Momoiro Clover Z plans concert for men only, drawing complaints from women’s organization

The city of Dazaifu, located in Fukuoka Prefecture, has a couple of nice cultural sites, such as the Tenmangu Shinto shrine and Komyozenji Buddhist temple. It’s pretty short on modern, youth-oriented attractions, though, so many of the city’s younger residents were probably thrilled when they heard that Momoiro Clover Z, one of Japan’s most popular girl idol groups, would be holding a concert in their relatively sleepy town.

Many of them were less thrilled, though, when it was announced that the concert would be held only for male fans, a decision that’s drawn complaints from a local women’s group.

This year the Kyushu National Museum, which is located in Dazaifu, is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its founding, and the concert is being planned as part of the festivities. By chance, the head priest of Tenmangu Shrine and Momoiro Clover Z have a common acquaintance, and the idea to have the group come and perform in Dazaifu was initially put forward by the priest.

In July, a committee was formed including representatives of Tenmangu, the Kyushu National Museum, and the Dazaifu city government. Things progressed smoothly, but in late August it became apparent that the group intended to hold a concert only for male fans. The priest asked the idol unit’s representatives to reconsider, but was told “This is how we want to do it.”

This is a particularly surprising move for Momoiro Clover Z. Yes, the group does consist of a team of five young, good-looking women who dance and sing in brightly colored outfits, which makes it tempting to lump their act in with all of the others in the Japanese idol industry that are designed primarily to appeal to males. However, Momoiro Clover Z actually has a pretty large contingency of female fans too, enough so that the group was given the nod to perform the theme song for Sailor Moon Crystal, an anime marketed almost exclusively to women in Japan.

Though rare, single-sex concerts aren’t unheard of in Japan. Popular male solo vocalist Masaharu Fukuyama gives an annual concert just for his female fans, for example, but he then turns things around with a concert for guys, usually taking place the same week. In the case of Momoiro Clover Z’s Dazaifu concert, though, no corresponding women-only performance is planned. This imbalance is rubbing some locals the wrong way, including members of an area women’s group that have voiced complaints about a commemorative event for a community museum essentially barring half of said community.

It’s currently unknown whether the group will change its admission policy in light of such criticisms, but if it’s going to it’d better act fast, since the concert is scheduled for Oct 31.

It's illegal if done on a public event, on a public facility. They can rent their own hall at 1 million/night, and have their private concert for males only you know, in private...

Women want to be in a concert hall together with men who like under aged girls in skimpy outfits?

I know Japan isn't a sue-happy country, and that's a good thing...but we do have laws for a reason...not sure why things like this are even a thought in organizer's heads unless they're also planning to do a female only concert soon after.

Underwear auction?

At least no black-face.

In the case of Momoiro Clover Z’s Dazaifu concert, though, no corresponding women-only performance is planned.

I say Arashi should do a gals-only show. Then agan, I don't think any men would give a damn.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

It just seems like a more efficient, a more honest way of organizing performances by these kinds of artists in Lolicom Paradise.

If Arashi were to do a women-only show, it wouldn't be news. 'Women-only' stuff is generally accepted here. I realise that men have it way better here overall, but I've always found it strange just how many 'women-only' events and areas exist here.

"men" may be a misnomer, in this case... "post-pubescent males with paedaphiliac fantasies" might be more accurate.

Whats with the comment section talking about lolicons and pedophiles?

Youngest member is 19, oldest member is 22. Average age is 20.4.

I didn't know that finding a 20 year old attractive meant that you were pedophile. I guess this is just further proof of the horseshoe theory of politics. Progressives now sound identical to Puritans.

discrimination at its finest....

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Don't be misled about the whole "discrimination" issue.

The real issue: These All-Girl groups are being sexualized and marketed as "Lolitas", nothing more. All this just ads fuel to the controversy over young idols in a shady industry. An industry in promotes "JK" activity . An industry set up set up for middle aged men to hook up with underage school girls.

