this is so shocking! but im happy for her, shes one of the few people in the industry who actually has her head screwed on. i hope she is happy with her new married life, i hope she keeps working because shes easily one of my most favourite models.

Why does she have a Japanese last name if her father is American?

Stranger, good question. I imagine because it is more marketable for them to take on a name Japanese viewers are familiar with. Anna Tsuchiya has an American father but a Japanese name. Same goes for Risa Akiyama, Arisa Urahama, Kaera Kimura (British father); Catherine Seto (French father); Mariko Takahashi (American father); Christel Takigawa (French father); Ellie Toyota (British father), Michael Fujioka (American father)....and the list goes on and on. Of course there are "Half" talents out there with foreign names as well, so my theory of marketability isn't 100%. But if you do some research you'll see that the majority of them have Japanese last names. I believe this is because it is easier to succeed in Japan if you have a name folks identify with. And if you have a Japanese surname, combined with a western first name, it presents you as a "half" before you are even seen. Which again, is marketable in this country.

My kids have an English father (me) and a Japanese mother, but they both use her surname. It was never really an issue seeing as we knew when they were born that home was going to be Japan for the forseeable future.

I can't see how using a Japanese surname in Japan marginalises anybody; rather the opposite. They don't get the "pleasure" of being the only katakana name on the class register. And it's not a question of their gaijin half not being as good, just not as relevant.

I'm hoping to naturalise some time in the next year, and when I do, I'll take my wife's surname too. So we'll all be the same :)

You really don't have to japanise your name if you naturalise. You have to write it katakana, of course, because the Roman alphabet isn't part of the language, but you can still be called John Smith if you want.

Seems to me there are two ways of approaching it: Why shouldn't a Japanese person be called John Smith? Or why shouldn't a white guy (that's what I am) be called Tanaka Taro? Either way, you're going to be ruffling a few feathers.
