Namie Amuro to take on Gundam in music video

Singer Namie Amuro’s new album “PAST FUTURE” went on sale Wednesday and the music video for one of the songs – Defend Love – sees her suit up in pink gear to battle with Amuro Ray, hero of the first Gundam animation series Mobile Suit Gundam, which aired in 1979-80.

Amuro, 32, said that she has loved the Gundam series since elementary school when she learned she had the same name as Amuro Ray. The series celebrated its 30th anniversary this year and producers Sunrise Incorporated erected an 18-meter-high figure in Odaiba in summer, with over 4 million people stopping by to check it out.

Amuro and Sunrise agreed to collaborate at around the same time, and she is the first living person to make an appearance in the series. Production took two months, and the theme of the song and video is world peace.

Most of the audience that watched the original Gundam on TV would be in their 40s and 50s by now. It's doubtful that they are interest in Namie Amuro or any other 'Komuro family' member that debuted in the 90s.

In contrast, the generation do watch her music videos would no be much aware of the original Gundam, albeit Otakus who have a wide knowledge of anime behind their times. The Gundam media they would best know about would be Seed and 00 that incorporate male protagonists who are emasculated and broody if not outright depressed.

I think she borrowed that hat from the empress. Now we need to to be trained on how to wave to a crowd and tilt your head at the same time. Show legs. She has wonderful legs!

as long as she does it wearing tiny amounts of clothing, how bad can it be ?

Okay, how did Gundam and K-On get mentioned in the same context?

One is an animated reproduction of "War and Peace" and Heinlin's "Starship Troopser" while the other is a pretentious adapation of a shoujo manga about a group of private highschool girls wasting their time.

Amuro, Amuro, Amuro.... Get rid of that hat.

It's a clip-on accessory that's all the rage these days. I think Mio from K-On made it popular: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igEKaCJhtk0