Well, those who claimed on the thread the other day that bands like this aren't just sexualized Lolicons can no longer ignore the fact that they are just that.

You are making some pretty strong connections there, when there are none to make. Perverts are perverts. Regardless of what is in the media, they will still be perverts and try to hook up with underage girls. Giving them other candy to look at isn't going to change the issue. You know, sort of like the 40+ women who drool over the Korean boy bands/dramas? Quite a few of those boys are still under the legal age of consent you know...

And FYI, they know they are being sexualized and are willing to do it for the money/fame it brings. Sucks to be a SJW I guess.

It would appear you don't know the meaning of the word lolicon, unless your comment is entirely unrelated to this story in which case, please include that information.

Do women go and watch this type of act?

Women want to be in a concert hall together with men who like under aged girls in skimpy outfits?

Youngest is 19... hardly under age mate. Check your facts ;)

That said, I do think it's a bit creepy that it's an all-male audience... hopefully they'll have a mech standing nearby to stomp on any otaku should things get out of hand.

@darknight. Of course I made strong connections there. Go to Akihabara. The industry (All-Female performers) is being exploited no matter which angle you see it. JK business.

A male only audience? Not surprised. After the show, those men pay a few thousand yen for a quick chat / meet n greet. Harmless but, still enticing enough for them to seek JK at some maid cafe or other establishments on another occasion.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Really, I just think it's a jerk move on Momo's part.

They're one of the least sexualized female idol groups, they do have a much larger female fan base than the AKB groups which do just seem to exploit young girls, and Momoiro really do just seem to be young girls having fun and entertaining people.

Makes zero business sense to exclude your fan base. Sure, you'll still sell out, but you'll also be "selling out".

Jk? I am old man . What means jk?

@wakarimasen Why wouldn't women care about this "type of act"? they also have different tastes.

Momoiro Clover Z has also held successful female only concerts in budokan and osaka-jo hall in the past.

"This imbalance is rubbing some locals the wrong way"

@Dennis Bauer - "Women want to be in a concert hall together with men who like under aged girls in skimpy outfits?"

They obviously like being rubbed up the wrong way... ;-)

As the venue is a national museum, is this a Womenomics initiative?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I'd be very disappointed and confused if I were a little girl who loved Momoclo and couldn't travel to concerts, then I found out that they were coming to my town but just for men. They've done themes for kids' stuff including Dragonball, Sailor Moon, and Pokemon, so in a world where anything made sense, this would be a family concert.

If the decision and pushback weren't coming from the group's management, I'd assume the goal is to bring idol fans into town for the show rather than to put on a show for the local folks, thus the "men only" concert. This would pretty much guarantee that the majority of folks at the concert will travel into town - and if they schedule the end of the concert after the last train, they'll have to stay in town and eat at the local restaurants, too.

If it's really coming from the group's management, I don't understand why they would do this. If the venue is space-limited, maybe they're trying to sell bus tour tickets and concert-limited special goods -- but this is Momoclo. They shouldn't have to penny pinch that way and I can't fathom why they'd absorb the bad press.

So hold a women-only concert as well. Problem solved.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Their fans are easy to spot dressed in Power Rangers solid bright colors--mostly twenty somethings from what I have seen, so about the same age as the singers. Don't think a bunch of suburban dads are their core fans. Not any worse than other extroverted music devotees like Deadheads, Phish fanatics, Parrot Heads, ravers, etc.

Jk? I am old man . What means jk?

JK- in japan, is a term used to describe compensated dating and concealed prostitution of adolescent youth (high school girls).

It's a marketing ploy. They know many men are more likely to become addicted fans.

Seems to be a lot of misinformation in some of the comments here.Momoclo Z have always been different in their approach to the Idol market. That is what gets them a bigger and more diverse fanbase.Male, female, young and old.

And they have had Woman's only concerts in some large venues, see video below.
