“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”

Next up; a complete rewrite of Hollywood classic Boyz in the hood.

And every Quinten Tarentino film.

One example of the view at the time was the dialogue between Emily and Vera Claiborne where Vera listened aghast to Emily referring to Africans as “our brothers.” Another was Lombard dismissing abandoning the 20 East African men to die for they were just natives.

Here we go! Let's rewrite everything to make it socially correct even if it was written 1000 years ago.... Wait, Einstein made some racially derogatory statements about Chinese, lets edit all that out!!! And Julius Caesar made some statements about the Jews and so did the Egyptian Pharaoh, we must rewrite all history!!!

How more stupid can this get???

What a farce.

Shakespeare's work could be a next target...

And every Quinten Tarentino film.

Don't forget Spike Lee movies as well.

I hate the word, never liked it, but why is it ok when blacks use it and others can't? Nowadays when you watch every Youtube video of these riots and protests it seems everyone is using the word so why change these books and movies. PC hypocrisy at its worst.

White people created the problem, so they needed to face the consequences of their actions. Is that not the definition of responsibility?

Ok, so then why blacks can use it? Whites created the problem, No one else can say it, but blacks can say a word that the whites created? Why?

Seems very hypocritical to me.

Rampant cancel culture. Pathetic.

These dirty words are reflections of what people were in the past and it should be taken that way. Also in modern lit, characters who use such ugly language are written in by the author to show the reader what type of ignorant buttheads those characters are. Ugly and racist words should not be used by sensible people in their everyday speech and having these obnoxious characters in novels should show the reader what not to be, it shows how stupid some people are.

In the 5th grade my teacher who was married to a Ukrainian Holocaust survivor wrote many ethnic slurs (incl. white-bashing) on the board, explained what they mean and why we shouldn't refer to others by those words. She was smart.

I remember reading her book when I was very young. It was my sister's copy and she used to read a lot of her books. I still remember it had the N* word and the front cover had a hanging golliwog. I was only a kid, so it didn't ring any alarm bells, but looking back - totally shocking.

Then also rewrite every rap song.

Personally, I think I only ever read the plot summary of the book before - great story too - but I’d rather read a version without the N bomb littered throughout.

If it’s an obscene word, why isn’t there a push to have it excused from hip hop? That’s because when black people use it, it’s not considered obscene.

And who made this determination?

When white people use it in a clinical discussion, it’s also not obscene, but white people still can’t use it in a clinical way unless they are in court.

But a lot of them do, I see it on videos everyday. So if you make that argument then the “S or F” can be claimed as words created by whites and no one can use them either because of the connotation behind them. All I’m saying, it’s a weak and flawed argument, if blacks don’t want whites to use a word they despise, then they shouldn’t use such a vile word as well, but they have a double standard and say it’s ok if they use it, but anyone else, sorry. Ludicrous.

Personally, I think I only ever read the plot summary of the book before - great story too - but I’d rather read a version without the N bomb littered throughout.

But I have read it and the “N bomb” ISNT littered throughout.

Its used in the title and thats about it.

If you want “littered throughout” go to absolutely any Tarantino movie. Logically, I assume his films will be next on the cancel list.

I wonder.

Shakespeare's work could be a next target...

Poor old William has long been attacked as a dead, white European male.

I still rate the texts of the monotheisms as the least PC books I’ve read.

Anyone going to try playing around with their more problematic ideas?

The title of this book was offensive enough at the time not to be published with the English title in America.

The title adds nothing to the story and only refers to a song that most will never have heard. The new title is fine. Or "ten green bottles" would be fine too.

By contrast, the idea of removing Gone with the Wind seems absurd - a step too far. Thankfully it wasn't.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I think dropping it from a required reading list was rather silly, but the book has not been banned or refuted and it is still available in the library for those that want to read it.

Pathetique.

Some people mostly of European descent debating the right to call Africans the "n-word," yet they get made for being called racist!

Go figure!

Revising historical works. Next, people will want to revises Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, Cakes and Ale,

I've ticked the "slippery slope" fallacy in today's angry white male bingo.

What what's next?

And yes, then theres Spike Lee - but he probably gets a pass, right

Of course, the old, "blacks say it so why can't I?" nonsense. If you don't understand why black people use it, perhaps you should find out.

I expect you want to demand that gay people stop using "queer" and also demand back the original use of "gay" before it was appropriated.

ohara,

But according to the article, “The word "negre" appeared 74 times in the French version of the book”.

That’s my idea of “littered throughout”!

LOL! You should read more!

I do, too much! That's why never ask me about gaming.

The word is spoken over 100 times in Django Unchained, for example.

And yes, then theres Spike Lee - but he probably gets a pass, right Toasted Heretic?

I applaud this long due decision, done by a direct descendant of Christie herself.

The ones here complaining about this action (cancel culture, excessive political correctness, so on) would be the very same ones applauding if bigoted slurs and statements in Japan (against non-Japanese) were to be dropped and censored out.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Yeah!!!! It is good to see all the racists and racist apologists coming out of the wood works!

Why people getting offended 'cos they can't use the N-word.

Poor why people.

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

@P.Smith

People aren’t getting offended because they can’t use the word n-word. People are irritated at rewriting history to protect feelings.

It’s so bad that you can’t even use the n-word when discussing it in a neutral manner.

I did not know Agatha Christie books were history. I thought it was fiction writing.

You should see the reactions in court when a lawyer or witness says n-word to describe what a defendant, plaintiff, or witness said. It’s a completely legitimate use of the word and not intended to offend.

People should not be offended by obscene words regardless of is using it or for what reason?

@Bass

I hate the word, never liked it, but why is it ok when blacks use it and others can't? Nowadays when you watch every Youtube video of these riots and protests it seems everyone is using the word so why change these books and movies. Woke PC hypocrisy at its worst.

After White people used it as derogatory term for people of African descent, the reclamation of the word as a neutral or positive term in black culture (not universally regarded as a worthwhile enterprise), often with a suggestion of "soul" or "style," started first in the U.S. South, later (1968) in the Northern, urban-based Black Power movement.

White people created the problem, so they needed to face the consequences of their actions. Is that not the definition of responsibility?

Context. It's all about context.
