Who needs or has got too much time for this crap and even is willing to pay for it? Unbelievable, that this strange business , additionally more than full of similar rivals, really can work and be profitable.

Who needs or has got too much time for this crap and even is willing to pay for it?

Hundreds of millions of people, and it isn't particuarly expensive. Amazon prime costs about the same as a monthly glass of beer in Japan.

Is the enormous popularity of the modern cathode ray tube something new to you?

I like Netflix. It’s a good way to convince myself I’m studying foreign languages.

Lupin is decent and so is lots of other stuff from all over the world. I usually set the languages to Japanese, Spanish or French depending on what language is available and which I want to “study” that day.

This isn't sustainable. Netflix is a tech company built on the same VC model as Amazon and any other tech start up.

It uses VC to buy the rights to as much as it can, exclusivising content and burying the opposition. It can also monopolise control over its content.

It may not be stoppable, so buy the boxed sets of any TV you like, and DVDs of movies before they vanish from the shelves. We may one day look back on the era of physical media - Videos, vinyl, CDs, DVDs - as a Golden Age when nobody could cancel our culture and take it from us.

Once the streaming companies own all the rights, physical media will vanish.

For all the money that is being spent, we are sleepwalking into a cultural Dark Age, where a small number of companies not only own the rights to our cultural heritage, but can delete it at will. They don't need an army of Winston Smiths to do it. They can forget our cultural heritage for us wholesale.

It's as much a movie production company with an online distribution channel.

But yes, I agree that you should buy up DVDs. Anything made by Disney will disappear from regular channels from now on anyone it pushes it's subscription channel. Given that it owns Star Wars and lots of other content, like the Muppets Christmas Carol, the only way you'll get to see them is by subscribing, or buying the DVD for next to nothing.
