I hate the word, never liked it, but why is it ok when blacks use it and others can't? Nowadays when you watch every Youtube video of these riots and protests it seems everyone is using the word so why change these books and movies. PC hypocrisy at its worst.

These dirty words are reflections of what people were in the past and it should be taken that way. Also in modern lit, characters who use such ugly language are written in by the author to show the reader what type of ignorant buttheads those characters are. Ugly and racist words should not be used by sensible people in their everyday speech and having these obnoxious characters in novels should show the reader what not to be, it shows how stupid some people are.

In the 5th grade my teacher who was married to a Ukrainian Holocaust survivor wrote many ethnic slurs (incl. white-bashing) on the board, explained what they mean and why we shouldn't refer to others by those words. She was smart.

I remember reading her book when I was very young. It was my sister's copy and she used to read a lot of her books. I still remember it had the N* word and the front cover had a hanging golliwog. I was only a kid, so it didn't ring any alarm bells, but looking back - totally shocking.

If it’s an obscene word, why isn’t there a push to have it excused from hip hop? That’s because when black people use it, it’s not considered obscene.

When white people use it in a clinical discussion, it’s also not obscene, but white people still can’t use it in a clinical way unless they are in court.

But a lot of them do, I see it on videos everyday. So if you make that argument then the “S or F” can be claimed as words created by whites and no one can use them either because of the connotation behind them. Its used in the title and thats about it.

The title of this book was offensive enough at the time not to be published with the English title in America.

The title adds nothing to the story and only refers to a song that most will never have heard. The new title is fine. Or "ten green bottles" would be fine too.

By contrast, the idea of removing Gone with the Wind seems absurd - a step too far. Thankfully it wasn't.

I think dropping it from a required reading list was rather silly, but the book has not been banned or refuted and it is still available in the library for those that want to read it.

People aren’t getting offended because they can’t use the word n-word. People are irritated at rewriting history to protect feelings.

It’s so bad that you can’t even use the n-word when discussing it in a neutral manner.

I did not know Agatha Christie books were history. I thought it was fiction writing.

You should see the reactions in court when a lawyer or witness says n-word to describe what a defendant, plaintiff, or witness said. It’s a completely legitimate use of the word and not intended to offend.
