Model Miranda Kerr is hungry for tonkatsu in her new Japanese commercial, but what’s she selling?

While a certain amount of God-given natural good looks are generally necessary to get your foot in the door of professional modeling, there’s a lot of hard work that goes into making a successful career out of it. Having your whole livelihood tied up in being physically attractive means sticking to beauty, diet, and fitness regimens, and we’re sure Miranda Kerr’s are stricter than most of ours.

Of course, Kerr is only human, and apparently she too feels the pull of a filling, fortifying meal of tonkatsu pork cutlet, as shown in this new Japanese commercial starring the Australian fashion icon. In a twist ending, though, the item Kerr’s pitching isn’t clothing, cosmetics, or even the delicious Japanese food she’s seen chowing down on.

The ad opens with Kerr in front of the cameras, with bursts from the flashbulbs punctuating her switch from one stylish outfit to another.

But while she conducts herself like the pro that she is, the song playing in the background reveals her inner monologue to us. The opening lyrics translate as, “I want to eat tonkatsu! Just can’t get that thought out of my head.”

Once work is done, Kerr can finally do something about satisfying her cravings, and dashes off to a Japanese restaurant for lunch.

Deftly handling her chopsticks, Kerr quickly polishes off her tonkatsu, plus all of her cabbage (she must have read our article about why the two are always served together). At the very end of her meal, though, she pulls something out of her purse.

So what’s her post-meal beverage of choice? Suntory’s Black Oolong Tea, made with ingredients the company says are effective in blocking the body from absorbing fat. We’re not sure how scientifically accurate that claim is, but Kerr still looks quite svelte as she strides out into the late Los Angeles afternoon.

Of course, an extravagant health claim such as this could not be used on US television as it would break broadcasting law.

I have no idea what your talking about considering American television advertises all sorts of different products claiming even more ridiculous crap. A pill that allows you to eat whatever you want but still loose weight, online bidding stores showcasing all these people who bought fancy high dollar products for around 5 bucks, or all the ridiculous beauty products that claim "this or that" but don't work worth a crap.etc. Yes there are alot of products who get lawsuits here because of false advertising but mainly only if health is affected. There are still tons more out there still advertising there nonsense and some that people today probably believe actually work.

@sighclops

Or any developed country with a modern legal system. Can you imagine the lawsuits...

Ah, Japan!

Wow really? You act like Japan is some third world country still living in the boonies. They are "developed" and the legal system is "modern". So I have no idea what your even implying there... Just found that kind of offensive...

Besides Japanese people aren't stupid they're not all going to fall for this advertising bullcrap (though some do but so too do some Americans) And there actually could be truth to this as tea often has excellent health benefits and there are foods that do promote weight loss and heightened metabolism... So there may actually be truth to this claim as well as others. Who knows?

Advertising an advertisement. Ever wonder who benefits from these exercises? Nothing to see here folks

proving the benefits with scientific data

The data shown on those graphs is truly amazing! Blocking the body's fat intake by about 20%!! Enabling the body to develop a long-term resistance to absorbing fat!! And endorsed by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare! They should market this in the US and Suntory will jump to the top of the Fortune 500.

The Suntry's tea is registered as Tokutei Hoken Shokuhin (Food with Specific Health Benefit) at the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, by proving the benefits with scientific data. http://www.suntory.co.jp/softdrink/kuro-oolong/

Haven't you ever heard of Tokuho?

Is advertising news now?

It's good to see a young western woman outshining the local ladies.

Deftly handling her chopsticks

Wow! I've never seen a foreigner do that before. She must really love Japan.

@Serrano

It's expensive, yes. But if you don't eat the tonkatsu in the first place, it works out pretty cheap....

I went to the conbini to get some and it's like twice the price of regular oolong tea! Cripes!

What's she selling?

Herself! She herself is a brand. Stay relevant in Japan and it's an easy few million pounds to film a commercial. Take the paydays as long as they keep offering it to you, like Tommy Lee Jones!

Not a fan of Miranda Kerr but I definitely want me some tonkatsu pronto!

Good on Suntory for using a "foreign" Model and not a J-model. As only a few of them could match Miranda Kerr's beauty. No wonder very few J-models are being represented at the Tokyo Fashion Show.

Advertising is NOT news.

Moderator: It's not advertising and that ends discussion on this point.

Well, I am pleased Japan has not (yet) entered the sphere of the 'modern legal lawsuits'.

I personally dont drink the stuff, not my cup of tea but the claims are supposedly true.

i would rather NOT see advertising being presented as 'news,' a trend that has become all too common on this site. Enough already.

How anyone can be swayed by ads bewilders me. The more famous/beautiful the person, the less convincing. But I will say that I think to even things out, EVERY ad advertising ANYTHING should feature Ueto Aya. We are 25% there as it is.

I also hear cup noodles raise your IQ, and I'm sure family mart reheated pasta meals increase your bank balance. I'm looking forward to seeing who they use in the upcoming ads to showcase these facts.

I guess "DNA sequenced" beauty just doesn't have the same flow...

And if someone is really worried about fat, enough to be duped by a product claiming to block its absorption into the blood, then why eat fatty meat fried in fat?

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

As long as your intake is balanced with your outgo, you don't have to drink the tea if you don't like it.
