Namie Amuro and troupe dance off against Maori haka for Coke ad

Singer Namie Amuro, 32, will be sporting a little New Zealand pride in an upcoming Coca-Cola Zero commercial, leading 11 female dancers against a troupe of studs from Kiwiland in the traditional Maori haka dance.

The "Wild Game" commercial, to air nationally from Feb 13, took a reported 15 hours of strenuous performances to produce, but in the end, Amuro was praised by the men as being "wild and really tough."

Produced with no artificial flavoring, Coke's "More Zero, More Black" Zero product is sure to catch the eyes of consumers, right along with Amuro's moves.

A group of studs meaning men? I need to see this CM

Very misleading title. Amuro and co don't do the haka, they just dance. Nothing “wild and really tough” on display here.

Namie Amuro will dance to the tune of sponsors, that is what her job is (singing and dancing) !!

Gloobey - thanks for the link.

What, no nose rubbing?

The article said 15 hours of strenuous performances to produce... So say she got Y50 million for this... Not bad 50/15 = Y3.3M/hour. Not bad at all.

Just watched it. She should be in a short skirt with those legs of hers.

Glorifying war through dance and other art forms is a sign of the violent nature of man; to be attracted by such displays proves we haven't evolved.

Whenever someone asks why JT doesn't have more original content, I shall point them to this "article" (if that word is appropriate) and ask that they be thankful that we get so little. What dreck.

But Namie is still looking good.

women do not haka. It is for men only.

Actually if the Iwi see this there will be some pissed off folks as witnessed by the Maori protests at simmilar stunts in the US and UK. Coca Cola better have had good consultations with the concerned kaumatuas or it might be getting some angry responses.

cliffworks, it's a war dance. It's primal, tribal. At the base of it that's who we are. Does this Maori dance glorify war? I imagine not.

If however you are concerned about those promoting the night stick, look to the Grammys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4RL8lyN6Hc

Interesting to compare. Both are dark - but hot! Perhaps this Coke ad is the Japan twist to the social engineering.

And after that, how can they call it healthy? Argentina banned Coke-0 outright over health concerns.

Moderator: Stay on topic please.

Namie sure has some nice moves. But even that is not going to move me to switch to Coke Zero from Pepsi Nex which contains lemon juice and doesn't have a strange taste like Coke Zero.

Many people in New Zealand will be furious about this. Will be interesting to find if they have permission or not

unfortunately no-one was hurt with spears. WILD HEALTH! to every man and woman

Man, I miss the Zinzan led haka with the 90s squad, I do not like these new faces.

Many people in New Zealand will be furious about this. Will be interesting to find if they have permission or not

You think 'dance offs' with hakas in beverage promotions is something to be upset about? Then see this:

Many people in New Zealand will be furious about this.

New Zealanders are furious about everything. Kiwis and Canadians find a reason to moan about 15 things daily.

Using a Maori War Dance to prommote anything (but war) is barbaric. The Moriori's are groaning in their graves. In 1835, 900 Maori warriors armed with guns, clubs and axes, sailed to the Chatham Islands, butchered and ate the peaceful Moriori population who had renounced war, killing the entire race like sheep. A Maori conqueror explained, ‘We took possession, in accordance with our customs and we caught and killed all the people. Not one escaped. But what of that?’ Jared Diamond in Guns, Germs and Steel.

Personally I do not think using the haka to promote New Zealand (as this will definetely do in Japan)is too bad but Coca Cola? I am just saying that many Maori traditionalists will not like it if they do not have permission.

Cliffworks: Your a bit behind the times, the oppression of the Moriori is a myth that was made up by pakeha 50 years ago to take the attention away from the real oppression of Maori that was going on, so that the Pakeha could say "The Maori took the land off the Moriori, so why is it wrong for us to take the land off the Maori". Guns, germs and steel is a great book, but "A History of New Zealand" is a much more recent book with more accurate facts for a New Zealand perspective.

A History of New Zealand, by Michael King

Cliffworks: wrong wrong and wrong. Historical fiction shouldn't be quoted as fact. There are still plenty of Moriori descendants on the Chatams. Better read "A History of New Zealand", by Michael King. certainly a well researched account of history.

Jeez... you guys are all over the place.

The Haka is NOT ONLY a war dance. It's done as a welcome, for entertainment, etc... and it is NOT only done by men. MOSTLY be men, not not "only" by men.

You might have a point if they were doing a Cibi... but they are not.

a reported 15 hours of strenuous performances to produce...

About what it took to make most of us!

From what I know, the All Blacks have been doing quite a few promotionals for Coke-Zero in New Zealand.

Praised for being "wild and really tough." What a ridiculous statement. Yes, that's what I want to be known for; not!

Zero Coke's are as bad as Zero Pepsi's. Come on, you can still taste that awful sacrin sugar-like after taste.

Guns Germs & Steel is classified as science /history, not historical /fiction, was winner of Rhone-Poulenc Science Book Prize, no easy accomplishment. I will write to Jared Diamond and ask him.

I just wrote to Dr. Diamond, let's see if he will give us his thoughts. For the sake of discussion see URL to this article, it clearly states http://www.japantoday.com/category/entertainment/view/namie-amuro-does-a-maori-war-dance-for-coke

What dreck

'Wild dreck'?

namie is still hot

Funny thing is, she was kept away from them during the making of it...Don't think they even got to say hi to her.

I'll be very interested to see how well or how badly the TV commercial portrays the ABs and the Maori haka. I am hoping that it will be a cool commercial, especially that Amuro chan is in it!!!!

Produced with no artificial flavoring, Coke’s “More Zero, More Black” Zero product is sure to catch the eyes of consumers, right along with Amuro’s moves.

Unfortunately, "Zero", is made with Acesulfame, potassium and aspartame- All countries that make this drink use it, and it is definitely artificial!
