must Go On! -Freddy Mercury
