We called that cable TV!

Yeah I’ve never paid for Netflix. Always used somebody else’s account. And the only reason for paying Netflix is no advertisements. Why would I pay if I have to sit through commercials? And Netflix just dropped South Park so that’s a bummer. So I either have to pay for Disney + or Paramount + or Amazon Prime, which have no good series to watch anyway, just so I can watch a stupid cartoon show.

Gaijinland - tut-tut on the using other people’s accounts, but I can help you with your South Park problem. South Park Studios (www.southparkstudios.com) has all the episodes, no ads, no vpn required, is free, and is 100% official/not pirated. Matt and Trey insisted on it being available as part of their deal with Comedy Central.

its super sad that due to this inflation/poor economy people cant even afford $15 a month for Netflix.

That is the actual issue, not making a cheaper ad supported Netflix.

@ Nosui. Thanks for the info. But to be fair, I can afford a Netflix subscription if I wanted. I’ve just piggybacked off my sister’s account because she never had problem with it.

It isn't that the problem, it is that Netflix has lost a lot of programs and now people need more than just a Netflix subscription to get the shows Netflix used to have.

So now you need Netflix for ABC shows , But you also need Disney to see LMN shows you used to get on Netflix, then add on Paramount and Amazon for QRS and XYZ shows also no longer on Netflix and you 8 now paying 2, 3, 4 monthly subscriptions.

This isn't because of inflation it is because every studio or online service now has their own streaming service.

We look like we are returning to the days of paying for basic cable TV then adding on "packages".

So X basic fee gets these channels, add on Netflix and sports package for Z more, add Amazon or Disney for an extra Y fee get European Football/soccer for an extra M fee.

By the time you build the package with all the shows you want it is no longer $15 it is close to $100 a month

I'm too cheap to pay for Netflix.

If cable companies like Jcom want to stay relevant, maybe they should make deals with all the major subscription providers and sell them as a whole package deal for a reasonable price. Maybe throw in a internet deal while they are at it.

My guess is someone will do it eventually, whether it be NTT or a new start up, just a food for thought.

Yeah seems so based on the info you gave us here. Really need that escape from everything else going on in the world though.

One problem with that!

NHK.

Any package will include NHK and its BS channels and right there ¥ 2,000 a month.

Avoiding cable and going with internet subscriptions like Amazon and not owning a TV you avoid that NHK junk.

We have no TV, I have no subscription but my wife and daughter have Amazon

So when the NHK vultures come around I give them certain suggestions what they can do.

So by making cable TV bundles the Japanese government will force NHK into that costing at least ¥5,000 a month for nothing much.

netflix?

nothing for me so I will pass.

not worth even now without ads, with ads will be more crappy...

At least Netflix doesn’t go door to door harassing people like NHK does. I don’t have a tv but they still want me to pay them because I have the capability of installing a tv in the future? Yeah, paying a monthly fee for what you want to watch when you want to watch it is a much better deal than what the crooks at NHK offer.

I also don't have a TV they told me I have to pay because I have a smartphone and it has a TV, I showed them my non Japanese phone no TV, then saidy laptop can get NHK, then even tried saying the car GPS system has a TV.

I called the police last time, the police told them they would be arrested if they came on my property again.

So now they just leave notes in the mail box.

Antiquesaving: We look like we are returning to the days of paying for basic cable TV then adding on "packages".

I'm hoping for a new super-provider that actually agglomerates all the other providers shows. You pick the show from any provider and the agglomerate super-provider pays the provider per agreement. Customer only pays the super-provider. Since many would be using, the model could force the providers (Netflix, paramount, disney, Amazon, hulu, etc) to keep their prices low.

The super-provider would give 2 choices: free with ads, or $9 per month no ads.

Triage used a variant of this model for hotel prices between various providers (priceline, Expedia, etc), and Huffpo once used for the news (all the major newspapers).

Even complaining when you are not paying.

And don't worry soon subscription sharing will also not be possible.

IMO, they just need to crack down on pw sharing. Hard to make people pay once they get used to free.

They feel that they have to do their best against Disney and Amazon Prime's impressive advertising campaigns.
