Movie on Noriko Sakai gets new lead

Show biz reporter Masaru Nashimoto, 64, was dealt a surprise blow recently when the leading lady for his upcoming film on disgraced actress-singer Noriko Sakai, "Setsuna,” announced the day before the press conference that she would be pulling out of the role.

Based on a book Nashimoto released last month and scheduled to hit cinemas in late January, “Setsuna” was to feature former Takarakuza star Emao, 42, as Sakai, 38, amid the events leading up to her arrest for possession and use of illegal stimulants.

However, Emao suddenly called Nashimoto last week and withdrew from the film. The president of her agency said: “Her manager approved her part too quickly. More consideration should have been given as the film covers some serious social issues.”

Director Masao Kasahara, 55, rushed to find a replacement and actress Shion Machida, 37, agreed to the part on the day of the press conference. Nashimoto said: “Sorry about the confusion.”

I don't consider Noriko disgraced at all. The media acted disgracefully. She's a victim of archaic, hypocritical laws enforced by uneducated chauvinist pigs. She and any other similarly accused should pack up and blow this joint, live in another territory. Follow me, I’m leading.

The president of her agency said: “Her manager approved her part too quickly. More consideration should have been given as the film covers some serious social issues.”

Meaning either the president didn't want Emao to be involved in movies dealing with some serious social issues or Sakai's former management told him he'd have trouble getting cooperation in other ways if Emao went ahead with the movie?

A movie about her life? Wow... speechless. Must be a thrilling movie.

I feel sorry for Nori-P. I wouldn's say she's "disgraced", either. I should think a movie capitalizing on this whole stupid fiasco is more disgraceful than anything else.

The president of her agency said: “Her manager approved her part too quickly. More consideration should have been given as the film covers some serious social issues.”

We can't have that! Her niche is spitting out the predictable crap in dramas that has worked for decades. She prefers stereotypical, vapid, boring, pretty-face housewife roles. Point 2: WHY is there a movie even being made about this Sakai chick?

Wow...thrilling stuff.....im going back to sleep

agree with above. Nori-P is not disgraced at all. It is the media that have acted disgracefully here.

Wow, this is sure to be a front runner for best foreign language film at the next Academy Awards, I can really see a significant overseas market for this film. What star power, an absolute non-entity playing the leading role of a convicted hardcore druggie who just happens to be Japan's national sweetheart.

Does anybody have any additional information about this cinematic masterpiece? Is the film going to be in color, or will they go for a grainy black and white look like Schindler's List, considering the dark nature of the subject matter? Moreover, which non-entity actor will play the counterfoil, the "pro-surfing" substance-abusing husband?

Moreover, how far are the producers willing to push the envelope regarding subject matter? Will they show the main character tying-off and shooting up with her husband? The suspense is killing me!!!

They should get Maria Ozawa to play Sakai, since her Indonesia project got canned.

Talk about a movie about ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!

Hahah, the only possible angle I cud see wud be where you wudnt need a nori-p, if it focused on the inept police, confession forcing prosecution, stoneage laws, media FRENZY, maybe they wud have an angle. But nori-p BORING nothing REALLY happened.

I wud strongly suggest this lame author do this based on a REAL story, ie check out the Sugaya-san thing, this nori-p is a waste of time

timorborder -- great post. Besides what can you expect from a movie that is going to go from script to screen in about nine weeks, including the New Years holiday?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Some of the alleged threesomes with her husband and best-friend/ baby-sitter might spice it up, another reason for Maria Ozawa to get a look-in...

the film covers some serious social issues.”

the more the collective Japanese psyche can pretend that using about half a pipe hit of crack is a "serious social issue" the more they can keep their collective heads buried in the sand and ignore REAL serious social issues that they are too fearful to face, both as a society, and individually.

Is Sakai as top heavy as this girl? If so...I am a fan!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I thought we already learned Nori-p's life story on the news. Do we need a movie?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Shion really isn't good looking enough to play Nori-P.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

That is HILARIOUS!! They already have a movie due out in late January? She just got arrested! How long will the movie be? About 30 minutes??

This whole SAKAI NORIKO thing is a joke. A famous star having a party lifestyle and doing drugs.... big deal, that's what they all do. I can't figure out why they can't just let it go. (Japanese Public & Media) Every big name in Hollywood is around that type of atmosphere every day, no one bats an eye. but here its the end of the world..... too bad she got caught.

Too funny! The movie will show what...her smoking a bit of meth and then going clubbing...ooohhhh! How disgraceful! What an exciting flick this will be! Can't wait!!

so... get noriko to do it. it's not like the offers are rolling in.

Too soon for the film. Except I am certain Sakai wants the cash as soon as possible for telling her story hopefully in a most sordid fashion. Sex drugs and money will earn her more sex drugs and money. Or just sex and money. Or just money.

may be they will turn this into " adult " movie

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If you thought the MJ movie was too soon...this is MUCH too soon, even for this kind of insipid rubbish.

However, this is exactly the kind of vapid sensationalism that makes billions in Japan.

A movie? How stupid is this...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sounds like all those old made for tv movies back home in the US!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This is obviously not going to be up for best foreign film at the Oscars. Sadly, I'm sure it will do well in Japan. Sounds like an absolute crap film.

Alrightie...so a drug which is perfectly legal in the USA/Canada for ADHD sufferers, narcolepsy etc, as it affects a different part of the brain for those people than the non-dopamine deprived, is outright banned in Japan. Quote """nicotine potently enhances the actions of norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain, causing a drug effect typical of those of psychostimulants""".

Nicotine has a similar structure, is known for its calming and concentration effect yes? But if you don't smoke, too bad. This seems to be why smoking continues to be prevalent and need to be so. There are zero alternatives legally available.

Thus this is like making a movie and going to jail over hello kitty children's cough syrup abuse. And has about as much emotional impact, while highlighting just how silly the health care system really is.

I made a comparison to cough syrup which sometimes contains the stronger isomer D- not the weaker L- of the same stimulant. Both used in decongestants, or respiratory illnesses and why they are often banned during Olympics for technically being a stimulant.

If Sakai was an Olympic athlete this would be a story, but still not really a 'scandal' warranting this attention. In daily use though, properly controlled, and with doctor's approval, various medicines can be a benefit.

Strength of a stimulant often determines if it is over the counter, or requiring a doctor's prescription. Nothing I have read indicates to me that Sakai had anything more than a lot of cough syrup abuse. Hang her high! Call her mom!

No doubt this medical angle is completely ignored because the media and entertainment "industry" would have to do something else with even tangible credibility.

Why couldn't she play herself? It would be like a comeback thing...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Michael Jackson tried the comeback! thing -and it killed him. +There are many talentos that have the experience of Nori-P it seems.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I think Noriko should be asked to do the part. She can fill in the cracks more easily as far as what the rest of the story is about. Besides, she is really hot.

I guess you did not see that stache that she was sporting.

Anyone know how much of a cut she is getting from this?

Making a movie about that stupid woman and what happened is a dumb idea. I'm sure it will be a total flop and boring.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sounds like one hell of a movie. Just found the leading actress and the movie is going to open in theaters the end of January (i.e. next month!). What a farce! The whole thing, from the press' fake outrage, to Noripi's fake tears, to the scripted verdict and sentence, to the demonization of the fake surfer dude, to the forced divorce, to this movie that was probably in the works hours after the arrest . . . Whew!
